The Importance of Being Earnest

Can you explain what the title means.

  1. The title of Oscar Wilde's most successful play The Importance of Being Earnest features a salient??? pun in the form of the word "earnest", which means "honest", and "truthful" and the name "Ernest" which is the name of the alter ego that main character Jack Worthing uses to slide away from responsibilities and do as he pleases.
The genius of this title depends on a pun between the adjective "earnest," meaning honest or sincere, and the name "Ernest."
In the title, "The" highlights the word "Importance", it emphasizes "Importance", which highlights "Earnest".
Importance means effectivness, influence, impact, significance... We can replace the word "importance" with "impact".
Furthermore, the main character who's called Ernest has a name which rhymes with the word "earnest", and whose significance is: sincerity, honesty, genuine, outspoken, real, serious, straightforward...
In addition, people who are called with the name "Ernest", based on the dictionnary of names are supposed to be passionate, compassionate, intuitive, romantic, and have a magnetic personality; they have humanitarian qualities, are broad minded, and generous.
Just with the title, Oscar Wilde wants to send a message : his title is something like a summary of his play, and in life, it is important to be earnest, to be generous...

Actually, when considering the whole story, the word « Earnest » can be construed as the importance of being honest, and « Earnest » can be linked with the name « Ernest ». Moreover, it’s important to be « Ernest » because both Cecily and Gwendolen only wanted to marry a man called « Ernest »

  4. Hello !
"The importance of being Earnest" is a famous play written by Oscar Wilde. We read the book and studied it in english class.
First of all, the title refers to the the main character : John Ernest Worthing. In the play he invented a fake brother to avoid his duties. Thus he can be considered as a dishonest character at first sight. Nevertheless, afterwards he will be trapped by his own lie, so he will finally tell Gwendolen and Cecily the truth. Appropriately the title means that it is worthwhile to be straightforward to avoid misunderstandings in relationships . In addition, for John Ernest Worthing and Algernon, it is essential to litteraly being Ernest to marry respectively Gwendolen and Cecily because they only want a husband named Ernest.

  5. As we learned in class, the title is made to highlight the word « Earnest » which means to be truthful, honest. It is also a play on words with the name of Ernest which is used by the two main characters when they create themselves false identities and therefore are not honest.

  7. Hello, the play "the importance of being Earnest" is a comedy written by Oscar Wilde, this title actually reveals the end of the play. In fact, being "earnest" means being honest which is the opposite of the main character John Worthing who invents a brother named Ernest to escape his responsibilities as well as Algernon who lies about his identity. It is at the end of the play that the title takes all its meaning because lying turns against John and Algernon because Cecily and Gwendolen are supposed to marry a man named Ernest.

Today , i will talk about Oscar Wilde's play « The importance of being earnest ».
Particularly the meaning of the title.
First of all, the word “Earnest' is a synonym of : honest, sincere, truthful the word “Earnest” is also a rhyme of Ernest.
John Ernest Worthing represents the notion of duplicity , he create a false identity his brother “Ernest” to justify his duties.
In addition ,it's a little bit paradoxical because Ernest is at first sight a dishonest person but the word “Earnest” which means honest refers to this character.

  13. Hello,
First of all, "The Importance of Being Earnest" is a play written by Oscar Wilde, he called this book like this because he wanted to make a play on words. Indeed, the main character pretends to be a man named Ernest, and the word "earnest" means "forthright" and "genuine" if we want to use synonyms. So, it's important to be earnest because on the one hand it's a good quality and on the other hand the name Ernest permits to find a wife. Effectively, in the play, Cecily and Gwendolen want to marry their man because they are both named Ernest and without this name, they wouldn't marry them.
