Jacques Chirac died last week, what do you think of him (as a president and as a man) ?

  1. Hy everyone !
First of all, I’m quite ashamed to say that but I don’t really know what Jacques Chirac « made » when he was the French president. Nevertheless, thanks to my history teacher, I know that he made a speech for the « Raffle du Vel d’Hiv » event. For the first time, the government took its responsabilities in the Nazi collaboration during the Second World War.
Therefore, as a person, I think he was a clever and rational man although he cheated on his wife many times. Even if he wasn’t in love with her, that’s not an excuse. Besides I read in an article that he was in love with a journalist but for his career (also because he was an ambitious man), he stayed with Bernadette to be elected.
To sum up, I think J. Chirac was both, a good man and a bad husband.
    Goodbye!

  2. Hello!
We studied a little about his life in History class, when we worked on the Second World War. Jacques Chirac was our French president from 1995 to 2005.
He was known for his stand against the American-led assault on Iraq, his recognition of the collaborationist French Government's role in deporting Jews, and his reduction of the presidential term from 7 years to 5 through a referendum in 2000.
However, in 2011, the Paris court declared Chirac guilty of diverting public funds and abusing public trust, and gave him a two-year suspension prison sentence. Furthermore, he marked an important break in History, and allowed the work of memoirs to progress.
Finally, I don't know a lot of things about his life, unlike Clarisse who said, he cheated on his wife many times. Despite that, I think that he was a smart and strategic person.

  3. Hello,
After his death, our History teacher talked about Jacques Chirac. I realized that even he made mistakes (he was prosecuted for embezzlement, he dissolved the assembly) Jacques Chirac marked fifth Republic by being a minister and president for 2 terms. Also, he was the first French president to recognize the involvement of France in the Jews deportations during a speech in 1994, it was a strong moment and helpful for memory work.
    Goodbye

  4. Hello,

Jack Chirac had 40 years of political life and held many positions such as:
Prime Minister, Member of the European Parliament, mayor of Paris but above all he was President from May 17, 1995 to May 16, 2007 then member of the Constitutional Council until his death on September 26, 2019
According to polls he has perceived as the first president with De Gaulle.

I think that Chirac had some ways to embody the France that the inhabitants appreciated, it was a "political giant" important but besides this fact it was a man with high quality and it is a great loss for the country despite some unpleasant actions such as the resumption of nuclear tests in Mururoa with irradiations of a lagoons that caused multiple malformations but also the case Marshall Schuller it will remain in the history and heart of the French.

  5. Hello !
I think that Jacques Chirac was quite a good French president, although out of the twelve years he spent in power, five were "cohabition" years, meaning that he didn't have any real power, as the parliamentary majority that had been elected was hostile to him, so he couldn't do much. But he did a few important things : he did not support the American-led Iraq war, which turned out to be a total disaster, and vetoed it at the Security Council of the United Nations, and he acknowledged that the French state was reponsible for the "Vel' d'Hiv'" raid, which was still something very controversial in the nineties, so that was brave of him. Moreover, he was very close to the people of France, especially peasants and people coming from rural areas, but he also knew a lot about urban life, as he had been mayor of Paris for 18 years.

I don't know much about his private life, but I don't really care about wether he had mistresses or not, as I think that we shouldn't judge our polititians on how they behave in private, but on what they did for our country.

  6. Hello everyone,

I don't know much about Jacques Chirac however I find it tragic that he died.
Personally I think that he is a very lucky man because he will forever be remembered by the french since he was the president between 1995 and 2007.
A lot of people have split views about him, I don't really have an opinion on the subject since I have never been very interested in politics, but I do believe that he was a good president.
Some people will remember him as a hero and others in a bad way, I think that one should always remember people in the best way possible and try to be positive and forget the bad parts of life therefor I will remember him as a good president.

    Thank you for reading

  7. Hello everybody!
Jacques Chirac, former president pass away, one month ago. He was Prime Minister of Mitterrand and the French President during twelve years. He has marked the history of our country.
As a President, he made good decisions like in July 1995, the recognition of the involvement of the French state in the deportation of Jews during the Second World War, in particular of the “Rafle du vel d’Hiv”. He also refused to participate in the Iraq war so he had opposed the decisions of the United States of America. Under his presidency, military service will no longer be compulsory.
Nevertheless, he made also bad decisions for example he aggravate the public debt and the rate of unemployment. He such made a mistake when he dissolve the French parliament, because the political and economic situation was catastrophic during this period.
As men, nobody can rejoice in his death, even if everybody has the right not to appreciate the person he was. I totally agree with people who says that he was a misogynist; he said, “For me, the ideal woman is the woman of the old time, who work hard, who serves men at the table, never sits with them and doesn’t speak”. I thought it shocking from a man who must embody respect and intelligence. How can he wants to establish social policies for the French when we exclude half of them? This reveals the real nature of our politicians.
    Best regards

  8. Hello,

Jacques Chirac was a great man for our country, despite the fact that I was very young when he was in power, my parents never told me bad about this great man because he was heroic for France and the French .
He marked the Fifth Republic by being minister and president for two terms. In addition, he was the first French president to recognize the involvement of France in the deportations of Jews during a speech in 1994, it was a highlight and useful for the work of memory that we are currently trying to study in history. All the French, even those who did not like him, paid tribute to him because he was and always will be a great man.

  9. Hello,
Jacques Chirac has occupied an important place in the political life of France. At the beginning, he was apointed prime minister in 1974, then we resigned and became mayor of Paris in 1977. Then he went to the presidential elections of 1981, it was a failure. In the 1995 election he was elected for two-year term.
Jacques Chirac was loved by many French pepole despite having dissolved the general asssembly or was prosecuted for embezzlement. Despite this, Jacques Chirac fought against the American assault during the Iraq war or even recognized the responsibility of the French state in the deportation of the Jews. This is why Jacques Chirac a man that has occupied an important place in the fifth Repiblic, a man with a big heart to which many French people saw each other.

  10. He was really popular because he had humanitarian qualities and was really close to people. He did something great because he resisted to Americans who wanted to wage war on Iraq. He was really cultivated, liked apples and he created a nice museum.

  12. Hello everyone !

I think Jacques Chirac was propably one of the best political figure of the two last centuries. Also in my opinion, he had visionary ideas and saw things that current presidents don't ever see like climate change. Indeed, he made a speech about that when he was president, although at this period that was not really an important topic as it is right now. He also recognized France's responsibility in Jewish Deportation which for a president, was a heavy charge. I am not personaly affected by his death but I think he was a good person and a great president.

We are forced to pay homage to our former president of the Republic. Jacques Chirac was a great man for our our country. He was Mr Mitterrand's Prime Minister and the French President during 12 years.
We saw, that he was the first who recognize the Jewish Genocide during a speech in 1994. I don't remember Chirac when he was president because I was too young, but he was described as a man with a lot of courage ... Jacques Chirac, Rest In Peace

  14. Hello everybody,
I agree with the idea of using less our phones and computers but we should talck about it more so that people understand the gravity of the situation. Furthermore I think that people who make the efort of eating less meat are brave. I couldn't stop using my phone because I love watching TV shows, speack and exchange message with my friends but I could start using it less. Finally one can say that internet is part of our daily life.

  15. Hy everyone,
I think that it is very sad that Jacques chirac died, but it is always sad when someone dies and I find that people have talked about it too mmuch. Indeed it is part of the past and there are many more important problems : war, thousands of orphans abandoned, attacks and malnourishment in Africa... I am not really interested in politics.
