Roaring twenties : women and fashion. During the roaring 20's, the place of women in the society starded to evolved in a good way. This evolution leads to small changes of the mores like the regress of the average wedding age and the important growth of divorces. Women houselife has also improved, womens started to live in houses with greater confort wich greatly helped them for the domestic work. All thoses changes led womens to ask themselves if they have to favor work instead of the homelife. Despite their wich to work more the population of active womens has not moved that much. Women could only apply to work that requires low level of degree and responsabilities, moreover women average salary remains very low compared to men average salary. In consequence womens hardly fought for their rights but in absence of an equal pay, womens won in terms of political parity. Indeed, thanks to that womens voted for the first time in 1920 for the presidential and legislative elections. Beside womens in general, the 20's is a period for the fashion, during thoses years fashion has developed in a way that its footprint remains still alive. Womens of the middle class discovered: lipstick, high Heel, short hair, shorter skirt and loads of others things. The most fashionables of them even started to smoke and drink like a men, there is even an ambiguity female-male in accessories worn like tight or cane, in addition the boy cup even became trendy. Thoses changes symbolize the rebelion, the independance and the emancipation of womens. Despite everything when they hanged out at night they were very feminine, the important world is elegance. The free women wants to move without being embarrassed , in answer to that they got the idea to shorten their skirt. Dance became essential to womens of the 20's, they danced like afro-americans. Womens rebels against beauty decided by the man, they ended up deciding of their own beauty.
Sorry I have made couple of mistakes : I should have written : "Marrying age" "housewives "home life" has also improved " I should have written women without -s I should have written "comfort wich really" and "to do domestic work"
The roaring twenties were a era in the 1920's and more precisely from the end of the first World War to the wall street crash in 1929. It started in the USA bit rapidly spread in Europe during the same period. This cultural and social movement had an impact on every kind of art such as literature, cinema, music or fashion. This period happened thanks to the thriving economy : The GDP of the USA passed from 79.9 billion to 104.4 billion dollars in one decade. As I said previously this period had a serious impact on music, indeed, in the music industry, it was the era of Jazz and Blues with some famous musicians such as Blind Lemon Jefferson and Bessie Smith.
Let’s talk about some important people in this particulary type of music which is the jazz : The most important person who popularize this type of music was Louis Armstrong: he is the most famous jazz musician of all time. In addition to his hundreds of recordings, he is remembered by most as a lovable and humorous character who can be seen in a dozen Hollywood films and on a variety of television appearances that show up on You Tube. Louis Armstrong, who was born Aug. 4, 1901, developed into a major musical force and innovator as a trumpeter, singer and an entertainer. Although he was not the first jazz musician, he permanently changed the music early in its development. In addition, he put a blues feeling into every song, his expressive style was voice-like, and his tone was so beautiful that he helped to define the sound of the trumpet itself. It was largely due to Louis Armstrong powerful playing that jazz changed into a music that put the focus on brilliant and adventurous soloists. Among those who became influenced by his phrasing while adapting it to their own musical personalities were Bing Crosby , Billie Holiday, Cab Calloway and Ella Fitzgerald among countless others. As the most accessible of all jazz performers and a universally beloved figure, Louis Armstrong introduced jazz to a countless number of listeners while symbolizing the music for millions. His importance to jazz, whether through his solos, singing or ability to win over listeners, cannot be measured. The history of jazz, American music and music in general would be much different if there had not been a Louis Armstrong.
I am going to talk about the Jazz. First, I am going to talk about the influences of the Jazz. Jazz come from African Traditional music: during the Slave Trade, a lot of Africans became slaves and came in the United States. They brought with them their traditional music (which was sometimes played with drums). It was used to support them morally during their work. We can call it the “work songs”. Religious music is an other influence of th Jazz like gospel or negro spirituals that Afro-Americans people sing at the church or at a special religious event. Gospel and negro spirituals are generally religious anthems. In the XX century, a lot of black people learnt to play “European” instruments, so the Jazz come from European music too. The last influences are the Ragtime (kind of music for piano inspired by classic music) and the Blues (kind of melancholic music created by black Americans). Then, Jazz was born at the beginning of the XX century created by the black Americans and it wasn’t well-considered at the beginning but after it was diffused all around the world. The first Jazz recording was in 1917 played by the Origina Dixieland Jass Band in New Orleans, which was a band of five white musicians. The first jazz movements were the Dixieland and New Orleans Jazz. The word “Jazz” was mainly diffused in 1917 by Louis Amstrong (singer and trumpet player). Jazz was played in Jazz Club and since 1940 New York is the Jazz world Capital. The most famous Jazz Clubs were Savoy Ballroom or Cotton Club. Jazz golden age was during the 30’ with the “middle jazz” which stood out from the “New Orleans Jazz” (bigger orchestra and use of a soloist). Then appeared a lot of Jazz types like Bebop, Cool Jazz, Free Jazz, Modal Jazz, … Based on those informations, we can give now a definition of the Jazz even if it's not very representative : to know what Jazz really is, we have to listen it (I recommand the song "Sophisticated Lady" which is interpreted by Billie Holliday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald or "Ain't got no, I got Life" sang by Nina Simone), it's very difficult to give a definition with words. So Jazz is a kind of music which is a mix of African rhythms, classic music, blues and ragtime; based mostly on improvisation. The Jazz main instruments are wind instruments like saxophone, trumpet, trombone, clarinet and string instruments like piano, double bass and drums; there can be a or several singer(s) too. The most famous musicians of the Jazz are, as singers : Billie Holliday, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Louis Amstrong; as a saxophonist :Charlie Parker; as Trumpet players: Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillepsie and Louis Amstrong; as a pianis there is Duke Ellington
Sorry, I made some mistakes: there is no article in front of "jazz", it's "at Church" instead of "at the Church" and it's "went to the USA" instead of "came in the USA".

I would like to talk about Marylin Monroe, one of the most emblematic actress of the 20th century. To begin, the year 1946 brought a lot of changes for Monroe. She not only divorced her husband, Jimmy Dougherty, but she also signed her first movie contract. With the movie contract came a new name and image; she began calling herself "Marilyn Monroe" and dyed her hair blonde, though her acting career didn't really take off until a few years later. As Marilyn Monroe became more and more famous, she won several well-known film awards such as golden globes. By the way she usedher notoriety to change the woman's image. By comparison, the woman who was initially subjected to her husband and really did not have freedom of expression became an independent and fatal woman. To sum up, I chose to talk about Marilyn Monroe because I think she was an important step in the evolution of women.
Thomas Jefferson, a former President of the United States (the 3rd), participated in the drafting of the Declaration of Independence of the United States in 1776. The text states that Men are equal: yet slaves do not have the same rights as whites. He is also the originator of the law on religious freedom. Jefferson proposes a law prohibiting the importation of slaves. Jefferson votes to abolish trafficking in Virginia. He had a law passed by the Virginia assembly that allowed slaves to be freed individually by will. Jefferson himself had slaves, a freed Black mathematician and inventor, sent Jefferson a copy of his Almanac, in order to convince him of the intellectual abilities of Blacks. But Jefferson thinks that slaves are too important to the country's economy, and that it would be dangerous to free them.
I will tell you about two American writers of the 20 century who have both won Nobel Prizes of literature.
First of all Toni Morison, born in 18 february 1931 is a novelist university publisher. These best-known works are: Beloved and Song of Salomon. She had the Nobel Prize for literature in 1993. And she is to date the eighth African-American woman to have received this distinction. After we have John Steinbeck, born in 27 february 1902 and he died on 20 december 1968. He is a novelist corresponding to the war. His mouvement is lost generation. These main works are: the Pearl, Est of Eden, the Grapes of Wrath ... He had the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962, but also the Presidential Medal of Freedom(1964) and Publizer Prize (1940)
Hello everybody, today I'm here to tell you about an important event that took place in the United States. Indeed, on January 8th 1863, begin the works of the first iron path transcontinental. Abraham Lincoln, president of the E.U gives the green light in the creation of a railway connecting Socramento in California to Lowa City which is located more than 2 500km in the East. These works are managed by Charles Crocker, it's the outcome of a project pursued for years because the idea shakes the minds of the Americans since 1830. The works of this construction will last 6 long years because there were two major obstacles namely : the rocky chain and the mountains of the Nevada. Otherwise, Asa Whitney and Theodore Judah and 4 men of affair named "big four" are important characters in the realization of this path. In conclusion, what I discovered falls into the notion of "ideas of progress". This is a historic moment in the process of unification of the United Stades, before if took almost 6 months of travel full of dangers to link east to west, after these works, the travel lasted no more one week only. It's the economic take-off of California.
Hello everyone, I made some mistakes : -"begin" instead of : "began" -"These works are managed by Charles Crocker" instead of : "Charles Crocker was in charged of that the construction works" - "4 men of affair" instead of : " 4 business men"

I have worked about the roaring 20s. more precisely about the jazz. The Roaring 20's is known for a variety of reasons one of which includes the infamous, Jazz Age or also known better as The Golden Age of Jazz. Jazz music could be found almost anywhere in the 1920's from the radio to Speakeasies. During a time of growth, jazz music rapidly developed. First heard about from a group of kids at Austin High School in Chicago, known for their improvisation and arrangement of their music they quickly become famous throughout the United States. Soon other strides in Jazz music would be developed such as stride piano and Chicago Style. As the age of Jazz prospered so did the players, some of the most famously known include, Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Art Tatum, Louis Armstrong, and more. Originally jazz music was known for its simple rhythm but in the 1920's it progressed to a detailed musical arrangement, that just not anyone could play. The Jazz age known for it's accomplishments in music and the pleasure that one took from the music. The Jazz Age not only changed music but also changed the lifestyles of many. People became less conservative and wanted more to just have a good time. Later in the Jazz Age with the lack of alcohol, speakeasies developed where most jazz musicians played their music. Some of the most famous jazz artists were African American, originating from places like Harlem, NY. Jazz tended to revolve around the major cities of New Orleans, Detroit, and Missouri. Where the age of jazz would be cultivated by various artists and instruments. The instruments which were mainly involved in the jazz age include instruments of the brass and reed family, providing the musky sound of jazz that the listeners so enjoyed. The Jazz Age not only transformed the music industry but social aspect of life.
Hi everybody, There are so many important people and events in the USA, so I will write about only a few today, that happened during the 1960s. The Cold War was in full swing during this decade.
In class, we had to do research about important events, and I worked on the 1960s events. I learned that the United States financed a lot of country for war against the USSR, like in 1961 during the Vietnam War: President John Fitzgerald Kennedy (the first non-protestant president, who was elected on November 8, 1960) financed South Vietnam. South Vietnam fought against North Vietnam who was an USSR ally. I also learned that during the Cold War, the Space Race was really important. The first man walking on the moon is American: Neil Armstrong on July 21, 1969. The 1960s was also a major decade for Human Rights. Indeed, Afro-American obtain in 1965 the right to vote; the Civil Right Act declares in 1964 that every discrimination form is forbidden in public places; in 1967 interracial marriage is allowed. Afro-American had to stand up for their rights and demonstrate in the streets. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were the two most important black leaders in the USA. They organized non-violent (Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.) and violent (Malcolm X) marches, like the one for Jobs and Freedom on Washington (followed by Dr. King’s speech “I have a dream”) on August 28, 1963.
Those events are some of the most important, but so much more happened during the 1960s and I’m looking forward to learning more about the other decades too.
Hello everyone, I'm sorry, I made some mistakes : it is "North Vietnam which/that" and not "who", and instead of "the first man walking on the moon", it is "the first man to walk on the moon"
I want to talk about Angela Davis. Angela Yvonne Davis was born on January 26, 1944 in Alabama, a "Deep South" state. Angela is an activist, feminist, anti-racist, anti-prison figure, wanted by the FBI in the 1970s because of her links with the Black Panters. Angela is interested in the fate of all African Americans, especially those of women and inmates. Angela wish a socialist revolution which would upset the social order and finally establish equality between human beings. Every humans, regardless of their skin colour, gender, social status. She is in all the struggles against racial discrimination, not to mention those for gender equality. She embodies the perseverance and the faith in ideas without ever being perceived as a woman limited by ideology ; on the contrary she follows the world’s evolution and thinks of it both as a philosopher and a revolutionary. Angela does not just participate in struggles or lock herself in her office to think about the world: she combines both sides, practice and theory. This is her strength. I wanted to talk about Angela Davis because I think the world needs strong, determined and free women and she is a very good example.
Jazz was at its peak, its golden period which was known as the Jazz Age. Famous black artist such as Louis Amstrong, King Olivier and Duke Ellington were the leaders in the music. Cars offered young people the possibility to drive to Jazz clubs to dance. However, some older people criticized Jazz, they found it to be vulgar and made young people behaved wildy, without control. Nevertheless, Jazz was in full swing. Jazz bands played in dance halls such as Savoy in New York city or Aragon in Chicago.Up north in some clubs Blacks and Whites mingled. Thus, this Features on the notion spaces and exchanges.
Noetheless, the roaring twenties was also a period of social tension because of the "Bootleggers" and their intoxicating liquors. An Amendment in the contitution was voted to prevent the progress of illegal alcohol. This period was known as the "Prohibition". The illegal alcohol business was mostly run by the mafia. Because of the 18th Amendmend to the constitution in 1919, demanded that from January, 16th 1920, all tavern, pub and saloon were closed in the USA. For some middle class white Americans, it was a way to control people who moved from cities to cities. Prohibition was not the only cause social tension. The African side American move's from the southern country to the nothern cities called "the Great Migration" created problems, because of that million people in some cities like Indiana or Ilinois joined the Kuklux Klan and a restrictive imigration law excluded some people like Asians or East European imigrant.
The roaring twenties began after the first world war , 1914-1918 , the period was known for the important political and social changes in the USA.There was economic growth and people had money to spend. They bought goods such as home appliances like refregirators , radio or washing machine & clothes, the society was called a consumer society. Automobiles were becoming common. People went to the movies which was also a common way of entertainment. Technological progress was obvious and in the field of science, medecine had also improved. These ideas are linked to the notion of ideas of progress. That period underlined also progress for women.Women displayed the new image of modern women who wanted more freedom than those of the previous generations. They fought for voting rights and demanded Amendment to the constitution (19th). They didn't want to be simply housewives , they wanted to work outside the house. Those demands changed American families'lives.Women wanted to have less children to be able to smoke in public places , to drink alcohol and go dancing in jazz club. They cut their hair and dressed differently .So they were known as "The Flappers" women demanded power , so the notion is places and forms of powers.
Let's talk about some important people and events in the USA Hello, Last year I saw with my class a film which was about the segregation in the US. There was a lot of social discrimination, an unforgivable phenomenon in a democratic state. In fact the afro-americans could not even vote. They had this right in 1965 because of a lot of demonstrations. Before 1965 Blacks were discriminated, wounded by the police... The famous Martin Luther King fought for afro-americans rights. It is interessting to see that he was supported by the USSR in his fight. Ewan Lagain TS3

They brought with them their traditional music (which was sometimes played with drums). It was used to support them morally during their work. We can call it the “work songs”.
Sorry, I made some mistakes: there is no article in front of "jazz", it's "at Church" instead of "at the Church" and it's "went to the USA" instead of "came in the USA".

instruments which were mainly involved in the jazz age include instruments of the brass and
reed family, providing the musky sound of jazz that the listeners so enjoyed. The Jazz Age

Hi everybody,
ReplyDeleteThere are so many important people and events in the USA, so I will write about only a few today, that happened during the 1960s.

Hello everyone,
DeleteI'm sorry, I made some mistakes : it is "North Vietnam which/that" and not "who", and instead of "the first man walking on the moon", it is "the first man to walk on the moon"
Thanks for reading,

I want to talk about Angela Davis.
ReplyDeleteAngela Yvonne Davis was born on January 26, 1944 in Alabama, a "Deep South" state.
Sorry I made a mistake: every human

Noetheless, the roaring twenties was also a period of social tension because of the "Bootleggers" and their intoxicating liquors. An Amendment in the contitution was voted to prevent the progress of illegal alcohol. This period was known as the "Prohibition". The illegal alcohol business was mostly run by the mafia. Because of the 18th Amendmend to the constitution in 1919, demanded that from January, 16th 1920, all tavern, pub and saloon were closed in the USA.
ReplyDeleteFor some middle class white Americans, it was a way to control people who moved from cities to cities.

Automobiles were becoming common. People went to the movies which was also a common way of entertainment. Technological progress was obvious and in the field of science, medecine had also improved. These ideas are linked to the notion of ideas of progress.
ReplyDeleteThat period underlined also progress for women.Women displayed the new image of modern women who wanted more freedom than those of the previous generations.
Let's talk about some important people and events in the USA
ReplyDeleteHello,
Last year I saw with my class a film which was about the segregation in the US.
