"The Fortunes of John de Courcy"

The Fortune of John de Courcy is a fiction story written by Philippa BOSTON, a British journalist, historian and author specialized in the medieval period.

In The Fortune of John de Courcy the scene takes place in the town of Oxford, in Britain, in 1582 under the reign of Queen Elisabeth Ist who was the daughter of King Henri VIII. She was Queen of England and Ireland and in that epoch, times were difficult between the Catholics who supported the Church of Rome and the Protestants who supported the Church of England.

  1. In my opinion, I feel that in the book we really understood that the times were difficult between the catholics who supported the church of Rome and the protestants who supported the church of England. We clearly understood it when John was trying to find the person who had framed him, because he and the others were wondering if it wasn’t someone who supported the other church and didn’t want John as the new scholar if he didn’t had the same mindset as him.

  3. I have read this book and I like it. This story makes it possible to understand tensions between protestants and catholics. Indeed, in the first chapter, John de Courcy said “some would prefer that a Protestant such as myself did not become Scholar to the Duke” (page 7). It’s a testimony about Catholics hating Protestants (or the other way around).

  5. I haven't read this book yet but it looks very interesting! but in my opinion I think that it can well explain the conflict between religions at that time because it is not too studied at school.

  6. I didn't read this book. The events of the book unfold in 1582 in Britain under the reign of Queen Elisabeth Ist. I think this book is going to be very interesting because I like medieval setting. I like books with some aspects of fiction. Also religion is really interesting for me. I am a religious person. I think in the book we are going to see rivalry between Catholics and Protestants. I suppose, the main character will be drawn into this battle. I'm interested to know how this story ended. The title "The Fortunes of John de Courcy" seems to hint that events will unfold around the main character and perhaps everything will end tragically.

  8. I haven't read "The Fortune of John de Courcy" by Philippa Boston, but it looks like an interesting historical fiction story. The setting of Oxford during a time of religious conflict seems quite intense. I think I will add this book to my 2024 reading list
