Can myths make a hero?

18 comments:

  1. A hero is a person who stands out for his bravery and merits. It can also be the main character of a literary, dramatic or cinematic. A hero is a person who arrived an adventure, who played the lead role in a certain situation. A myth is a set of beliefs, idealized representations around a character, a phenomenon of a historical event, technique and give them a force, a special significance. But is it a myth can make a hero? Pout be a hero must have must have proven, through specific acts that can be considered a hero. Take for example the Cornelian heroes in literature, as in the cid, where Don Rodrigue through its legendary acts became a hero. With this example we show that through a myth (the legendary acts) a hero can be born. But there are mythical characters that are not heroes. Indeed Camus wrote the myth of Sisyphus, in which it is a myth, but which is nevertheless not a hero. So we have shown through this argument a character becomes a mythical hero through acts, however, a hero is not always mythical. So we can conclude by saying that a myth can be a hero, but not always, as in the myth of Sisyphus.

    1. Wow, I totally agree with what you said and found it very interesting.
It would be nice to see you comment here more often : )
One little thing, maybe: try to make differents paragraphs, it would be easier to read. But that's all.
      Anyone disagrees?

  2. A myth is an intemporal or an universal account caracterised by ist shape, which has its roots in sacred . It is based on a character who has respectful or disrespectful values . A hero is somebody who has exceptional qualities: fearlessness, stenght and the desire of making fairness reign . He really cares about the society by helping it and he sometimes puts the others before him,he sacrifices himself for the safety of everybody. However, can a myth be connected to a hero ?
On one hand,we can say that myths cannot be connected to a hero as the greek myth of Medusa who has living venomous snakes instead of hair . The ones who have met her eyes, were suddenly turned to stone whereas a hero save people and not the opposite . Moreover,in the Art world,Salvador Dali is kind of a myth but hasn't any heroe caracteristics . Nevertheless,a myth can be linked to a hero as the character of "Che Guevarra" highlights it . Indeed,he is a Cuban myth, everybody has heard of him and even use his name as an onomatopeia and he's seen as an icon,a hero
In other words,a myth can be connected to a hero but it depends of the myth but not all the timE

    1. Hum, cool-cool.
But Medusa was slain by Perseus, who was a hero, right?

And even if I am not sure if good ol' Avida Dollars is the kind of myth implied in the subject, I'm really glad to see someone mentionning him: the guy was so awesome ("je suis FOU! du chocolat Lanvin" ... amazing)!

  3. A myth is a legendary story featuring imaginary characters in a allegorical manner. If the character is wicked, individualistic and have no values, it's an anti-hero. But if the character is brave, helpless and strong, it's a hero.
For example, Ulysse is one of the most famous heroes of Greek mythology. King of Ithaca, son of Laertes and Anticleia, he is married to Penelope that he has a son, Telemachus. It is renowned for its metis, this " cunning intelligence " that makes her popular advice in the Trojan War in which he participates. It is still the metis that stands out in the long journey that he knows the Trojan back, sung by Homer in his Odyssey. And, when Ulysse dies, it marks the end of the age of heroes and thus the stories of classical mythology. The hero and his myth, is timeless and known to all.
So in this case, myth make a hero.
However, the myths can make anti- hero as Dolon in Greek mythology. Dolon is like Thersites for the Greeks, a Trojan anti- hero. It is the only Homer describes as ugly. This physical ugliness is the image of a moral ugliness because it is a boastful and he claims divine horses of Achilles, the best of the Achaeans, while itself is an unknown warrior.
In a story, if there is no villain , he is no hero that saves people from the wrong person.
In that event, myths can make heros but also anti-heros.

  5. Hello everyone,
First i will define the word Myth and Hero
A Myth is a traditional or legendary story, usually concerning some being or hero or event, with or without a determinable basis of fact or a natural explanation, especially one that is concerned with deities or demigods and explains some practice, rite, or phenomenon of nature, and a hero is a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.Often the hero is the lead role
For me a myth can't exist without a hero.
In myth there is God and demigod but god and demigod aren't they already hero for believer ?
Myth can make a hero I think yes because in this type of stories the lead role became a hero for the other role and the readers
    that's it !
    Forgive me for the mistakes

  6. In my opinion, a myth is a representation of an ideal person, it's like a legend that everyone knows. For me, a hero is an imaginary or real person that has done good deeds like a soldier who saves somebody's life or who helps somebody to do something. A hero is a person who inspires confidence and bravery. It's a model for people. A hero, it is a person showing bravery, of generosity and any other possible qualities. He saves lives, in spite of his own life. One myths could be characterized by legend, it is thus in a way fictitious.Legendary narrative staging imaginary characters (gods, demigods, heroes, natural elements) in a allegorical way.The question can be seen in a different way: are all the leaders heros in the myths ?A myths contains of course leaders who make brave actions(shares) or not ,coward or not.. Sometimes the principal carachter is not brave or honnest, he does what he wants for his own interest. So to answer the question, not all the myths generally makes heroes but part of them yes.But don't forget that the real hero is the one who helps the others and the one who likes making it! Everywhere around you there are heroes, they are not in myths but real:fireman, doctor,soldier...

  7. Myths and hero are linked. A hero is a real or fictional personage whose actions and caracteristiques defined him as a superior and good person who defend the values and the innocent population. A hero has also always the envy of overcoming all the difficulties he meets.
A myth is a mix between a legend and a story. And most of the time belongs to an old civilization. A myth relate the story of fundamental aspect of the society and has sometimes has a moral purpose.
So can myths make a hero ?

First, myth can relate the story of a hero and so make a hero. With the example of Minotaur's myth killed by Thesee who became thanks to this myth a hero. By relating his exploits and show him as a courageous, strong and very intelligent person who beat the Minotaur, the myth present him as a superior person who correspond perfectly to the description of the hero.
The myth also cross the time and ensure the reputation of a person and so make him become a hero recognized by everybody all over the time like the greek mythologies.
At contrary a myth can describe an anti-hero and so show a person by insisting on his defaults or his bad actions against the value defending by the hero. For example Ajax in the Greek mythologies whose action are totally anti-heroic.

To conclude a myth doesn't systematically make a hero but to my mind the myth tells often the story of a heroic person who make heroic actions.

  8. A myth is not real it's a legend like santa claus, a hero is real, he's an amazing person who does amazing things for others. We see heros everyday whitout even knowing who they are, they are normal people; they give money for charities, they fights for there countries or organize collects! A myth is a legend because he teaches us how to act, react, there is always a story that goes with a myth. I think that eros and myths are good exemples for children because all the children want to be amazing, to be super strong or famous and heros and myths are! For me a myth is someone who didn't really existed but who sends a positiv message to others like santa claus, he does not exist but for the people who believe, it's important to be good to have gifts! Heros are different, they exist and act everyday, they save lifes, help people doing things, protect there countries! Soldiers, firemen, policemen... all of them are heros who fight for the populations! A myth is here to be an exemple only, in all the legends the myth fights: he's the one who is alone against 100 enemies but wins anyway, he's the one who makes mountains move (litteraly), this is not possible. Finally I would say that both of them are good but we should respect heros more than myths because they are real and act everyday!

  10. I think a myth can be a hero, but not necessary.
We define a hero like an extraordinary character who has many qualities (like strength, intelligence…) and who uses it to defend his values and to help the world where he lives. He always overcomes the different trial than he meet. Today a hero can be fictional like superheroes of comics or real like sportsman or actor.
A myth can be a legend or a story famous who fascinate people like the Trojan War. It can be character who is considered as a model or an almost perfect person but it can also be a bad character that hasn’t any good values and who impress by his evil
The both can be models. The both fascinate the world by their skills or their adventures. They are often the bearer of a moral message. Indeed, we can learn a lot with them.
In my opinion, a hero can become a myth, so a myth can make a hero. A hero becomes a myth we become a timeless and universal public figure. A hero becomes a myth when he becomes a model for different people of different societies of different times.
To conclude, it’s especially their life in the memories whose difference the myth and the hero. So a myth can make an hero but not necessary

  12. Myths are often stories told by a particular people such as Greeks, Romans, and others. Myths explain the stories, the adventures (whether triumphs or tragedies) about certain characters, which are most of the time represented as heroes or just as legends that everyone know. A hero is someone that is considered by everyone as superior, male or female, he has qualities and even powers that normal people don't have and they are known to use their powers in favor of the community, to help people that are in need.
Can myth make a hero ?
First, I'd say that myth can make the apology of someone, for exemple the myth of Prometheus, who's a hero known all around the world because he fought against gods to save humans. And in this case yes, his myth makes him a hero because it tells us his story through his adventures and that's what makes him a hero, because he's seen as a strong and brave man.
But the legend of Cronus shows us that a myth don't always make a hero because heroes are not the kind of person that eat all of their kids to keep their power just as Cronus did. In his case, there's nothing good in his story, nothing to compare him as a hero.
To conclude, we can say that a myth can make a hero, but it can also create the exact opposite of what is expected.

  14. A myth is defined by a timeless and universal, as a legend . It can be for any public or rather for children, like the myth of Easter . The hero is a character, real (like Martin Luther King ) or not (as Batman, or others comics characters) defending ideas ans projects, help others , and sacrifies himself, therefore detening values such as strength, justice , courage or even generosity. More, it often marked the tradition, history , daily life , popular culture.
However, the myth evokes the human condition , its history transmitted first orally and often played by a hero. The universality of myth allows to highlight how each culture is interpreting humans and invent stories to model them.
More than all, the heroe had to be an example, a role model for humans: We can see that we project on the known personalities, this image of the hero. Although we make dreams almost half of our lives we live in the real world. This is why men projects the power of fictional characters on a real person, for these acts. The men hopes, therefore, also be able to heroic deeds.
In conclusion, society create myths and heroes to dream the best of the world, imagine perfection. And thereafter, it throws these fictional heroes in real life to have models and progress in the right direction. I think the heroes are a good way to set goals in life, to have an example to follow when we are lost. The desire of the unreal, dreams can also be a good point but be aware the difference between reality and fiction.

  15. Do you mean heroes and myths are essential to progress? Do we need them to make our real world a better one?
