Johnny Hallyday

As you know, Johnny Hallyday died last Wednesday. He was really a famous French singer. Would you say that he is/was a hero who promoted French musical culture:
He represented France several times, for example:
He led the French Football Team at the World Cup in 2002 by singing "Tous ensemble" but he also sang touching songs for  French people when the terrorist attacks happened. He can also be seen as a legend for the longevity of his musical career.
I know that some myths are attached to him, for instance: that he had an American father, nobody knows if it's true, but he always said that.
So I think that we can associate him to the notion of Myths and Heroes.
And you, do you agree with the idea that Johnny Hallyday is a hero? Explain why and if you know other myths linked to him, share them with us. And talk about him.

  1. First of all, it's very sad that Johnny Hallyday passed away even though I'm not a very big fan.
I think Johnny Hallyday is a hero but also he is not totally.
Of course he sang a lot of songs for France and for the terrorist attack and also these songs gave courage to some of these fans.
What does not make him quite a hero is the fact that he takes refuge in Switzerland for not paying taxes and that he is much in debt.
Apart from that he was a great singer and he will always remain in our hearts.

  2. Hello everyone,
First of all, I am so sad to heard once more that Johnny is dead. I did not listen his songs, but I know that he was a strong symbol of French rock'n roll. Besides, I know that his true name is Jean-Philippe Smet and he had adopted two little girls from Vietnam. He also wrote good and touching songs. Moreover, in politics he supported people of right movement. Even if he was loved by a lot of French people we could not considered him as a hero. As I'm concered, he was only singing as a lot before him. Although, he was a good singer his entire life was turn to a media event. In my mind, a hero or a mythical person is someone who really change something in the society or in the world. However I understand the pain of his family and his fans and his death is a sad event.

  3. Hello!

I was really sad to hear this news about Johnny's daeth, I think he was an awesome singer. But I think that the medias talked too much about him since he died and repeated things again and again as if there was nothing else happening in the world. I really appriciated him and his music. My favourite song he wrote which to my mind is underated is "L'Envie".
If we want to compare him as a hero we can probably say that he was a symbol of french music culture from the 80's to today. In fact I think that he is one of the only singers that we can be proud of in France since 2000; because now we are surrounded by reality show "stars" and autotuned singers (for example: Shy'm and JUL).

  4. Hi

Just like everyone in France, I was sad when I heard about his death. Of course, I know some of his songs, but I never actually listened to his album, I guess it is because he is not very popular in my generation. Although I am not a fan, I think he was very brave! Indeed, he fought against two cancer, and even if he was sick, he still did concerts, and tv shows!
To put it all in a nutshell, I do not consider him as a hero, but I totally understand, and I respect people who do look up to him !!

  5. Hello everyone ,

First of all, I think that Johnny Hallyday was one of the best singers in the world . Indeed, there was not a lot of people that did not appreciate him. He was known in a lot of countries, had a lot of good relationships with other stars and represented a lot for his fans.

However, I don't think that he did some incredible things to help the others or to improve our everyday life. Of course he gave hope and was a kind of role modell for a lot of persons, but in my opinion, he was just an extremely talented singer and an international star who was loved for his songs and not because of his good actions, because he had not done a lot of good things specially for the others.

Actually, I don't know any myth which is attached to him, although I think that after his death, a lot of myths will be invented about him.

  6. To begin, I learned that Johnny was died. When I first heard it, I didn't believe it and the second time, by showing me a newspaper article, I was upset ...
Many people did not know all the music of Johnny Hallyday however everyone has at least listened to one in his life that is: "Allumer le feu" or "Oh Marie, si tu savais" ...
I quote only two because if I have to quote all the music of Johnny, I would have for a good time.
So, for me, is Johnny or rather a hero?
First, a hero is a person who has accomplished extraordinary things and stands out for his courage in the face of danger. Johnny played his first live song at the age of 17 and until his death, he went on stage exactly 3,253 times and sold nearly 110 million albums worldwide. In addition to that, he has received nearly 10 awards for the victory of music: equivalent to 10 grammy awards.
Moreover, before becoming the exeptional singer we all know, he wanted to become an actor.
To conclude, Johnny wasn't a hero but a living legend of rock and roll attitude.

  7. Hi everybody !
I did not really listen to Johnny Hallyday but i know he was a great french singer who marked his generation from his imprint by his songs rock 'n' roll.
I do not consider him a hero but like a legend or a symbol of France. Why ? Because he does not really help people ... that is by creating foundation or an association. He just supported and participate in these associations such as "Resto du Coeur". He did not change the society in which we live.
We can especially consider it as a symbol because for example he accompanied the French football team in World Cup 2002 with "Tous ensemble". He also sing for families who have been victims of recent terrorist attacks in France
Johnny Hallyday will remain a legend in France and for someone he was and will remain a hero!

  8. Hi everyone!
From my point of view, Johnny was a singer who practically inspired a whole country even though he had ups and downs in his life as an artist.
He left his mark in the world of French rock some even considered as the Elvis Presley French.
We can say that Johnny is / was a hero because since his death, all media, as well as foreign media have spoken and some still talk about it.
Furthermore, many rallies have been made by these fans, such as in front of his house in Marnes-la-Coquette, some people have made several hundred kilometers to say goodbye to their idol !
To conclude, I think that Johnny died too young and that it is really regrettable.

  9. Hi everyone,
I am very sad that Johnny Hallyday died last week.
He was a huge figure of rock'n roll and blues music in France.
To my mind, he is a part of the French emblematic singers as he made an impact on the performing art. Indeed, he was known as a surexcited beast on stage. He gave ones of the most impressive concerts, which attracted a lot of people all the time.
Besides, what was quite remarkable with Johnny is that he had real and fidel fans, who were able to do (almost) everything to look like him for instance. Effectively, Johnny had his own particular way to dress himself. His rock'n' roll attitude and his love for Harley Davidson inspired many people.
That is why, we can say that Johnny is a hero. He formed the pattern of thousand French people and he definitevely symbolises the star of French rock.

  10. Hi guys, how are you ?

On the one hand, I'd like to say that his death created a very emotions waves in whole France and I can understand that because he was a great french singer but he can not be considered as a hero.
He can not be considered as a hero because he made nothing for others. It's true that he sang a very good songs who helped the family during the attack terrorist, but, to my mind, he is not a hero.
For me, a hero is someone who makes the things better, who invest himself for others. I think he made something but not to the point of being a hero.
On the other hand, I don't know many things about him except the fact that he engaged himself several times and he adopted 2 pretty little Vietnam girls. Since his death, his private life has been so broadcast therefore we will learn much more matters about him.
Even if he can not be considered as a hero, I feel touch concerning his death because he was a very great french singer.

  11. Hello everyone,

First, it is sad that France has lost a really great singer. His voice was exceptional and he was really handsome, that's why people loved him when he started to sing and why they loved him after. His songs are also really catchy and the lyrics are very good.

My favorite song is "Que restera-t-il" which is a tribute to his mother who taught him so much. This is a powerful song that I love for the message it delivers.
I don't know any myths about him because I don't really listen to french people gossips. Also he wasn't really my favourite singer so I don't know about his entire life.

I think Johnny Halliday was a great singer but also a great actor. I really liked "Jean-Phillipe" with Fabrice Lucchini because the story is about Jean-Phillipe Smet who did not become Johnny Hallyday in a parallel dimension, and a fan helps him to be the famous singer he is in our world.

  12. Hello everyone,
I was also very sad to hear this news. Johnny Halliday was an icon for french people and he was a real showman. This famous singer was loved by his friends and his fans. Indeed, on saturday there was a big ceremony organized for him in Paris. Thousands of people (anonymous persons or celebrities) came to accompany his coffin to the church and this is just the second time something so big is organized for the death of an artist (the first time, it was for Victor Hugo) !
To conclude, I think we can link Johnny Halliday to the notion « Myths and Heroes » because for some people he was a real hero and maybe also because he fought against cancer until he died.

  13. I agree that Johnny Hallyday is a popular hero !

First of all, he was very young when he started to be covered in the media. He was only 16 years old. Therefore he entered in the collective memory of French people very early .

Moreover, French people have always followed his private life. He has always been in all the magazines, newspapers and television. He was also born in a working class background, had a difficult childwood and this is also why he was so close to all.

During all his life he was like an ordinary hero who managed to remain close to people with his songs but also with his concerts. During his concerts, on stage, he was giving all for his public.

The media knew all about his private life : his weddings, his tax problems, his move to Switzerland or to Los angeles, his confessions about his addictions, his children.

We knew all about his life .

For me the principal myth about him is that all his songs were connected to his private life and mainly to his love stories. Maybe it was true sometimes but it was also putting a gloss on the facts !

Even if he is not from my generation, I have been chocked by his death because I saw him in 2010 at a concert and he was amazing on stage !

First of all, even though I wasn’t a big fan of Johnny Halliday, I’m sad that France has lost a great singer and I’m also sad for his family who must be in deep mourning over his death.
I’ve heard that Johnny Halliday was a generous and kind person who helped finance humanitarian projects. Indeed, in 2012, money collected from his concerts in China and Vietnam was donated to his wife’s foundation “La bonne étoile” to help build schools for children with AIDS who couldn’t go to normal schools. Furthermore, with this money he helped give children access to medical treatments.
All in all, In my opinion Johnny Halliday managed to do great things with his talent and thanks to all his contributions he made the world a better place and that is why I think he can classed as a hero.

However, I don’t agree with the fact of Johnny Hallyday is a hero because he was just a singer nevertheless. I think he was a very good personnality and he marked France and the world of music.
We can identify us at his songs; for example, my brother’s name is Diego and I think me and my family love the song « Diego » for this reason.
Finally, I think Johnny Hallyday isn’t a hero but he was a strong personnality and he marked and he will marks spirits for a long time.

I was very sad to hear about his death since he was really loved by my family and especially by my father and his brother. Both of them used to listen to his songs and dance on it, I really was born in the universe of Johnny Halliday.
Anyway, Johnny was the most popular singer in France, he was known by a lot of his songs like “Allumer le feu” or “L’envie”, he had such a power when he sang and not only he was a good singer, he also used to help people around the world like when he sang in 2006 and the funds were versed to the Unicef charity.

Indeed, I can remember the number of times I listened to his music when I was a child and then, when I heard the news of his death, I was very sad and shocked because his songs symbolize an important part of my life.

  20. Hello,
For me,Johnny's death is very horrible because he was a symbol of French music. He had been until today the idol of too many people, even after his death he managed to gather people, which shows that he was loved by the French people. Some persons compare him to Elvis Presley, which proves that Johnny had left his fingerprints in the rock world and that he was very important for them.
I find it a little misuse to compare him to such a hero; except from singing he did not do a lot of things... A hero is someone who saves people life or does things which solve problems. It's not by singing or writing songs that we can save people; Moreover Johnny had never done heroic actions.
In conclusion, I would say that Hallyday was not a hero but rather a French symbol because his music has always been listened to by people of all ages.

  21. Hi everybody!
Chris Kimsey, producer of the Rolling Stones, explained in a review named "Rock and Folk" of 1996 that Johnny was " the only rock myth made in France ". More than 28 million spectators attended his concerts. He sold 110 million records, recorded more than 1.000 songs, took away dozens of rewards and won 40 golden records. He was nicknamed "the giant". At 16 years old, the young singer Jean-Philippe Smet alias Johnny Hallyday, participated in the radio program "Paris-cocktail" livened up by Pierre Mendelshon. After few roles on the French screens he is noticed by Jacques Wolfsohn, art director for Vogue magazine, which made him famous immediately. In June, 1960, Johnny knew his first big success with the song " Souvenirs, souvenirs". Johnny Hallyday had also a golden heart: He participed at a charity for the end of death penalty in the 70s.In the 80s, he joined several personalities to sing for "chanteurs sans frontières" to defeat the starving in Ethiopia. In October 1987, he gave the benefits from his last concert to cancer research.

  22. Hello everyone!
First of all, I was really touched by Johnny Hallyday’s death. I’ve listened several of his songs because my parents loved him.
However, I’m not convinced he was a hero. Although he fought against cancer and was famous ( maybe the symbol of rock&roll in France ), he left France in order not to pay taxes. That’s why, as for me, he cannot be considered as a hero.
Nevertheless, some myths are attached to him: for instance, Johnny Hallyday’s real name was Jean-Philippe Smet but nobody knew him as M.Smet. As far as I am concerned, I’m sure he created this name because it’s more American.
To conclude, although he was a hero of French music, he wasn’t an exemple for French people.

  24. Hi everybody
First of all, I would like to thank Johnny Hallyday for those huge emotions he shared during his whole career.
I think that everyone has ever heard one of his songs because he was literally a legend of music in France.
But I think it would be wrong to say that he was hero for this simple reason: he was just a singer.
Of course he represented France several times in his life and it’s great but if you want to be a hero, you have to find or create something that will change the future.
For example, Alexandre Fleming discovered penicillin which permitted to create all antibiotics used by everyone today. Those antibiotics saved thousand of people and will continue to save people so of course he is a hero.
A singer is really important in the society because he diverts people and permits them to have fun on his songs but in fact, this is just an entertainment; it wouldn’t change or improve anything.
However, everyone has his own opinion on the subject

  27. Hi everyone !

First of all, I wasn't a huge fan of Johny Halliday, but I was quite shocked when I heard about his death, even if I expected that (as he had cancer).
To continue, everyone knows at least one song of Johny Halliday, and he is a symbol of french rock. I don't really think that he was a hero, in fact he never did something that would have a big impact on the humanity (like speeches or else). Maybe he donated for associations or he participated in caritative causes, but that is a thing that many people do, and even if it is brave and kind, it's not heroic. I believe that he was more a legend of the rock, and that he will stay in our mind. His songs will continue to live for a long time, as he was known by our generation, and as they were great.
To conclude, even if Johny Halliday was a legend of french music he was not a hero, but we will remember him for a long time.

I knew him a little but I wasn’t really keen on what he did all along his life since I didn’t like his songs at all.
However, I think you can consider him as an emblem or a figure of French music but definitely not as a hero even if the comparison can be done, anyway it’s very subjective.
However, for the last 2 weeks, I've been listening to his music in order to have a concrete point of view on the matter. And finally I think it’s not so bad: some songs are very emotional even though I don’t really appreciate them.
To conclude, I think he was a good artist who marked a whole generation and I have compassion for the grief or the family and fans.

  31. Hello,
Johnny Halliday was a very famous singer and French people loved him. He sold a lot of CD and all of French people know the lyrics of one of his songs !

To my mind, "heros" was not the good word to describe Johnny Halliday. Nevertheless, he was a superb artist and a perfect singer. His songs like "Allumer le feu" or "Tenesis" are very very famous. He permit to people who are sad to find happiness when they listen Jonnhy's songs and fans thanked him.
In ad, he was a symbol. He was the symbol of French bikers, rockers and represent it all over the world, particularly in USA. Sadly, he was not very famous out of France except in particular places in the world and I think that people had to know him because he' s a good person.
To finish, I think that he was a good person because some people said that he didn't have a lot of money when he died because he spent a lot of money (for bad things like drug may be yes....) but to help people too ! So I wan't to say: thanks Johnny and Rest In Peace !
