Stereotypes

Do you think that stereotypes are unfair ? Or are they just descriptions of  a majority of a population ?

  1. There are lots of jokes about stereotypes out there. Are these Stereotype jokes simply harmless jokes people tell about other cultures, nationalities or groups of people? Or might it be because they got it from somewhere and that stereotypes might exist for a reason. Is there any truth in those jokes or that statement?

Stereotypes might be based on real experiences that people have interacting with each other. Like certain behaviors, especially cultural.

Maybe stereotypes exist because people are afraid of variety, change, and of the different, the unknown. They prefer to hold on to simple and ordinary classifications, old habits, and whatever they feel comfortable with.

Stereotyping exists and people don’t need to be hypocrites and say it’s wrong or it’s ignorance, or discrimination. I think some people use it in a negative and hateful way but stereotypes are there to show that there are differences in all humans and it is a natural concept.

It may not always be true to everyone but it didn’t come out of nowhere.

  2. A “stereotype” is a generalization about a person or group of persons. So stereotypes are characteristics imposed upon groups of people because of their race, nationality and sexual orientation …We develop stereotypes when we are unable or unwilling to obtain all of the information we would need to make fair judgments about people or situations.

The brains reliance on stereotypes as a "default" condition that requires over-riding, may be a survival calculation. It may be a rapid way of assessing whether a situation is threatening or not, whether a person poses a danger to them. The only problem is that this popular perception is mostly wrong. Our society often innocently creates and perpetuates stereotypes, but these stereotypes often lead to unfair discrimination and persecution when the stereotype is unfavorable.

These generalizations have their roots in experiences we have had ourselves, read about in books and magazines, seen in movies or television, or have had related to us by friends and family. When we judge people and groups based on our prejudices and stereotypes and treat them differently, we are engaging in discrimination, therefore we think things about people that might not be true. So we judge a book by its cover. Because they generalize groups of people in manners that lead to discrimination and ignore the diversity within groups, stereotypes should be avoided.

That’s why it’s important to judge specific individuals rather than the groups of which they’re part. Finally, I would like to say that when stereotypes will be eliminated, it will be easier to acknowledge and appreciate individual differences.
