Incident

Several days ago, Michel Zecler, a famous rap artist, was beaten up by several police officers in front of his studio in Paris for no reason, apart from his skin color, black.
Have you heard of it? What do you think?

  1. Hello,
I don't have heard of it but I think that is unfair. Indeed, the rap artist was beatun up by police officers just because he was black. Police officers abused their power because they were racist. To my mind, it is not normal that racism still exists in 2020.

  2. Hello,
I have heard that on the radio and I have seen on TV the video of the surveillance camera, which was in the local where Michel Zecler was beaten. So, I was very shocked by the violence of these police officers. I don't understand what they think in their head, to do that. It's shameful, I hope that they are ashamed of them.
Moreover, it's very humiliating and degrading for the police profession (whose the exercise was already criticized and which was already perceived like racist...).I think it's a beautiful job, and I don't understand why these men had, until this drama, a place in the police force.

  3. Michel Zegler didn't deserved that. Fortunately most of the police officers were arrested because of what they did. From my point of view,it's so unfair and no one should live what he came threw. Where is the law ? Not only for him, but for all the black people who were attacked just because of their skin color. Honestly, I don't want that our country becomes United States.2, where black people are unfairly persecuted.

  4. Yes I have heard of it on many platforms including twitter, instagram and Facebook. I think that it is of course unacceptable to be beaten up because of your skin colour. I am sad to see that after centuries of discrimination some people are still stuck with this mindset that blacks are inferior. Even if shocked and disturbed, I am not surprised this has happened. Discrimination and violence have always found their way around with cops, only there was never concrete proof. So even if I am sorry for Michel Zecler, I am glad this video came out to denounce police brutality.
I think with the force of social media , we are getting closer to what we are looking for. Social media can help us stand against injustices by informing us quicker than ever done before, and stick together even if we are miles away from each other. Especially this year, following the black lives matter movement and the murder of many like George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, new pillars and standards were emanated, making clear once and for all what is ok and what is not.

Something else I'd like to abord is the fact that this news hasn’t shocked the world. I don’t know wether it is because France isn’t as much of an activist’s country as America or wether The USA is always the center of attention. Either way, I find myself in conflict with the idea of standing for the US when they have racial issues but not standing for France when we encounter the same problems.
I feel like when there started to be protests in the United states, everybody in Europe decided to protest too, but now that we are encountering the same problem in France, no one is talking all that much about it or deciding to take action. It seems like we always wait for the USA to make a decision to then follow it. The same thing happened in the 60’s with feminism. It was birthed in the US and came to Europe as a product of America's influence.
Why talk about the US election as much as we did and not talk about actual world issues? Why is our culture and attention focused upon America? It makes me so upset that we put America’s needs before ours or other countries which actually need help and attention. I don’t hear anyone talking about protesting for Uyghurs in China, Palestinians in Israel or Kashmiris but I’ve heard all about Trump and Biden's debate.
To be clear: I am not against standing with America for racial issues that also happen here, but I am sick of having a nation that cares more about the US than their own country. And I find It disrespectful that we stand more for America’s rights and instead of France’s. In order to make progress as a country we also need to take initiations and react when something like what happened to Michel Zecler happens.

  5. Hello,

yes I heard about this attack of white policemen against a black artist in his own studio. I saw a lot of reacts of people on social networks who share the video. I was shocked by the violence of the policemen against a single man. This situation show very well the actual problem of racism. I think that the racism doesn't concern the police in general, but some peoples, we dont have to put in the same basket all the policemen.

  6. Hi, I didn’t heard anything about this attack against this rap artist but after some research about it, and after have seen the video of his agresion (who was very shocking) I would say that to me police man have to be neutral and can’t act like that . This act can be interpreted like a rascism act because of their persecution again the rap artist. To conclude such acts can’t be normalized because of their severity.

  7. Hello,
Indeed, I learned about this story on social networks, especially on Twitter. I was shocked by these images because I could see a black man, Michel Zecler, being beaten up by several policemen. Like many people I think, it reminded me of the story of George Floyd, which happened in the United States a few months ago. So, I find that this video comes at a particular time, especially during a period of health crisis, but also at a time when the French government wants to pass a law in order to control the images of police officers and thus protect them. However, the police officers are not racist, but some of them are and abuse their statues on people, especially black people. Finally, I think that in our time there should be no more such acts, especially in a democracy like France.

  8. Hello, Yes I have heard and seen the videos of the attack. I think these policemen should be arrested and put in jail because for me this act of violence is just racism. I am against all forms of racism and I don't understand how you can attack someone just because of the colour of their skin. These policemen are a disgrace to their profession and to the whole of France. They deny the facts when there are videos to support them, which makes their case even worse. If we can no longer trust the police our society is in great danger.

  9. I personnally heard about this story mainly beacause of the video provided by the CCTV footage showing Michel Zecler being kicked and punched for several minutes by three officers at his Paris studio which is something that is sadly hard to forget but also the many celebrities that condemned this event. On top of that he says himself that he was racially abused during the attack which makes it even more shocking beacuse it shows that he might have been attacked for no reason apart from his skin colour. With all that it might I would say that this event is shocking but it hasn't been spoken too much of when you compare with similar events in the US but it allowed people to stand together against racism in some way. However, this event also had negative consequences given that it started hate against policemen in general when most do their job honorably, protecting others.

  10. I personally hadn't heard of it as I'm not a really avid fan of rap. However, I think that this was an outrageous act on the police's part. Racism has always been a huge problem in our society, and it is even more horrible when the police, people who are supposedly here to protect us, do the contrary and instead make people of color feel in danger. The worst part about these kinds of incidents is that the police officers responsible for this are rarely charged, or at worst, get a slap on the wrist. These police officers do it because they know that most of the time they won't suffer the consequences.

  11. Hi! Personally, I think this is an act of racism not of civism. Police officers have to protect citizens from dangers and threats. But nowadays, we already saw so much acts of violence from those who are meant to be: the defenders of the nation. I think the question is : Aren't they supposed to fight against our enemies instead of us? Moreover some of police men arrest and being violent to citizens because of the skin color, ethnicity, orientation sexual and others reasons. But the fact is they have to be more tolerance because from the beginning we should have all the same rights and liberty. But it's not true, there is too much discrimination still today. But sirs, a person does not choose his skin color, his orientation sexual, his ethnicity, but in fact he is born with. So blame someone because of these reasons is unjustified and unfair. On top of that, those assaults against population don't make you the heroes of the nation but the shame and fear of it.
Always thank you for reading my thoughts! Bye

  12. I heard about this story and I was really shocked. I think it is very sad and cowardly of the police to use their status and to lie to attack people for no reason, especially because of racism here.

  13. I heard about it and in my opinion beating someone because of their skin color is a huge outrance and it is because of this kind of news that many people are suspicious of the police.
