  1. I have never read "The Boleyn Inheritance". But reading the summary of this book on Internet, it seems to me very interesting. Personally, I like to read some books on the Middle Ages or the Renaissance. Especially those were there is adventure and a love affair with. For this reason, I think this book would please me; it remains for me to read it to see if it is good.

  2. Which skills Philippa Gregory used to make her book interesting and intriguing ?

    I) The novel is realistic because it was was inspired by historical facts, the characters are real.

It can be seen that the main characters were existed un real life. For example Anne of Cleves was the 4th wife of Henry VIII of England she was born on September the 22th 1515 at Düsseldorf in Germany and she died the 16th july 1557. Henry VIII is also a main character of the book, he was the king of England and Ireland, he was born the 28th june 1491 and died the 28 january 1547. And Thomas Howard who was a politician during the reign of Henri VIII he was born the 10th march 1473 and died the 25 august 1554. Thanks to Gregory’s research in royal family she made her novel more interesting because the book is based on real facts.

II) The author allows each character to tell her side of the story in her own words.

The first voice we hear belongs to 30-year-old Jane Boleyn. Jane's husband George was implicated in his sister's (Anne) alleged infidelities and went with her to the scaffold in 1533, his calculating wife moved to save her inheritance rather than her husband and six years later is still scheming. Next point of view was Anne of Cleves, soon to be Queen Number Four, a provincial, German-speaking Protestant princess chosen by Henry's advisor, Thomas Cromwell. The third voice belongs to Katherine Howard, a pretty, 15-year-old cousin of the dead Anne Boleyn and an incorrigible flirt who is brought to court as a lady-in-waiting by her conniving, powerful uncle, the Duke of Norfolk (Thomas Howard). While reading we can be surprised by the slow changing of the points of view, we can feel firstly Jane’s experience, naivete and sensibility of Anne and vainglory and cupidity of Kitty (Katherine Howard).

III) Gregory used historical knowledge and novelistic skills

Gregory's accounts of events are accurate enough to be persuasive and her characterizations modern enough to be convincing. Rich in intrigue and irony, as readers we can quickly understand who was divorced, beheaded or survived. Moreover Gregory’s sharp and pointed style bring something special to the novel and make novel intriguing to read. This modernity felt in Gregory’s writing is what made the novel so special and historic fact more accessible for young readers. I can also add a little anecdote about the author, she obtained B grade in English and only E in History when she sat A-Level exam, but it didn't stop her to write and historical novel, she is very brave and this little story can be a lesson pour students i mean it doesn't matter the grades your took at a test the most important thing is to do what you want to do and do what you believe !

  3. WHO IS PHILIPPA GREGORY ?

    SOME FACTS ABOUT HER :

Philippa Gregory was born on 9 January 1954 in Nairobi, Kenya.
When she was two years old, her family moved to Bristol, England.
She was known as a "rebel" at Colston's Girls' School, She then went to journalism college in Cardiff and spent a year as an apprentice with the Portsmouth News before she managed to gain a place on an English literature degree course at the University of Sussex, where she switched to a history course.
She worked in BBC radio for two years before attending the University of Edinburgh, where she earned her doctorate in 18th-century literature. Gregory has taught at the University of Durham, University of Teesside, and the Open University, and was made a Fellow of Kingston University in 1994.

    SOME OF HER WORKS :

She has written novels set in several different historical periods, though primarily the Tudor period and the 16th century. Reading a number of novels set in the 17th century led her to write the best-selling Lacey trilogy – Wideacre, which is a story about the love of land and incest, The Favoured Child and Meridon. This was followed by The Wise Woman.
Some of her novels have won awards and have been adapted into television dramas. The most successful of her novels has been The Other Boleyn Girl, published in 2002 was adapted for BBC television in 2003
Gregory has also published The Boleyn Inheritance and a series of books about the Plantagenets, the ruling houses that preceded the Tudors, and the Wars of the Roses (the wars of the Roses were a series of dynastic wars for the throne of England).

ONE OF PHILIP GREGORY’S QUOTE : « I would never lie to anyone about History »

This quote proves that Philippa Gregory is an author who takes History very seriously when it comes to writing a book, she claims that her 'commitment to historical accuracy' is a hallmark of her writing.
Respected for her knowledge of the Tudor period of British History as well as her background study of 18th century British literature, Gregory is often called on as a consultant for local British television broadcasts.
Nevertheless some historians dispute Philippas Gregory’s claim, explaining that people shouldn’t take a fictional book as seriously as a real History book.

So, what do I think about Philippa Gregory's book, "The Boleyn inheritance"?

Well, first of all I have to say that before reading it, when our teacher asked us to buy it, I had some apprehensions. Indeed, even when I received it and therefore when I read the summary, I thought it would be boring, because I don't usually like historical books and "The Boleyn Inheritance" is cleary one.

Besides, I learned that the story of Henry VIII was a true story, and since I knew little about the king, I really thought I would be lost while reading the book.
However, I started it, and by Gregory's writing, I soon entered the story and imagined the characters well and their personalities. I liked Jane, and I felt sympathy for this character, as for Anne, which I liked a lot too, and which, through the pages, was just looking for love, a simple thing that she never fully received.
Little by little, I was definitely in the story and I wanted to know what had happened to Anne, after repulsing the king, or what happened to Katherine, a selfish character which I really don't like, when she cheated on her husband the king.

The prejudice and the false idea I had about this book, totally changed and I can now say that historic books aren't all boring, and only focused on history, but that there are real stories, characters which we can identity to, or not, and there is a of course plot which, once we get into it, we need to know the end.
"The boleyn inheritance" is therefore a book which I liked, and most of all which made me discover the historic book, and made me learn much more on Henry VIII and on life at court, at the time.

  6. The year is 1539 and the court of Henry VIII is increasingly fearful of the moods of the ageing sinck king. With only a baby in the cradle for an heir, Henry has to take another wife and the dangerous prize of the crown of England is won by Anne of Cleves.

  7. Philippa Gregory is a famous Anglo-saxon writer who wrote many books which tell the stories of well-known historical figures or narrate specific periods of time. Here, we are studying one of her most recent books : The Boleyn inheritance, published in 2006.

I had to read this novel for our English Literature class and I found it rather long but quite intriguing and interesting. Indeed, Philippa Gregory manages to make this story very suspensful, as we, throughout the whole story, are trying to predict how the story's going to end and if the new queen is going to have the same fate as her predecessors. As for the characters, the three main ones, Jane Boleyn, Anne of Cleves and Katherine Howard, they are really different from one another and have different characteristics in the novel : we get to follow Anne's initiatory voyage through England and within her own mind ; we get to know Jane's will to put on the queen's throne someone that would serve her and her bloodline's interests and we can witness Katherine's rise of the social latter to finally become queen. Although these three paths are equally as captivating, I personnally preferred to follow Anne of Cleves, her discovery of English customs and culture, her learning of English language and her relationship with her brand new spouse, the King of England Henry VIII.

To conclude, The Boleyn inheritance was a good read for me and I was quite hooked by the plot of this novel. There are many aspects of the book that we can study in class, especially the links and relationships between several characters. In the narrative we can find many themes that we have to deal with this year such as Love, encounter and friendship or Initiatory voyage.

  8. Philippa Gregory was born 9 january 1954 in Nairobi in Kenya. She is an English historical novelist who has been writing since 1987. The best known of her works is The Other Boleyn Girl (2001), which in 2002 won the Romantic Novel of the Year Awardfrom the Romantic Novelists Associaation and has been adapted into two separate films.

I have never read "The Boleyn Inheritance" by Philippa Gregory, it was first published in 2006 and it's a direct sequel to her previous novel The Other Boleyn Girl, but having read the summary, the author tempted me to read it because I like the stories which take place in the sixteenth century. It covers a period from 1539 until 1542 and chronicles the fourth and fifth marriages of King Henry VIII of England. It remind me the very symbolic serie of these last years : Game of thrones.
It countered pounding because it begins in 1539, after the death of King Henry VIII's third wife,Jane Seymour. Henry is looking for a new wife and chooses Anne of Cleves, daughter of John III, Duke of Cleves, whom he has only seen from portraits sent to him.
