Is beauty only skin-deep?

  1. Hello,

In today’s society, beauty is a form of social and physical pressure that affects mainly women but also men. Beauty has become something that is no longer personal according to society. A woman must answer criteria to be considered beautiful and this phenomenon brings several consequences such as being introverted or ashamed of her body which shouldn’t be the case at all. We have to learn to love our body but it becomes difficult because of the media, the cinema but also social networks where only one type of woman must exist, there is an ideal of the fine woman with an important breast.
In another era, the type wasn’t at all like now where the woman had to be strong to be beautiful but even there a woman must be defying stereotypes. So yes because of these prejudices, the beauty has become superficial where only the physical aspect counts and no longer the person. We can do the same analyze with nature where we’re locked up for most of the population in the city, where nature becomes something non-existent.
So unfortunately, the beauty has only become skin-deep.

  2. Hello everyone,

I think that beauty is subjective because each person have his beauty criteria. But moreover beauty criteria are more directed by the society. And is imposed for women which must be skin with shapes, do not have acne... If you respect this beauty criteria you are accepted by the society and social networks, you can also be part of social group. Some are overwhelmed and live very badly the social pressure on beauty. This beauty criticism blind people because they don’t see the inner beauty, people’s character because they are too interested and by exterior beauty. I think for a lot of people the visual impression is very important but it’s not normal .

  3. Beauty depends on different personalities, experiences and opinions. People can be beautiful physically and in their mind. It also depends on their behaviors. At birth everybody is pure and nice, and then that are the experiences which develop the personality. To my opinion, a beautiful person is someone tolerant, confident, helpful and optimist. Moreover, beauty is something superficial. I mean that these TV shows such as Miss France or Miss Universe create an image of the perfection in little girls’ minds which does not show the truth. More importantly, beauty does not stop as a skinny body, a perfect skin, a brightly smile or long hair. For instance, Miss Universe 2020 is a black woman with short hair. She comes from South Africa and her message to the world is that she wants every black children to be proud of their color and that even if people are different, this is what makes the world beautiful and so unique. A diversification of the image of a Miss is interesting but it has taken a long time to let black women represent the most beautiful woman of the world. Indeed these candidates correspond to the standards of beauty which the society create. Have you ever seen women too fat, with acne, with cellulite, or a bit too small, participated to these show? I don’t think so. Because they do not fulfil the criteria of what the “perfection” is. However, this year, the project “Miss Germany 2020” is to present candidates who are really different from each other and they all have their own particularities: some of them have tattoos, are bald, or have roundness of the body. They are still very beautiful even if they don’t illustrate what the society wants them to look like. I find this project significant to change the actual mentalities on what beauty is.

  5. Hello,

First of all , beauty is a very subjective notion because it depends of people's preference and requierements.
Appearance is a notion which involve senses like vision but appearance is sometimes misleading and we can't base our opinion on the first sight.
Because there is a fact that beauty can be inner and this fact can't be influence by the society like the appearance.
In fact , society has a big influence on our preference for instance a girl has to be skinny.
In addition, when we get to know someone usually we discovered the personality and it can be greater than the appearance in fact the first thought it's very important because it will affect your judgement , the 5 first second counts a lot because if the person seems gently you will want to know the person and vice versa.
For instance, the love at first sight can be assimilated to the notion of skin-deep because if the appearance is misleading the love at first sight can't exist.
To conclude,we have the plastic surgery that can change our appearance for the anecdote the golden number (1.618) is a tool for some plastic surgeon to make a person “perfectly proportional”.

  6. Hello,
To begin with, beauty is not only skin-deep. Of course the appearance is the first thing you see in others but beauty is very subjective. In fact, you may think someone is pretty when your friend may think the opposite and your opinion about one's appearance may influence your judgment about them. Unfortunately i think that the society's beauty standards creates a lot of shame and lack of confidence for people. For instance most women are expected to be thin, European looking or hairless to be pretty and criterias also exists for men. On top of that, if one is mean, cruel etc that inner "ugliness" can completely ruins the outer beauty as well as someone that may not be seen as pretty can have a beautiful soul. That's why i believe beauty is not only skin-deep.

  8. Hello,
In my opinion, when we think of beauty we directly ponder the appareance of somebody and if one is fitting into those restrive "beauty standards" found in publicities, on social medias etc...
This is why we often say that beauty is only skin-deep because it's not reliable in the sense that beauty standards are constantly evolving over the decades. For instance, for the most part in the 50's women's shapes were desired such as Marilyn Monroe, when on the contrary extreme thinness was really put forward by fashion magazines and on the catwalks with icons like Kate Moss, and whereas
nowadays standards are widening and taking into account the large diversity of bodies, let's think about the movement of "body positivism", and that of course also applies to men. But we have to think further, because we cannot only rely on the figure of someone and call ourself "ugly" if we do not fit in, it'd be ridiculous. Then, beauty becomes not only a superficial matter but a somewhat inner one. It is true to say that some people spread an attractive energy which we call "charisma", so it is also true that beauty depends on someone's values and behaviour, a nice personnality and soul could make someone beautiful. That's why i believe beauty is not only skin-deep.

  9. First of all, what is beauty? I think that there is not only one definition of beauty, because each one can have their own definition of beauty. Beauty is something personal and abstract. Sometimes, people think that something is beautiful, only because others told them that it was; for example, with fashion, by dint of always seeing something, even if you don't like it, you will start to appreciate it.
Of course, beauty criteria may exist, but everyone can interpret them in their own way. Moreover, I think that we'll always be less beautiful than someone, but it doesn't mean that we are ugly.
Besides, beauty is not eternal, because we'll all age one day and be less beautiful. So, yes, I think that beauty could be skin-deep, but not only, because someone or something could be beautiful naturally. In addition, I think that beauty is not only a physical trait, but also something intellectual. For example, if we are thinking that someone is beautiful, and that his character is bad, we'll be thinking of her/his as less beautiful.

  10. Hello everyone,

First of all when one says that beauty is only skin-deep it means that a person's character is more important than how they look. Furthermore there are several types of beauties, physical beauty which is subjective since everyone doesn't considerate the same people as being beautiful. Moreover there is intellectual beauty, which in my opinion is the most important one of all, our inner beauty is shown by our kindness towards others and our understanding of them. When someone is mean or unpleasant to someone, their inner self, the "real" them is showed and it makes them look less beautiful to the eyes of others. To conclude someone can be extremely beautiful physically but really mean and unpleasant and that will lead them to be seen as ugly simply because inner beauty is much stronger than physical beauty. That's why in my opinion I consider beauty as being only skin-deep.

  11. Hello,

There's so much more than physical. There are so many people that suffer from things that affect outside appearance. Does this make them ugly? No. How a person acts can really change the opinion if someone is beautiful. Yes when you walk past someone you will determine how you feel about them, but does your opinion really matter because you don't know them. People say old people are beautiful, but they are also wrinkly and dainty, so does that make them ugly? No, because there is so much more than the outside.Something beautiful for someone isn't beautiful for an other. Unfortunately people who are known as the "prettiest" or "most popular" is determined by society and when you look at those people they can be rude, or mean. But they can also be the nicest people you'll meet. But if you compared someone who is "gorgeous" verses someone who is "ugly" then yes beauty is only skin deep. People never wonder if that girl/guy is nice or caring they first look at their apperence and judge them before they talk to them.
To conclude I would say that nowadays, beauty is skin deep in the society but it shouldn’t because beauty is inside, outside and subjective.

Thank you for reading and goodbye.

  12. hi,
I think in the first place that beauty isn't skin-deep because I think that humans are made in a way to fall in love with someone they find attractive. But we can see at all times that people get married out of interest. So I think that beauty isn't skin-deep when you're really in love with a person because I think that you can't be in love with somebody and don't find this person attractive but in the other hand beauty can be skin-deep when you're someone who wants to take advantage of somebody.

  13. Hello !

Beauty is something subjective. Indeed, one person can find someone beautiful while another will think the opposite.
Then, beauty depends on the time. Beauty corresponds to standards which evolve according to the time, in fact nowadays beauty is to be fin and tall but in the middle age it was the opposite . And it is also according to the people, each person has a different look on someone that is why, as I said earlier, you can find someone beautiful but your friend will not .
Finally, beauty is multiple, not unique. Beauty is everywhere, each person can be beautiful, have something special that makes them beautiful. This is why I think beauty is not only skin-deep.

  14. Hello,
Very often, in our current society, we judge the beauty of people without trying to know them as they really are inside. Indeed, beauty is a great helper in reaching the power but not the main quality. The main quality that is necessary for someone's wish having further relations or affairs with you is having abilities to make good first impression, to show all your best and to hide your disadvantages that both beautiful and ugly people have. It all depends on human. Something beautiful to one person isn't beautiful to the next. People who are known as the "prettiest" or "most popular" is determined by society. Don't judge before you get to know them.

  15. Hello
Beauty depends on several criteria and I think most f them are really subjective and vary according to people and their taste which also evolve during their life. The distinction between what is beautiful and what is not varies according to the times.
I don't think that beauty is skin-deep because considering someone as beautiful doesn't only depend on how they look like.

  16. Hello everyone,
At first sight, people might find a person attractive due to their physical attributes.
Besides, our society constantly shows us what is supposed to be physical perfection and so what we should look like and be attracted to. Yet, even beauty standards keep changing in our society, which shows just how stupid it is to blindly follow those rules… Anyway, I am not saying that you should not search for the “ideal appearance” of models on magazine covers. However, what you should definitely not do is judge someone’s attractiveness because it truly depends one several parameters. If you find someone ugly or not attractive (well firstly don’t say it out loud) you should know that someone on earth does think she/he is the most attractive person. Beauty is so relative to each one of us, and I am glad of that, imagine if we were all attracted to the same profile… To conclude, beauty is a very subjective notion that needs to be blended with personality, intelligence and charm. We are beautiful believe me 

  17. Hello,
To begin with, beauty isn't only skin-deep for me. Today people judge a lot by physical appearance and don't seek to know inner beauty. However, what makes a person unique is not only their outward beauty but their character, for example. Indeed, a person can be beautiful for someone and ugly for someone else. Everything is a matter of taste. Finally, I think that beauty is superficial in people's minds and that you have to go beyond that because nobody is perfect and each one has his own personality.

  18. Hello,
For me beauty is something that we can't define because everyone has his own opinion about it. Someone can find something or someone beautiful but another one could not share his opinion. Beauty lies in everything, it is not just physical. It can lie in the way we act, talk, behave. Besides, an amazing personality can bring much more beauty to someone than having a handsome physic but an awful personality. To sum up, beauty isn't in ourselves but in the sight of people looking at us. Everyone has his own beauty.

  19. Hello,
First of all, beauty is on the eyes of the one who is looking at it, that means beauty is based on a subjective opinion and everyone can be beautiful for someone as everyone can be ugly for someone. However, nowadays, the notion of beauty is made popular by social media, magazines and television according to some criteria defined by the current fashion. Otherwise, fashion is ephemeral and beauty's criteria change from time to time. In our society we sometimes only concentrate on the skin-deep beauty especially for the women, as if the beauty of a person only depends on how she looks, thereby some people talk about beauty privilege. Nevertheless I don't think beauty is only skin-deep because beauty has two sides, one that we can see directly, and one that we dicover by getting to know the person.

  20. Hello,
I think beauty is everywhere in someone, you can be beautiful in your own way, not necessarily physically or mentally or emotionally , in the way you dress or anything and of course these things can contribute to your beauty. Truth be told, to me beauty is obviously a bit physical and I admit it but I think it is mostly in the way people treat other people. I hate selfish, arrogant, disrespectful or hypocrite people and those traits make people uglier than they are to me. So I believe beauty is anywhere you want it to be wether in people or in yourself.
