The Music Question #2 : One Direction vs Divine Comedy
I recently found out that famous boysband One Direction actually wasn't half bad. But I wondered, are they on Divine Comedy's level ? Please tell me which group you think is better, and why !
Due to the inconsistancy of the Comedy, everything that involves Neil Hannon, especially his collabs with Yann Tiersen, will be taken into account, except for "song for ten" and "love don't roam" (they were composed by Murray Gold, so it would be unfair and a terrible stomp). I don't know much about 1D, so no restrictions for them.
Even if the post is 1 month old, I really want to give you my opinion. I didn't know anything about Divine Comedy that why I listened couple of songs before giving you my point of view. The Divine Comedy is so much better than 1D, their songs are issued from the heart I think and we can feel influences of Joy Division and Jim Morrison (my opinion). Also the period of activity TDC are from 90' whereas 1D are contemporaries. In my opinion 1D are just a group created for the purpose of business/money abusive popularity, look all of them are awesome and sexy in a way while Neil Hannon is full of charm but not a model. 1D are just some dolls with tampered voice, expensive clothes and fake songs written for them. Anyway i do not hate 1D I just do not understand the popularity they acquired and why. But I' m surprised in a good way to have discover The Divine Comedy definitely more retro more charming than 1D. And if you deal with Yann Tiersen you already start with an advantage ;)
Usually, when an artist has way more success than what you think they deserve, it is because they advertise more, and make more appearances in public medias. With that said, I agree that 1D is very overrated in public opinion, just not as much as others. Do you think the contest would be more fair if we didn't take into account the pieces that involve Yann tiersen ?
I've never heard Divine Comedy 's song before so as I am a curious person I taped on YouTube, to see what was it, and finally I found this kind of music not bad. However I listen the One Direction's music almost since their beginning 5 years ago. In my opinion their songs were destined for teenagers between twelve and fifteen years old, then they became more mature and their songs touch more people now, so I prefer the One Direction's new songs. Eventually to my mind I find One Direction and Divine Comedy as well the one as the other one.
I think One Direction is better than Divine Comedy because it's a different genre : pop ans rock . For exemple "Steal my girl" is my favorite song because the texte is beautiful , often it's the reality of the life when you have a lover . The lover is always afraid of losing his love. Now young people seek more songs with lyrics that make him them think about yheirs lives
