DISCUSSION

Do you think learning a language requires a teacher? Explain your answer.

  1. Yes I think. With a teacher we can talk together and ask for questions if we have difficulties. A teacher sees when there are some misunderstandings and can help the pupil.
We make more progress with a teacher and the relationship whith him is always very benefit.

  2. Hello, i'm michel, and I agree with you, we can get better easily with a teacher! A teacher can help us to improve our pronouncation, or to correct us when we make mistakes... A teacher is not compulsory, but needed, beacause we can learn a language without (in the case, it's more difficult ) or with a teacher (in this case, our english is higher, we are able to learn more and more vocabulary...)
To learn a language, we need to have an example, and the teacher is the one we need. And if the teacher is from an english-speaking country, it can only be beter!

  3. I'm agree with them, if you don't have a teacher for learning you a language, it will be very difficult. On the contrary when you have a teacher for learning you; vocabulary, grammar and phonetic it's more easy. So, you can learn a language without a teacher but i think it isn't as benefit as a teacher.

  4. Yes, I think that because we can't speak a good language alone. We make too many mistakes. We need a teacher to correct us so we could progress. We could read alone and learn vocabulary alone but we need to speak to somebody else, to improve us pronounciation.

  9. how lucky we are to go to school without paying anything , hum …. For the moment .
For me , learning a language at school is a real luck ,but is it well teached ?
Obviously we need someone else to improve ourselves . Several myths ,like « The cave’s myth » thought by Platon , explain us we can’t be in the true side whether we stay on our own . The consciousness requires to that extent an other person .
A teacher is formed for raising there pupil to the knowdelge and afterward to make them become aware of realities .
For language teacher it’s more specific : they are evidently here to learn us a new language with vocabularies, verbs, pronounciations, grammars …
But here, my query is to challenge the class system . Even if we are lucky, i don’t think that english is well taught ! I think the language teacher blends vocabulary, verb, prononciation , etc, in a hour . He ought to target half minutes or one hour for pronounciation , and the same for each aspects of a language . But , the minister makes a program , and its unfortunately impossible to do such utopian reforms .
So, it’s in order to create the atmosphere of the country , a teacher uses a tape where there are interviews, dialogues … I don’t thing that its work .
As far as i am concerned , my ability in english has never been so improved as when i started talking to english people . Actually, my language was more « real » after 10 minutes with english people , than after a hour in class .

  11. Hi everyone,
I know that this subject has been on the blog since a long time but I find it quite interesting, so that's why I am commenting right now.
First of all, I strongly think that teachers contribute a lot to our knowledge acquisition. They often try to make things easier in order to enable students to understand and learn new things. For instance, I guess that it is harder to take correspondence lessons than to have a real teacher.
However, I believe that it is a little bit different for languages. Indeed, nowadays, we have many different ways to learn a new language by ourselves such as radio, series, newspapers, TV shows and so on... But one should not forget that teachers may give you better advise than anyone else as they are professional. To my mind, a language teacher completes and enriches your language level.
To sum up, I think that learning a new language requires most of the time a teacher.

  12. Hi! I know that this subject has been on the blog since a long time but I find it quite interesting, so that's my answer.

My opinion is quite tempered because on the one hand I don't think that learning a language necessarily requires a teacher nowadays because of all the technology and the websites or the applications on your phone, for example no one in my family spoke english except my older sister because of school, so I started with nothing not even a basis. But I was very motivated because I've always been passionate by learning new things and communication so I began to watch series in english with subtitles, next to that I also began to note some words in a small book and to listen to music and paying attention to the lyrics and even though I'm far from being fluent because I still do some mistakes, my english has clearly improved and is much more better. Indeed when I went to Toronto for the holidays I could easily understand what other people were saying and replied to them.
Therefore on the other hand I agree that having someone to explain us and correct our mistakes could be only beneficial and it's also a big help to acquire vocabulary and to improve our pronouncation.

In brief I guess that nowadays with some motivation we can accomplish a lot of things with the help of the new technology in particular, but clearly having someone besides us to push us and help will never be a bad thing and can only be useful.

  13. Hello everyone,

In my opinion a teacher can help you learn a language and guide you in such a way so that you learn the language more or less quickly but there are several ways of doing so, specially these days, such as travelling to the country itself to pick up the accent and the exact pronunciation of certain words, in which case we would have to stay a long time in the country to be able to speak the language perfectly, but then I do believe that some people have facilities learning languages whereas others find it more difficult.
There are also more simple ways to learn a language such as listening to music, for example personally I tend to listen to Spanish music, and I have noticed that I pick up some of the words and nowadays I find it much easier to understand the language.

To conclude I don't think that learning a language necessarily requires a teacher even if it is a very good way of learning, indeed these days learning anything has become much easier then just 10 years ago, technology and traveling are the key to many new things such as the learning of a language.

    Thank you for reading.

  14. The question is to determine if learning a language requires a teacher. On the one hand, I think that people could learn whatever they want by themselves. In our days, we have many things at our disposition like books and Internet with many websites to learn whatever we want. A person who is really ambitious and motivated is able to learn a language without a teacher. On the other hand, it is more difficult for this person to learn by himself because he will have difficulties to correct him and to progress quickly. Teachers are here to do that and anybody could do this better then them. So to conclude, it is possible learning a language without a teacher but it is harder and we all need a teacher to understand what mistakes we have do and to learn more easily.

  16. Hi,
I think you always need a teacher to teach you even though you study a language by yourself.
Let us admit that a language requires training, exercising, and practice for you to master it.
No matter what your learning method is - autodidactic or not – you need resources to train, exercise and practice. Thus, resources are imperative to master a language.
The resources you use have been made by people who are allegedly able to teach you, whether you found them on the internet or not.
Since “teachers” are always required for you to learn, we can reasonably state that an actual teacher who is acknowledged is far better than a random for you to learn a language or anything else.

  18. Learning a language with a teacher offers structured guidance, immediate feedback, motivation, accountability, and cultural insights that can significantly enhance the learning process. Teachers provide a structured curriculum, adapt lessons to individual progress, and correct mistakes in real-time, preventing the reinforcement of errors. They also offer cultural context, sharing authentic materials that enrich understanding. On the other hand, independent language learning offers flexibility, access to a variety of resources, cost-effectiveness, and personalized learning. Self-study allows learners to set their own pace, focus on personal interests, and choose methods that suit their learning style, often at a lower cost. Ultimately, while the benefits of having a teacher are substantial, combining both approaches may offer the most effective path, leveraging the structured support of a teacher with the flexibility and personalized nature of self-study.
