Digital pollution

We all use technological appliances (TV, smartphones, computers,...), but they produce a lot of greenhouse gaz. Some people are willing to reduce their meat consumption or to avoid taking the plane to travel in order to reduce their impact on the Earth, but they don't reduce the amount of technology they're using.
What do you think about it ? Are you willing to stop using those instruments, or at least stick to a minimal use ?

  1. Hello everyone,

These days the big majority of people use smartphones, they are a very handy device which make us able to communicate with people all over the world. We have gotten used to being able to use google whenever one wishes to or just send a message to a friend in a matter of seconds, but once, not that long ago, smartphones didn't exist, and I don't think that life was any less exciting then. Furthermore we are now conscious of the damage that we are doing to our planet, and instead of acting on it we just speak about it, quite like I am doing right now, typing on my computer and writing about how dangerous computers and telephones are for the environment.
The problem is that now days we are obliged in certain ways to use internet to be able to communicate and learn new things, but that doesn't mean that one has to spend all day watching TV. I think that one can comprise by using our smartphones when need be but not texting all day, or by watching the news or a series on TV but not spending all afternoon in front of a screen.

  2. I think that the Climate change is one of the most important issues of our days. However, I think that if some people are ready to change their lifestyle by not eating meat or not take the plane anymore, then their use of smarphones must also be reduced. It's important for me to preserve the Earth so if it's necessary to reduce to minimal use to smartphone I would do it. Finally, I think that if the all people makes a little effort we can help solve climate change.

  3. Hello !

Nowadays climate change is the biggest problem. We are all concerned about this. It is a mondial topic. Nobody can avoid this subject , and everyone is talking about it.
Everyone must react to climate change. Everyone must do their best to reduce their carbon footprint and must be aware of the severity of this situation.

However, according to some experts on the issue of climate change, individual actions are no longer useful. Indeed, we are such in a climate emergency that the only thing that could permit us to reverse the climate change would be global actions at state and nation level.
On top of that, even some experts think that it is already too late, and they started to theorize the collapse, theory saying that in the future years our societies would collapse.

Even if I know this, I think we should still minimize our use of technological appliances because each action , as small as it is , is important.

  4. Hello,
In my opinion, I think when we see how the world is changing, we can't stop using technological appliances because for example it's work-related. So I think, that we can still use these appliances but only for importants things, it could be the last way when we are faced with a situation where we don't have the solution. We could find our entertainment elsewhere but when we see the human mentality, I think that it will not happen.

  5. Hello everyone !
We know that digital pollution is the most important form of pollution presently in our world. Indeed, with the development of technologies, internet is overextended, everyone has a smartphone, a computer and household and it has a real impact on Earth and also on human being. According to me, for students in high school it is hard to use less those instruments because it is a way quite easy to communicate with anyone we want all over the world and also to search informations on websites to learns some things by ourselves and work. So it is very convenient at our age and even if I would like to reduce my digital consommation, I think nowadays we are kind of addicted to technologies. Moreover, I think there is a paradox because like I said, digital pollution is the most polluting but also when we talk about ecology and we try to sensitize people about this, most of the time we use internet and social media.

  6. Nowadays most of the people use new technologies to communicate with their family, friends and the world in general. In another hand, humans use several technologies to research or to buy things, even for photos or for other reasons. But they produce a lot of greenhouse gas which has a dangerous impact on the environment and leads to global warming.
To reduce the formation of CO2 some people could reduce their travel frequency, isolate their houses, get an electric car, change their phone every 4 or 5 years.
News Technologies are almost necessary and crucial today for a huge part of people who can not live without them.
In my opinion it is necessary for all of us to reduce our utilisation of those technologies. I do not consider myself as dependent to my smartphone because I have other occupations.

    Thanks for reading.

  8. Hello everybody!
Honestly? I’m not ready to change my way of life… In fact, I like drive, travel, buy my clothes at ready-to-wear brands, eat meat, but more simply heat my home as I want. I am aware that our Western way of life has a real impact in the global warming, and also that our society is focused on the use of technologies like smartphones, computers, television… I think that a person who deprive himself of using technologies to preserve the planet, has no real impact. In my opinion the decisions who have a real impact on the global warming are those taken by the leaders of our world. The fact of sorting my e-mails can’t compete the withdrawal of the USA from Paris’s agreement. However, I am aware of the urgency of the situation of our planet, it’s necessary that radical decisions must be taken, indeed I trust our generation…
    Best regards!

  9. Hello, in our society technology is ubiquitous, nowadays each person has a smartphone that he uses several times a day in order to communicate with other people, but not only, people also use their smartphone to go on the internet, to locate themselves with a GPS or to go on social networks. But this continued use at home, indeed, many people have a smartphone but also a TV and a computer that we use to entertain or grow. In my opinion, reducing its usage time is feasible if it is to protect the environment but it would only have an impact if it is done on a large scale, by setting up, for example, a daily usage time for each person.

  10. Hello,
We know that digital pollution is the most important form of pollution presently in our world.
But to be honest, I can't change my way of life because my life is directed by the digital...
About the meat consumption,I can reduce because I eat a lot of meat, so i can reduce but don't stop totally.
To finish, my family and me try to take the plane only for the long travel where we are forced to take the plane. For the short travel, we favor the car or the train to reduce a little the pollution...
But all the planet must do efforts if not, this will have serious consequences mostly for the next generations.

  11. Indeed i do believe we have to act in agreement with our ideologies! I would be totally ready to stick to a minimal use of technology such as 1 hour per day; yet for people who are challenged with learning disorders such as Dyslexia, I must admit that computers and their different sofware such as spell check or geogebra are very useful! In my kitchen we only use manual ustensils that I inherited from my great grandmother. I also tend to cycle a lot rather than riding motor vehicles.

  12. Hello,

Well, to begin with, saving the Earth is a great initiative that people take nowdays. We are worried about our future and that’s a great thing. To my mind, every small initiative is important : for example if people are willing to reduce their meat consumption, it means that they are trying to act in order to save the Earth. But slowly, we are going to take more important decisions, for example reduce our mobile consumption which is another important decision. Finally, I’d like to add that every step that we do in order to protect our World is important and counts. I hope we’ll see a result very soon.

  13. Hello everyone,

To my mind, earth pollution is really worrying and all of us should be interesting in because we all are concerned and impacted. I also think that everyone must do something to not increase the global warming, in deed do a bit for the environment is very beneficial and important. On top of that, stop eating meat or avoid to taking the plane could be a good thing and it is sure that stopping this things have a good impact. Reduce our technology is also a good thing because all the new technology produce carbone dioxide emissions and It is definitely not good. But could we really stop using it ? I don’t think so, the technology like our smartphone, computer and more are essentiel in our society but I also think that we could content ourself with the necessary. To conclude, someone who stop eating meat or stop taking the planes or someone who reduce his technology is really good and positive and I don’t think that it is contradictory to use smartphone and to not eat meat because of the global warming. Everyone should do something for the pollution but all actions are good!

  14. Hello !
To begin with, there are more and more persons who become aware of our environment and try to do something. Which is a really good thing
(nevertheless some people still believe that our planet is in good health and I think this is the real problem here). Of course, you can’t change all your habits if you want to be adapted to our society. That’s why you can’t stop eating animals, stop taking plane and stop using your phone. Besides we are dependent from our smartphones or our computers and Internet. Children (2 or 3 years old) don’t know how to speak but they already know how to use their mother’s phone. If I had the option between having my phone for one hour or not at all, I will take the first option. Because I like to chat with my friends and family. Therefore stop using those instrument is impossible.
    Bye !

  15. It seems to me that two worlds are existing today: the real world and the digital world. Indeed most of the population use new technologies such as computers, phones or televisions. Parents give their children a smartphone since their very young age. We all grow up with internet, and our social life takes sometimes a biggest place as the real one. Technological appliances can be very useful to work, to do researches or to keep contact all over the world. But their utilization can be really dangerous. On one hand it becomes hard to live without them. And on the other hand some medical researches prove the danger on our health and on the planet. Indeed phones, for example, produce a lot of greenhouse gas which can impact the brain and becomes a cancer. In fact these instruments are also one of the causes of the Earth’s destruction. I don’t think that we could live without phones or computers because they have taken a huge place in the daily-life. But we could find solutions to use them less or to be more careful of the dangers, especially the consequences on the planet. If it is too hard to reduce our consummation, we can still have other possibilities not to pollute the environment such as using electric cars and public transports. In my opinion, if everyone make a little effort, the world could already be better.

As far as I'm concerned I already stopped eating meat and I travel as much as possible by walking however I still use maybe too much internet and new technologies and I don't think I will stop using them bc today they're too useful for me and today people can use them "environmentally", for example by using a web browser called "Ecosia" or by not changing our phone too often or to sell it to people in need instead of putting it in a been.

I think that Digital Pollution is a real problem, especially with our generation. We are a generation that is in need of these digital devices to live. Now everybody need his phone, his computer or something else. I won't be willing to stop using my electronic devices because nowadays if you don't have your phone, you are disconnected from the world and you don't know what is going on, so that's why i wont be willing to stop using my electronic devices but i would totally be down to stick to a minimal use to save our planet

  18. Hello,

About this subject, I think that even if we try to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, we have to mobilize a large part of our global population to make it start to be effective, so we have to limit our consumption at the same time, but if a minority of the population starts to do so, it won't cause as much changes as we think, we have to change our technology, so that it doesn't release a large amount of greenhouse gases and it will be balanced. But it's difficult to convince people to limit their consumption of technology because to conclude the Internet, the millions of calls made, the researches, makes people's lives easier and make the world go round today.

  19. Hello everyone,

First of all, digital pollution is the most important form of pollution and only a few people are aware of it and yet it is a phenomenon that concerns everyone.
Indeed, the evolution of the technology, internet has developed this type of pollution with social networks, emails but also all the electronic manufacture, especially their components which are extremely polluting and sometimes even toxic. But with all this data, everyone is on their phone, their computer and we do not really realize that these actions affect our lives but also on the planet. For me, I know that this pollution is serious but I don’t think I can stop using those instruments because in our days they are a part of our life. After I can try and reduce my consumption by stopping to be in my phone all the time or being on my computer and I think everybody should do the same.

  20. Hello,
I think that climate change is a very important subject and we have to take it seriously. However, our habits change through time and development. We are in an era of new technology inventions. That’s why I think it will be too bad to stop research and innovations.
But I’m sure we can change our habits easily by using the same phone for a long time or to buy a second hand or refurbished phone. We would use less precious metal. Also, we can use Ecosia as a search engine, indeed, they use solar energy and they plan to plant trees.
    Goodbye.

  21. Hello everyone,

Speaking for myself this subject is quite complex because yes, the use of technological appliances is indeed polluting our planet but they are also used in our everyday life. For instance, we need our phones to communicate with each other, and I don't know a lot of people who will accept to stop using their phones. Another example is that we need an electronic appliance to post this blog ! In other words, technological appliances are in every aspect of our life and we can say that it is quite hard to get ride of it.
About becoming vegetarian or not taking the bus, for the person who chose that option, it may seem easier for them to do that than reducing their use of technological appliances. And even if this choices can be criticize, it's still better to do that than do nothing.

  22. Hi everyone!

I personaly think it’s a big mistake to expect people to be perfect when it comes to completely change our way of living while also combining with the society's expectations. To be clearer, if someone decides to become vegetarian because of philosophical beliefs, then it is a bigger step than close to 95% of the worldwide population in the fight against climate change. Of course, I agree that those instruments participate to the impact on the Earth and that we could reduce our consumption or by using some apps like "Ecosia" (a variant of Google engaged in the reforestation), buying second-hand phones and deleting our e-mails regularly for instance. But I’m against the fact that certain actions are being devalued by other actions that run counter to the first one.
On the other hand, technological appliances are our way of communication, of work so cutting them drastically isn’t as easy as walking and not taking the bus, especially when it also generates positive outer-effects (spreading awareness etc...).
To conclude with, I'm not willing to stop using my phone completely, though probably to reduce the amount of time spent on it. But beside their is so many ways to reduce our ecological footprint that I don't have remorse about it because it’s better to do something even small than nothing at all.

  23. Even if I would reduce my using of this instruments, I think that this is a really hard thing to do, because everybody use it, and even for school, it could be hard, because we often need them to do research, and work on some documents. I think that on the one hand, the development of new technologies can allow people to do a lot of things, and even for medicine.
But on the other hand, I think that it had been a really bad thing, because some scientific research have shown that nowadays, kids are dependent on those tools, because they use it too much, and for bad things, which in addition decrease intellectual skills.
Furthermore, it can reduce eyesight, and when people listen music too loud, they may become deaf.
I think that it could be the same for social medias. It has good and really bad parts.
Finally, I agree with you, Aurelien, when you say: "Some people are willing to reduce their meat consumption or to avoid taking the plane to travel in order to reduce their impact on the Earth, but they don't reduce the amount of technology they're using". For myself, I am already vegetarian, so I stopped my consumption of meat and fish to participate partially in the reduction of greenhouse gases.

  24. First of all, hello.
In my opinion, digital technology is a really useful progress which took a lot of time to develop. So reducing our use is a good thing but I don’t think it will be ever possible to totally stop using it. Actually it’s the matter of all of us to reduce their data, but as a society who expands thanks to technology, I think reducing meat consumption is something to achieve before anything else. Nobody really benefits from meat industry, it’s more a kind of “pleasure” while technology industry helps us for scientific discoveries for example.
So that’s why, I would be willing to stick to minimal use of technology devices and would encourage everybody to do so, but I think there is other priorities and other problems to solve before.
