To what extent can different forms of arts influence our ideas of freedom and equality?

  1. To my mind, art influence society. For example, some painters makes paints which express their ideas about freedom and equality. This paintings have an underlying signification in countries in war because the artists represent the will of the population to become emancipated. But this vision can change from a country to the other one.

  2. I agree with Ambre but I think that artists can do some incredible things ! For example, there are a lot of different kind of art like cinema, music, paint, etc. The first one can bring us a visual point of view of freedom and equality with a lot of interesting speachs. In my mind, it's more simple than the others because cinema shows us something concrete whereas music can makes us understand some beautiful lyrics and it can makes us travel in our mind, but there isn't the same feeling of reality than cinema. Moreover, paint or photography can create a violent whirlpool of emotions but it's so quiet !
Even if some kind of arts aren't the most suitable, they could do a lot of things for freedom, equality and, why not, peace in the whole world ?
To conclude, I'm conviced that art is the best way to fight for our rights and for love between all the people, but only if it's very worked.

  3. Indeed, it exists several forms of art. We usually say that there is seven : architecture/sculpture ; drawing ; painting ; music ; dance ; literature/poetry ; cinema/photography.

All forms of the arts can express the will of freedom, as freedom of expression, of information or speech, as freedom of movement and worship, …
It can also defend others values, as equality. There are equality between men and women ; between people with different religions or different origins.

Last week, a movie was released 12 years a slave. Solomon Northup's story is a true story ; that of a black and free young man, a native of the North of the United States, was kidnapped then sold as a slave in the South of the country in the middle of the 19th century. The movie attacks the slave system and its ill treatment in the United States ; movies on this matter are rather rare.
The director of this film preferred to do not cut the scenes of violence and had not bias : sometimes he shows us the point of view of the slave drivers, sometimes he shows us the point of view of the slaves. Thus we have a better understanding of the mentalities of this period.
In an interview he said he understands that certain scenes are difficult to look. But if he had not been so explicit in the horrors that Northup Solomon lived, that would make no sense to claim to tell his story.

Many directors preferred to get down to the question of the civil rights rather than the question of the slavery by considering that the end of the slavery was not the end of the problem of the blacks. But thanks to movies of the last year, as Django or the revenge of a slave by Quentin Tarantino, or Lincoln by Steven Spielberg, Hollywood is interested in the subject and opens the way of the historic movies more realists.

To conclude, this movie represents the will to tell us what happened in the 19th century (the action takes place in the 1840s) about the inequality between white and black people. Moreover, it shows that the United States becomes to face at his story and assume it.
But today, there are still situations where many people undergo injustices and/or are not free.

    1. "[...] it shows that the United States BECOMES to face [...]" → it shows that the United States BEGINS to face

      I'm sorry for this mistake.

    2. it exists in several forms of art.
there are seven (uses commas, not semicolons in list)
the will for freedom: as freedom of expression, information, speech, movement or worship.
It can also defend other people's values. (or do you mean) It can also define other people's values as equal. (?) Men and women, people of different religions or origins are all equal.
Last week the movie "12 Years a Slave" was released. (if you can, always italicize films and books and capitalize the first letter of every word except for articles and prepositions).

...a true story: that of a... United States. He was kidnapped and sold as a slave... (you could say in the south of the country in the middle of the 19th century, or you could just say in the ante-bellum South).

The movie attacks slavery and the mistreatment of slaves in the United States. Movies like this are rather rare.

...director of this film didn't choose to cut the scenes of violence and had not bias. He would show us the point of view of the slave drivers, and sometimes he shows us the point of view of the slaves. Thus we have a better understanding of all the mentalities of this period.

...some scenes are difficult to watch. ...But if he had not been so explicit about the horrors that Northup Solomon lived, the director would not have been able to tell us the true story.

Many directors preferred to work on the subject of civil rights instead of slavery. They debate that the abolition of slavery was not the end of discrimination against African Americans.

...thanks to last year's movies such as "Django Unchained"... directed by Quentin Tarantino or "Lincoln" directed by Steven Spielberg, Hollywood is now interested in the subject. This interest opens the door to more realistic historical movies.

...in the 19th century. It tells us about the inequality between... to face its history and take responsibility for it.

      A very interesting discussion!
