Video Games

What is your relationship with video games ?

Do you play video games (or rather, did you, before having too much work to do anything else) ? If so, as a casual gamer or as a hardcore gamer ? And if not, why ?

What would be your evaluation of this media ? (what controversies have you heard of, and what are your opinions about them ? Do you think it can be considered as an art form ?)

  1. Okay, here is a subject that I see fit for an "academic" writing exercise, and the questions in the subject are here as a suggestion for a 2-part framework, but of course you can decide to explore other aspects : favourite games, economical question, educational purposes ...

  2. Video games have become a virtual reality, the player takes control of a character and decides his actions, orders them in real time through a controler thus this character becomes the players avatar in that world. This allows players to explore what it would be like to be someone in those worlds and situations, also it being fictional and death not mattering as much, it can allow exploring different behaviours to your real one.
I will add that video games have become as big if not bigger than films, the effort put in to them, be it music, visuals or story have given us some of the most cult stories ever.

Actuly is media and arts. Because a gamers grow up and video game is change this them. For exemple "Pokemon" become more serionus in the tematic. The soun trackes is fabulous, sotory are exiting and images is beautifuly. But is it also à commercial product. And passion can lose.

    1. "Fabulous" might be too much to describe the soundtrack from Pokemon.
Don't get me wrong I am not saying it is bad, but c'mon, it is above-average only if seen relatively to other video games music, and even then it would not be top 5, hardly top 10.
I have to admit that nostalgy adds quite some value to it, thought.

  4. To start with, one must make the difference between various video games. You can play alone in front of your TV set with video games you have bought, you can play with your smart phone, you can play online with gamers you have never seen, (and will never see) or you can invite friends and play with them. Therefore, one's relation to video games is different according to the game and the will to be with others or to be alone. So, is a video game a way to encounter people or a means to withdraw into oneself? And if you play on the internet, what of the huge number of ads which invade your screen?

In the first place, I would like to talk about the various ads which pollute our video games; they are meant to make us buy, to make us feel the need to have useless things. I don't like to be manipulated while playing, I don't like to be said what I should like or buy... So I prefer playing with games where no ads appear.

Playing with friends is for me the best way of sharing new occupations and fun, and I don't spend too much time on the screens, but I have read that some kids are addicted to video games, and the number of young nearsighted children is increasing because they are younger and younger spending too much time on the screens. Thus, it becomes a matter of public health. Parents should be more cautious and refrain their children from playing too much... I think that outdoor activities are healthier and are closer to real life.

I would eventually say that video games are a good way of having fun unless you spend too much time on your screen and you forget to live !

    1. "the various ads which pollute our video games"

      *cough* adblock *cough*
no really, installing it was a huge relief and it took me no time.

unless you already did and are not talking about browser/flash games, but then I don't see what kind of games it would be that would have ads, and am asking for precisions.

And if you are talking about flash games, I must also add that, iirc, it depends alot on what site you are on. For example Konregate is relatively ad-free, whereas shady places like 899games its clones are, indeed, filled with ads. And viruses, I suspect.

    2. Well, I was just talking about the games I play on my phone : whenever I lose, there are ads all over the screen... thanks for the tip anyway.
What I dont like is the fact that developers install ads in their games and we have to watch them. The principle remains the same : look at the video in history, you have first to watch a Swiffer ad !

  5. To begin with, I'd like to point out that Video games are all my childhood. I remember my first Gameboy that was a red one, (if there is old players in this blog that was the gameboy before the color one ). I mean for me that is good memories the music of Tetris , or the logo nintendo...
Moreover there was my gamecube (I sold it...)This was my first console fixed, ooooooh too many memories...
Over the years I played less and less...
And now I am a casual player, I only play with some of my friends when I have the times.
I often heard a lot of thinks about video games, for example that's too violent, this encourages violence in school or in the street. On the one hand we can be agree with this but in the other hand I think if we are not totally stupid we can take thinks into consideration !
I also heard that is mind-numbing (sorry for the expression ) I DISAGREE !
We need to play with moderation ! And there is games who learn a lot of thinks (like Adibou )

To conclude I like video games and I appreciate the work of the developers...

  6. People can have many ways to see video games and their goals may be different. Nowadays, they are very developed and this is one of the largest business in the word. Although, since their existence, video games facinate and most people developped a particular relationship with them. So what is my relationship with video games ? First I'm going to write about my habits in the past and present. Afterwards I'm going to explain my opinion about hardcore gamer.

First of all, my relation with video game change throuth years. When I was younger I loved playing virtual games. However, it was just a pastime because I practiced many activities like sports, drawing and music. It was fun to share video games with my friend and talk about it, if it is reasonable. Nethertheless, some games are addictive and I could past lots of time on it. Fortunately, I'm the kind of person who can hugely play in a small period of time, but tire quickly and move on.
Now, I'm not interested in video games at all. I can play if I'm with friends and if it's an interactif game. I know that I can be focus on a video game and like it very much but I don't have time anymore to do that so I prefer to spend my free time in an other way.
Furthermore, I think that if a person is seen as a hardcore gamer is that he is unlucky and he didn't have the chance to open his mind to other distraction. To my mind, it's not a good thing to be focus on only one activity. Moreover, it's not something that brings you many positive waves.

To conclude, my relation with video game is very distant. I think that is a pleasant pastime and can be interesting in certain ways. But, like all good things, we should not abuse it. Video games represent a realy big progress in programs. It also have a big power over people who are addicted.

  7. I played a lot of video games, a little less now. I think it's good but it does not abuse if it is bad for health. This is to entertain and pass the time. Some people abuse it and become addicted.
