suicide

Due to the damage of the epidemic, more and more students are in depression and committing suicide.
A week ago two BTS students, 19-year-old Leila and 21-year-old Kevin, committed suicide for fear of failure and stress.
What do you think?

  1. I think it’s serious and sad to come to this.
But also very complicated, whether in relation to the courses and their academic success, or even concerning the student budget and their lifestyle.
Many students count on their jobs to meet their basic needs (rent, shopping etc.) and the epidemic is putting them in unimaginable situations.
I think it is a very difficult period especially for those who are in higher education and that it is essential to do everything to help them and that the government has already taken a step by granting them meals at 1 € but that more is needed.

  2. Hello.
It pains me to read this news. Leila and Kevin are not the only ones to make this act, especially now, in a time of crisis. I can't put myself in the shoes of these students, adults who have to endure and fight their suffering before putting an end to it forever... It's such a painful choice and a worrying subject these days. Suicide puts an end to the difficult phase the individual is going through and avoids a deeper crisis. In this sense, the suicide attempt expresses the end of a crisis that the individual has put into action.
    Thank you.

  3. Hello,
It's true that it's a very difficult time for everyone, especially for students, which is really sad, but I think it's in this kind of situation that you have to be brave and not give up because once it's over, life will surely be easier and our efforts will pay off !

  4. I'm not shocked to read that. Effectively, since last year it has become very hard for a lot of students to keep up with the school rhythm, and particulary for students going to university, owing to the fact that they are obliged to work constantly at home.
Obviously, it is also complicated for pre-preparatory, BTS or DUT students like Leila and Kevin, when they feel oppressed by the school pressure while their living conditions are very difficult due to health restrictions. I don't only talk about money or social life problems. Their living conditions can also be difficult because of lack of family support for instance.
In addition to that, more and more families are in difficulty since the beginning of the epidemic, because it has increased the rate of mental illness for adults (parents, students) and adolescents.
So, I think there are not enough resources available to help people in difficulty, that is people who don't have enough money to live, who suffer from mental/physical health or adolescent with serious family problems.
Besides, in the scientific council for Covid 19, there is only a child psychiatrist since February! In 2020, there were no doctor for mental health problems, as if the government was denying the impact of the epidemic (and particulary lockdowns) on people's mental health! That's schoking.

  5. Hello !
In my opinion, students feel more and more isolated. Before the pandemic this problem existed yet but now this situation has increased due to numerous lockdown. They are isolated and their financial situation deteriorated rapidly.Few politicians are working on it even if this situation is critical.

  6. I think it's really alarming that some people come to this, and I understand the pressure they were under and the feeling of helplessness they must have felt, though I never thought of making such a horrible deed. However, I think this must not be a reason to cancel all the sanitary measures of our situation. No matter how sad this kind of event is, these people made their choice to end their lives. But the restrictions due to the Covid-19 protect the lives of loads of people, who surely want to live their lives normally.

  7. Students sometimes feel a lot of pressure especially when they get older: they fear failure and fear not being up to the task. However, the situation that students are facing nowadays is even more concerning due to Covid 19. In fact, when you add to that pressure the fact that they are often isolated in small apartments, overwhelmed by online classes, deprived of their odd jobs to gain money and of course the fact that they must reduce their social interaction, it can eventually lead to depression. That’s why, I think that the government should have done something about this issue way earlier. Fortunately, measures like the reopening of restaurants will definitely rejoice some of them.

  8. In my opinion, the situation of students since the beginning of the pandemic has only worsened. Indeed, it has been more than a year since the lessons have been held at a distance, which is very demotivating for them. It is therefore urgent that the government reacts so that the situation of the students improves.

  9. I think the exams are very stressful for the student because it is a finality.
Going outside to see friends or family allows you to breathe during these periods of revisions.
Unfortunately due to sanitary restrictions, the students withdraw into themselves.

  10. It is very sad and scary, many students are in a state of stress and fear of failure. It has become very difficult for many students to attend classes, especially for college students, as they are forced to constantly work at home without going out. The covid 19 epidemic has created more and more stress and many families are in trouble since the epidemic started because it has increased the rate of mental illness in adults, teenagers but especially children. the government should try to help students more. it is a very difficult time that we should try to stay positive about.

  11. I really think it is a shame that they could only resort to suicide in the end. These times are hard and especially with students, who have been put into a tough situation. With financial and social struggles due to the pandemic, it is hard for them to concentrate on studying and they often end up feeling overwhelmed. This feeling of powerlessness can cause you to fall into depression which then translates to laziness and into an increasing workload. Depression is a vicious cycle and it can be hard to get out of it. It is sad to think that some can only consider suicide as a solution when there are many other things that you could do to get help and to get out of it. Even more so when it's young people who are committing these suicides, when they still had a long life ahead of them.

  12. Hello everyone
I am a high school student, and it touches me particularly that it is other young people full of ambitions who decide to end their lives because the pandemic is only temporary and not definitive...
So yes I understand the stress on their part but from there to want to end it becomes serious, because these acts have repercussions on their families, their friends ...
This pandemic and this quarantine was not easy to live, but I think we must keep hope

  13. Hello,
I think this sad news and the increase of depression among students are the consequences of the mismanagement of covid-19 by the government, especially for BTS students because their exams are maintained so the government should set up a continuous control to reduce stress in students.

  14. I find it really sad that for some students the only way to avoid pressure or fear is to commit suicide, I find it really serious because it proves how students of all ages are under enormous pressure which leads to many depressions, suicides, school failures. Unfortunately, because of the current situation, it has become even more difficult for young people to get by at all levels and not give up and not shut themselves in.

  15. In my opinion, this shows a neglect of the French government towards the students and their situations and that the reforms put in place are insufficient to support them, although it is their future that is at stake.

  16. Hello,
For more than a year now, we have seen that students were left aside by the government. Indeed, following the crisis, some are isolated, sometimes far from their family and in some cases, they can have less social contacts. Students have to work from home and stay most of the time in front of their computer to stay serious for their study. Thus, this lack of social contact/family support and this confinement can seriously impact the students' minds. Moreover, some of them used to have jobs to pay for their housing and food, but the pandemic has confronted many students with precariousness. Thus, all these factors plus the doubts, fear of failure and stress have pushed some students to commit suicide like Leila and Kevin. I find this very alarming because we are talking about the future generation and I think that the government has been a little too late to take interest in the precariousness of students. I hope that the end of the health crisis will allow students to go back to school even if they still have to work to help them.

  17. Hello,
To me this situation is sad but it is not new even before the pandemic students didn't receive enough support. Now that we are in a pandemic the situation of course only became worse.
Students are struggling and need more than just financial support but psychological help to find a way to cope and deal with stress and fear of failure. They shouldn't have to take such final decision and should be able to be helped to find another way out.

  18. Students have been taking their classes from home for over a year now. However, some of them live in tiny flats where life is not easy and being locked up all day makes it even more difficult. This pandemic has led to the isolation of thousands of students and the confinement causes demotivation and loss of social ties which are factors that can lead some students to depression and unfortunately sometimes suicide. I think the government should have put in place a support system for students to avoid them being left alone. I think that the situation will nevertheless improve with the gradual reopening of bars/restaurants and cultural places that will be able to offer distraction to students.

  19. I am sorry to hear this terrible event happened. Even if I am still studying in high school, I would've liked to share these young people's distress. It is a fact that many students have a lack of moral during these tough times but I was far from imagining such a tragic event could happen. It has become urgent to find ways to avoid such incidents in the future and it is universities's and high school's responsability to bring support to the students in order to make them feel like their efforts aren't put in nothing and to give them a constant willing to succeed. All my condolences go to these young people's relatives.

  20. This news is very sad and worrying. Unfortunately it’s a reality, because many students aren’t in good conditions to take exams, they have financial difficulties due to the crisis and they had to work from home for a long time. Moreover it can be very difficult to be a student in this period because they can’t go out to take a break and due to the lockdown, they no longer have social interactions so it requires a lot of organisation and motivation to work.

  21. Good evening, I think that after more than a year of Covid restrictions we could have come up with better solutions. Even if we believe the vaccine can save us all, we should know better than to think that this virus is the only one we’re gonna face in the next few years.
For a virus that touches the elders mostly, or people in health deficit we could have decided to isolate a certain part of the population in the countryside or at home. The only reason young people are forced to stay home and take precautions is because we do not want to spread it to our elders. In this case I suggest we separate. We cannot condemn a whole generation from working in class, having a social life and playing sports to release their stress for elders who are bound to die soon. I'm not saying we should give up on our elders, I just think they are not a priority. They are not our tomorrow and we must prepare ourselves in the best way so that we can hold the challenges of tomorrow and support the society.
I think we have prioritised the elders for enough time for the government to realise that the measures they took not only barely helped, but also took away younger’s generation’s opportunities ad hopes as well as their lives. We have seen that suicide rates have gone up in the last year, it is surely no coincidence that living behind closed doors is a big factor or it.Working from home, without a teacher nor lessons is difficult, not being allowed to relieve your stress makes it even harder.

  22. I am not even shocked to read this. It has unfortunately become a daily occurrence to read this in the newspapers with the current situation and I deplore it greatly. It's horrible and I find that little is being done about it. The students have been put in the background since the beginning of the epidemic. They are sacrificing the students when they are the future engineers, doctors, florists, cooks of tomorrow. At this age, one can quickly become mentally unstable, especially at this time, and I feel that it is like shouting in the ears of a deaf person.

  23. Hello, first I think it is so terrible and sad that words can't even express it. I think the french education system should really change and get better and evolve for all of the french students' sake. I have to admit though it's not the first this year I hear that kind of story and to think about the fact that they're are not the only ones in this situation is even more depressive, dramatic and problematic. Of course suicide is not the solution but if those people did what they did I can't even imagine what they've been through to end up where they did.
