What about next year ?

Hello everyone!

This is the beginning of the second semester and most of us will have to choose what to do next year. It's a very important choice that can determine your future!

What are your plans for next year? What do you think about gap years?

  1. Hello everyone,
My plans for next year is to be motivated to increase my grades, be more serious in what I do and always be surrounded by people who are dear to me.
What i think about gap year is that if you do not study but that you work or that you go to another country to learn the language or to work it is an additional point for your cv if not if its just to rest you I find that it completely stupid.

  2. Hello everyone!

First of all, we will have to make a very important decision soon.
As for me, I am not quite sure yet, even if I have several ideas.
I want to get in a good "prépa" (for instance Massena), but I do not know yet which field I will choose. Right now, I am conflicted... I don't know if I want to do "MPSI" (mathematics) or "BCPST" (biology,physics...).
I wish I could do a gap year. It would be a great way to travel, and maybe to work in order to learn new skills.
But unfortunately, I can't, because the schools are not going to take me if I stop studying for 1 year...

  3. Hi everyone,
I am looking forward to leaving high school because I want to start something new and learn things that interest me more.
Finding our path in life is not really easy and it frightens more than one. Indeed, choosing well our studies is a crucial step because it determines more or less our future. As far as I am concerned, though I slightly know what I want to do, I always wonder if I am not about to do something that I could regret later. I am questionning myself all the time concerning every single formation not to miss one which could interest me.
Furthermore, I think that we are not enough aware of the different cursus which exist.
Regardless, I hope that you will all find your orientation and will be pleased about what you do.

  4. Hi everyone,
Fisrt of all, I think that choosing what you want to do in your life is a very difficult choice. And, at this time of the year, we already need to have an idea.
As for me, I am maybe going to do a « prepa ECS » or an university in Paris. I like history but also maths so I want to continue those subjects.
Then, I have mixed feelings about gap years. On one hand it can be an amazing opportunity : during this year we can visit countries, learn new langages or even do humanitarian actions. But, on the other hand, started again your studies after this year can be complicated . Moreover, in other countries the gap year is like a tradition, which I find great, but in France, we are not used to it.

  5. Hello everyone!
As far as I'm concerned , I want to keep studying languages. In fact I want to do a LEA (langue étrangère apliquée) faculty and I need to go in another city . I'm practically sure of my plan but I'm really terriefied to be independant.
I already think about doing a gap year but its difficult after to return to buisness.

  6. Hi Hana !
Firstly, next year, I’m planning to start medical studies. It is a subject that has always interested me and even though the first year is known to be really tough, I can’t wait to start!
As for gap years, I really think that they are a great idea. Indeed, they allow people who are clueless about their future studies to have extra time to think about what they would like to do. It also gives people a break before starting university meaning that they can start new studies with a fresh mindset. Furthermore, many students take gap years to travel, wanting to discover different cultures and lifestyles. This is exactly what my brother did last year, he went on a humanitarian expedition in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. His work there lasted three months and consisted of building water infrastructures for the village where he was staying. He really loved every moment of his trip and would do it again anytime, and it does make me want to take a gap year and do the same thing too but I prefer starting my studies directly after my Baccalaureate because they are already very long as it it.
All in all, gap years are enriching on so many levels and it is quite sad that they aren’t very popular in France.

  7. Hi everyone !
First of all, I hope that everybody will find what they want to do next year.
As for me, I’m looking forward to do a “prepa ECE” (economie commerce option economie) since I want to be in a business school later in my life.
I chose prepa ECE instead of ECS (economie commerce option scientifique) because of my difficulties in math and I’m very excited to start my studies since I will move to Paris next year.
As for the gap year, I think that it could be an amazing project if you’ve really planned it. You can learn new languages, visit new countries and do such many other things. But in my case, if you want to enter in the “prepa” that I quoted, you’re not allowed to take a gap year…
I hope that I will have my first choice and my math’s difficulties won’t be a problem.

  8. Hello everyone,
Next year, I want to go to a business school. Indeed, I will participate in a contest to be accepted in a big school like EDHEC in Nice. That would be wonderful to go to this school because I want to create my business and she will be able to help me. I will also try to integrate a "prépa" because it is the royal way to integrate after pretigious school.

Now, I am going to speak about gap years. For me, there are not essential but they can help us to enrich our language and our knowledge in an other country. A gap year can make us breathe if we need a pause.

  9. Hey everyone!
What about next year ... I think that this question turns in everybody’s head especially at this moment because the long-awaited registration on APB is coming.
Personally I have always thought that I was going to study science, especially astronomy but I start to doubt because I don’t want to miss some other course choices which could suit me better. That’s why I am thinking to have a break after the BAC. I would really enjoy to do my civic service for a year before starting to study. To my mind it gives you experiences of real life and work because it’s complicated to really know what you are going to enjoy studying. After that I hope that I will truly discover my passion because as a matter of fact, I plan to study languages instead of sciences.

    - The end of our school years will be very important for everybody, like Hana said it's a very important choice that can determine our future! However we don't have to stress.
    - As far as I am concerned, maybe I am going to study in a university in Paris or in an other city in France because we don't have many choices in Nice.
    - Concerning the gap year, I think it is a great idea to improve your english or an other language but unfortunately like Coline said
schools are not going to take me if I stop studying during one year.

  12. Hello, I am in 1ere so I have one and a half year left to decide my plans, which is great because I have no idea of what to do after highschool. I don’t even know in which sector I want to go. I am interested in certain things of course, like psychology or marketing, but no enough to make it a job. However, I am sincerely thinking about the future, because I will have to make a choice soon if I want to be accepted in a college.
To me, gap years are very stressful. Indeed students have to be hard-working and serious, if they want to be accepted in the university of they choice, or success their exams. They must be irreproachable, the years their are the most distracted. Indeed it is very hard for students to be hard-working because they are young and most of them want to have fun or just relax by doing nothing but watching shows or films.
As far as I am concerned, I have big difficulties to work, and I usually do my homework at the very last moment. It is a very bad and stressful habit that become worst each years. However I don’t know how to get to work if I am not forced to by the time.

  13. Hi Hana!
To begin with, I’m quite stressed about next year. In fact, from the beginning of the Terminale, I have searched studies that can interest me. However, I’m not feeling comfortable about leaving Nice but I’m sure that I could. Moreover, my favorite subject is Mathematic but I’m not convinced I could do Maths everyday.
Furthermore, I would like to go to «  Dauphine » in Paris where I could study maths, economy, English and marketing.
On the other hand I think a gap year could be great for people who don’t know what to choose. I’m aware of the consequences of my choice and sometimes that makes me sick. To my mind, it’s hard for us to choose but at this time of the year, we need to pay attention.
Regardless, I hope everybody will be happy next year and won’t regret their choice.

  14. Hello everyone,
to begin this question I ask myself for some years already and then very recently I discuss with members of my family and I think they helped me answering indeed since very young I always wanted to go to medicine because I love to look after people and take care of anyone who needs it it is true that it is not only my motivation but it is the main ones. Then I decided to tell me about first year prep medicine and I think I have found one that I like but of course as any student who wants to study medicine have all fear of the concoure ducoup I began to search the internet international school abroad and I found a university in Spain that seems to me to be very simple and ducoup I keep it as "plan b" in case of a failure in France

  15. hi everyone,
to start with, I made a long way before finding my advanced studies.
on one hand, I'm interested in biology. like to know how a cell works or how are the exchanges between our cells and our environnement,
but on the other hand I'm interested in things like business, marketing..
this is why I've chosen studies that combine both of my interests. to put it all in a nutshell, I'll do a carrer to become a biology engineer in five years, specialized in environnement, cosmetology and agrifood with major marketing. I know it sounds like crazy but it is really simple at bottom !

  16. Hi Hana,
Personally, I would make medecine studies to become physiotherapist. I don’t need to have good marks to make medecine studies because it’s at an University. However, I have to have good marks to be helped by a preparation school, in addition to the University.
It’s why I have to work and do better than at the first semester if I want the help from the preparation school. So I agree with you Hana when you say that this semester is decisive for us.
I am also interested about the Gap year and I’ll care more about it if I fail in medecine. I think it could be interesting to progess to speak a foreign language and to discover new cultures. It’s certainly a great life experience which can bring different types of knowledge.

  17. As far as I'm concerned, my plan has always been to enter Massena high school to study physics and chemistry because it is the best training in this area without leaving the house that I can get. However, judging my personal results, I intend to follow my old dream. Indeed, I want to study musicology and continue playing music all day to be one day a composer for orchestra. This is a dream that has always followed me. Nevertheless, it will be difficult to become famous in the business and have my music played.

  18. Hey Hana,

It is proving to be a quite hard decision this year for our futur. I think about all people who don't know at all what they want to do the following years . That's true , it's an early decision.
But as far as I'm concered I strongly want , already for a long time , to do medical studies. It seems to be a very demanding field but I'm able to do everything to become my dreams reality. One schould never forget our goal.
The subject of the gap year is a good choice because there is different visions which are all intesresting to see.
To my mind we must weigh the pros and cons. A gap year could be a rewarding intention concerning the CV when you decide to search new experiences around the world to work with different cultures. It shows that you are able to adapt you quickly in diversify situations.
However when you just decide to take a break just to have a rest it can be something wrong and annoying because some school didn't take you anymore ..
It also depends on the contry in wich you live . For example it's not the done thing in France, sometimes you can lose your student statuts, althought it's something well seen, in german.
I personnaly don't want to do a gap year just because I'm afraid to forget the rhythm of work.

  19. Hi everyone,

As far as I am concerned, I am very worried beacuse I have absolutely no idea about what I want to do next year, I am totally lost ! I can't wait to leave highschool and discover new things but I don't really know what interests me.

Concerning the gap year in a foreign country, I think it is a great idea. We can discover new places, culture, people, lifestyle and improve our english, and even learn a new language. Morever, it is a good way to become more mature, and independent and mabye find what I really want to do in my life. I am actually very interested in gap years, but nothing is planned yet.
It is true that in France, Gap years are not very common, but in some countries like scandinavian countries, it is very usual to do a gap year and it lasts sometimes more than one year.

To conclude, I don't know what I want to do next year, but I think that gap years are very enriching and I am seriously going to think of it.

    Happy New Year everyone !

  20. Hi everyone,

As Hana said, we will all have to take an important decision very soon.
Personally, I don’t really know what I want to do yet… To be honest, I’m afraid of doing something that I will regret later. I know that I want to work in the finance but I don’t like studying, and that’s why I’m not certain that I would be able to join a preparatory class because it requires a lot of work and serious to stand out.
Therefore, I keep looking for different cursus to be sure of what I want to do as it will determine my future and I don’t want to miss something which could please me more.

Concerning gap years, I think it can be beneficial but it depends on your personality. Indeed, on one hand it might be an amazing experience which can enhance your culture and make yourself grow up but on the other hand, I consider that it can be really difficult for some people to take studies up again after one year of travelling (vacations, humanitarian travel…), of learning (a new language for example or a new culture) or after having done nothing … Moreover, gap years can be a brake for studies for some students because they can lose the pleasure of studying but on the contrary, it can be very enriching for other pupils because it can open their minds. To conclude, to my mind it can be useful only for mature people.

    Thank you for reading :)
    Happy new year!

  21. Hello everyone !

As I am in 1ere, I still have time to meditate about my future job and the studies I want to do. But since last year I think that I would like to integrate a business school. I know that I like economics, maths and language, so I believe this type of school would be perfect for me.
Also, I would love to do a gap year ! To my mind, I would like to travel during a long time once in my life, and when you have a job you can't have hollidays as you want. Plus, I'm one year younger that everyone else in my class, so if I take a gap year I won't be "late" as people would think I just finished high school. Furthermore, if I want to do a business school after, a gap year would allow me to travel in english countries, and to improve my english. In fact, I always dreamt about living in London for a time.
To continue, I know people who did a gap year to improve their english, and they are very happy about it : they took time to be prepared for their studies, they met lots of people, they learnt and lived with a new culture, and they will have memories of this gap year forever, so that's quite attractive.
To finish, in my opinion a gap year is the perfect thing to do after high school, as it's the only time you can enjoy doing anything you want, and you can prepare yourself for college. In my point of view I would enjoy doing a gap year.

  22. Hey everyone ! Happy New Year !
I don't know about you, but every year on the 1st of January, I think about my good resolutions for the following year. Unfortunately, so far I haven't been able to stick to them. But this year I strongly intend to keep my goals in mind, because as you've all mentionned, next year will be pretty serious and future-determining !
Along with my new resolutions, this year I've been thinking a lot about what studies I want to pursue. Up to a few weeks ago, I had always pictured myself becoming a doctor because I've always been fascinated by the medical field, and because of the human contact this profession comes with. But the more I've been thinking about it, the more I've realized that I just don't think it's my call anymore, and that there's somehow something that has always felt wrong with this decision.
You see, my favorite subjects in school are maths and physics, as well as languages. Biology, on the other hand, interests me but more as something I would read for myself in my leisure time.
That's why I've come to the decision that next year I want to pursue a « prépa MPSI », since it seems to suit my interests better and will give me a broad range of possibilities concerning my future job.

A year gap is something that I've never really considered for myself, since it really isn't popular at all in France, and even more so, it isn't compatible with most studies since after one year you might not be considered as a student anymore. But theoretically, I find the idea of it very appealing because it gives you one year to do something that you might not be able to do at any point in your future life. As a matter of fact, one usually tries to find a job immediately after they're done studying and maybe also wants to start a family, which doesn't work well with taking a gap year. I really wish it were as popular in France as it is in many countries, like Switzerland or Germany.

Good luck with your New Year resolutions and with your decision concerning your studies !

  23. Hello everybody!

I am only in 1ère, but like you, I really think about what I will do after high school.
On the one hand, I am quit anxious and worried about that because this choice can determine our lives and our futures. I went to a Student fair to find out about schools that might interest me. I found it very helpful because I saw a few things that can please me, like different schools of communication. Moreover, I also found some ways to work in journalism. I've always been interested about those two things because communication or journalism can combine a social side and a creative side, which are things I love.
On the other hand, taking a gap year is a good idea if we don't have a specific idea of what we want to do, or if we want to improve ourself in something. Indeed, gap years allow us to travel to speak different languages and to improve them, or can allow us to work in the real life, to see how it is too.

To conclude, for me, taking a gap year is a very good idea, especially after high school because we can have time to think about something we really want to do.

    Thank you,

    1. Hi everyone,
I will personaly try to integrate a prepa, because I am very interested in the subjects taught in the ECS section  (mostly mathematics, french, history, philosophy and english ). So I would try to get a place in a good buisiness school but I am not really sure yet, because it is a lot of work and I don't not if I am able to do it. If I don't the other possibility for me would be to integrate a buisiness school at the end of the school year like EDHEC but this kind of schools is very expensive and I don't know if there are worth it. Anyway I think we don't get enough information from school and that is why it is very difficult for most of us to make a choice.
About gap years I think that would be great if you have a project but most of those who make one have no project at all and just want to rest.

  25. Hello everyone,

At first I thought that I wanted to study architecture in Germany, although my passion is mountain biking. As I talked to my parents and informed myself on the subject, I saw that it would be possible to do a formation as a mechanic in the cycling department. I thought it would be an amazing idea to connect my passion to my career. I then found a place proposing that formation in a nice city in Germany. Of course it brings a lot of changements to leave my home, but I am very much looking forward to it. As for the gap year, my brother did one, and I think it must be very nice to be able to do new things (for example an internship, an exchange, a trip or learning a new language), and it could also give you some experience or maturity.

I just wanted to correct my previous take. I said "personaly" but it is "personally " with double "L". As I talked about prepas I meant "there is a lot of work". I also made a typo. I meant " I don't know"." Those kind of scools" is plural so it's "are expensive". We also don't say "are worth is" but "worth it". About gap years it is "taking " one and not "making" one.

Therefore, I will attend a private preparation which starts in August. I'm not sure what I will choose : medicine or dental school.
To conclude, I really hope I will make it the first year because it is so much work that you can't have a social life, in fact all you do is work from early in the morning till late at night.

But I do have an opinion about gap years, I find them very interesting, especially because now's the time to travel the world, to discover new cultures, new languages and if we're afraid that it will be a lost of time we can always enroll ourselves in a study program so that we could study while still traveling.
I find Gap years to be a great opportunity but it's only a good idea if when it is over, we have a plan on what to do and what to study, because a Gap year (as it's mentioned in the name) lasts only one year so we have a full year to think of what we are going to do with our lives.

  31. Hello everyone,
This year, we must begin to choose a way for our future because we will leave high school and we will become adults soon.

Although it’s very difficult to know what we want to do in the future because we’re young, I have an idea about studies and job I would like to do. Indeed, since I was little girl, I love making cakes and I am passionate about all regarding pastry. For this reason, I would like to be a Baker because food brings hapiness, I enjoy eating good things and in pastry, there is a lot of science and I really like science. Beside, I prefer work with hands than in an office. However, before I open my bakery, I should learn a lot with three years of studies to have a « bachelor ». So, I don’t want to take gap years because my learning will be too long and I don’t want to begin to work when I am too old.

But even if I am in 1ere it is important to know what to do after. the school, that's why I am writting on this blog. I want to go in a high school.
Secondy I want to give my opinion about gap years. To my mind this years are not really useful because we do nothing in this year. So it is a bit useless.

  34. Hello everyone !
First I would like to say to Coline that if she is accepted at massena prepa, she can do a gap year and then come back to Massena, her place will be kept for the following year. Massena director confirmed that during his presentation last week.
As far as I am concerned, I don’t exactly know what kind of job I will have in the future, and I believe I’m not the only one in that case!
Nevertheless I’ve a little idea of what kind of studies I’d like to do. I’m quite interested in sciences subjects and I would love to continue studying them. But that would implies no more history, french, geography and I am quite sad at the idea of quitting these topics.
I hesitate between sciences prep school and « ecs » prep school (economical and science), I am attracted by both of them… I will have to make a decision in the next coming weeks.
Furthermore, prep school really attracts me, it sounds to me like a challenge in a defined time scale (two or three years hard work and then a good school ). I know there is a lot of work, but I am ready to take up the challenge.
As regards the gap year, I find it interesting only if you have a real project in mind, such as learning a new langage.

    1. Hi everyone!
I made a few mistakes: It's not "massena prepa" but "Massena prepa classes", and it's not "sciences subjects" but "scientific subjects", it's not "that would implies" but "that would imply", it's not "I hesitate" but "I am hesitating", it's not "of quitting these topics" but "of not studying these topics", to finish, it's not "I am attracted by both of them" but "I am attracted to both of them".

  35. Hi everybody,
First of all, I must say that I repeated last year my first grade of high school so now I have two years to complete. I don't know exactly yet what I will choose for my studies but maybe I will opt for studies in management. Concerning gap years, I don't think that it's a good idea because it can close many opportunities to continue studying. However it can be also a good opportunity to take the time for a personal projects as for example : discovering a new country, learn a new language and so on.

  36. Hi everyone!
This year, I must begin to choose what I will do in my future.
For me, it’s not really hard because I’ve always known what I will want to do: be a surgeon. In fact, since my childhood, I find the body’s mechanism really interesting and fascinating. Furthermore, I am an empathic person and I like to take care about others. So, I think I found my vocation but I don’t really know where I will study. I want to be close to my family but I have to study in a good medical school, perhaps Paris or Marseille.
I don’t know exactly what kind of surgeon I will be but I hesitate between cardio and neuro surgery.

  38. Hello!
What we will choose to do next year is very important and is a very big step in our lives.
That's why I've been thinking of that a lot and , actually, I always thinking of that now.
I think I would like to do some studies of physics and chemistry in order to become an engineer later.
About the gap year, I think it is a good way to learn another language and to know more about another culture. So it allows to develop our personal culture and can change our way to think sometimes.
But, even if a gap year can be a very good thing, I prefer finish my studies before going abroad.

  39. Hello everyone!

To begin with, it's my first year in highschool which means that in several months I'll have to choose in which branch I'll continue my studies, basically I'm hesitating between two choices "ES" or "L" but I think I'll finally go in "ES" because I like everything that touches marketing and selling products.
Moreover I've read all of your posts and it seems that time really helps to choose which profession we would like to practice, which is great because right now I have no idea of what I would like to do after highschool, I am very indecisive about my future and that is stressing me out.
Nevertheless what I know for sure is that I will never go in "S", I don't appreciate maths and I'm lost in physics.

Now, I am going to speak about gap years. I am not against it, actually I think it is just not absolutely necessary but if you have no idea of what you want to do it's a great opportunity to improve a
language, travelling if you can, and rest a bit or even do internships.

  41. Hello!
So for next year, I decided, being a big fan of sports, to study in the world of sport. Not as a professional but around sport and especially in management. For that, I decided to apply in a specialized school: ISEFAC where I have a written contest and an interview (that I have succeeded!)

As for my professional project, it will be 3 or 5 years (for more specialized in the middle)

About gap years, I think that for some, it is an opportunity to enrich their culture and foreign languages but also to reflect because some are still in the dark on their future. But I think this year should not be too much thought and that the best will be to quickly find a school that can match us and bring us to what we want to do!

    1. I made a mistake: it is not "on their future" but "regarding their future"
