Would you be able to tell us what is  criticism ?  caricature ? irony ? litotes ?

1) Define  criticism .

2) Which meaning would you give to the word « critical »  ? (try to use

examples)

3) What is a caricature ? What is an author ‘s aim when he/she uses it ?

4) Define irony . Where  can we use it ?

     5) Do you kow any other words from the same family ?

     6) what is litotes ?

     7) Does the  word « critique » exists in English ?

Say what you know about it !

Now make sure you got it right !

Read examples  a, b, c and d , and say which one deals with  irony ,

caricature , litotes or criticism

(one of these is repeated !).

a) For a man who hated war, he would have made a superb war cameraman.

b) This article  points to the  main aspects  of the work, it is an enlightened analysis

which shows  the various literary devices used by the writer to create suspence.

c) The small man with a little moustache ( who reprensents Hitler) dances in his

office trying to play with  a big baloon that looks very much like our planet . (scene

from Charlie Chaplin’s movie« The Great Dictator »)
