Society

What is the downside of the society that you would like to change and why?

  1. Hello,
I would to change the consumer society. Indeed, it leads to excessive consumption and makes people lose their sense of priorities. For instance, some people buy a new phone when they don't have enough to eat.
Moreover, the consumer society has negative consequences for the environment such as pollution.

  2. I think that the bigger downside of the society that I would like to change is judgment . Indeed, whatever you do , you are judged. When you put naked clothes people say that your parents didn't educate you well and when you put covered clothes , people say that
you 're stuck and that's a sad reality . Furthermore , another downside of the society that I would like to change is the lack of tolerance towards other people .Indeed, last years we have been witnesses of situations in which we demonstrate the loss of tolerance in our society. In minimal daily activities, like driving, we see people yelling at each other, insulting and in many cases, using violence to resolve their disagreements.Accepting the other to be someone else, to think differently and to manifest in a different way is, nowadays , a difficult task in the society. To conclude, these examples show why I would like to change this two notions in society(judgment and lack of tolerance).Indeed, it affects our personal freedom because people don't let you live as you want to and therefore you lose your personal trust and you change your identity in order to be like society would like you to be .

  3. Nowadays, our society has become very commercial and less and less focused on citizen's life : I think it's this downside that I would like to change.
Effectively, it's very worrying for me to see that we can be (or we are) victims of consumer society, without knowing it.
In geography, I learned the expression "cultural standardisation". It is a phenomenon that has developed the last decades and that shows the importance of consumer society, which denies the real citizen's needs. For instance, in a lot of countries and cities, there is the same shops. It's very annoying: when I visit a city, I would like to see authentic shops and places that recall the city's spirit but this isn't what I see : shops recall me what I already know very well (Zara, H&M, Ikea...). So, more and more old and authentic shops are replaced by large shops that are everywhere, while theses old shops could have been helped. It's not fair.
This is an example of cultural standardisation, and I would like to change it.

  4. Hello,
I think the negative thing about society is that it dictates too much about how we should behave.
Indeed, since we are children, our family and our educational system tell us how to act, what we should or should not do, how we should treat others, etc. In the end, we learn a whole series of norms in order to be able to behave in the world. For example, boys are told not to cry in public, not to show their emotions too much, or girls are told to be calm and kind to others.
In short, we learn a whole series of norms in order to be able to relate properly to others and be accepted by society.
And if we don't follow them, we will be judged and not accepted. It's as simple as that. So, we repress certain emotions in public, we control our feelings...we internalise all this to follow the model of a person who has the capacity to be accepted.

  5. Hello,
I think that the disadvantage that I will change will be intolerance of differance because it is something very present in our society unfortunately. Some people do not accept that people do not do as the majority or as they have decided and this can result in judgment or something more serious like harassment.

  6. There are several downsides of society that I would like to change. First of all, the fact that it has now become normal for the media to deliver false information because it drives clicks at a time where those clicks are desperately needed. Many journalists want to do solid reporting, but incentives drive them to spin information because they don’t have the viewership they would want. In the past, the news and media didn’t have to go to such extreme lengths to get attention. They don’t always flat-out lie, even though they sometimes do, but they choose what to highlight. That’s why I think we should change this aspect of our society.
Finally, another aspect of today’s society that I would like to change is that people now abuse of internet anonymity and can anonymously say horrible things and never have to see the results of their mean-spirited words. This has lead phenomenons such as cyber bullying or body shaming to become more common and it is obviously a bad thing.

  7. Nowadays, there are many downsides in our society: (environmental damage, inequality, slander, etc.)
If I had to choose as a priority, the most important thing I would like to change is to stop the violence done to animals; whether it is in housing, slaughterhouses or circuses. Animals are living beings and deserve to be respected and treated well.
The second point I would like to highlight is overconsumption. Indeed, over the past few years , shopping habits has evolved. We often buy more than we need. There are various forms of protest against consumerism and its harmul effect on the planet.
-Paying attention to the origin of the product
    -buying second-hand
    -recycle items
    -adopt a minimalist mindset

  9. I would like to change the way women are only judged by their looks. Media, the fashion industry and even big cultural industries (Hollywood , the music industry) show on a positive light only a certain type of women and so a lot of them don't feel represented.
It also leads to a lot of others problems such as discrimination against women.

  10. Society is all about living as a community, united. However, it often isn't the case and people are more or less included or excluded into our society. In our society, the majority will always win. Minorities are always overpowered by the majority and struggle to find their voices in our society.
They are often discriminated against and end up being ignored in the end. LGBT people have for instance been persecuted for a long time and it now only as of recently that people have begun to accept them. I think that it would be for the better if people could just accept everybody for who they are. Having said that, I do realise that it is not that simple.

On another note, in our society, people are expected to respect the norms that have been put into place. They need to behave accordingly and conform. People are not completely free and always have to abide by society's unspoken rules. It isn't rare to see someone choose to conform to society, instead of chasing their personal desires. To my mind, it wouldn't be too bad if we could be a bit more free.

Finally, I would also like to change how wealth is distributed in our society. While most people live modestly with an average amount of money, there are those who have an immense fortune and those who live in extreme poverty. These people hoarding money profit off of normal citizens and the have-nots and only keep getting richer. For example during the COVID-19, many wealthy people became even wealthier by taking advantage of the situation while other people lost their jobs and money.

  11. Everything. Absolutely everything. For a company that is supposed to represent us, to reassure us and to give us confidence, I think there is still a long way to go. When people can finally live the way they want to without being insulted, beaten or raped for their skin colour, gender, sexual orientation, religion, physical appearance, health and so on, then I can say that this society is right and that I feel good. At the moment, all it manages to do is increase my anxiety.

  12. Hello !
In my opinion there are way too many things to change in our society. It seems like it got better with our generation (i’m referring to gen Z). I see a lot of people being more tolerant and abide but I doubt it is enough since our society is not perfect yet.
There are a lot of issues such as:
    -racism
    -homophobia
    -transphobia
    -spread of misinformation
    -bullying
    -judgementalism
    ....
There are a lot more but these are the first that came to my mind. I’d like to change all of that because I feel like people cannot live freely, loads of them have to hide their real selves, flee chaotic family, make sure they are safe because they might get beaten up because of their beliefs, skin color, or sexual orientation...
Fortunately, thanks to movements, our society is on the right track but it will never please everyone.

  13. If I had to change one thing in our society it would be intolerance towards others. Indeed I find that people in general lack tolerance towards each other. Whether it's about skin colour, origins, sexual orientation or political choices, people always find something to complain about. I think this is a pity because it can exclude people and create tensions between people. Human beings are made to live in society, so we must learn to respect others and accept them and their differences.

  14. To my way of thinking, I would change hypocrisy of people towards self-confidence.Indeed, people are told to be self-confident, to be proud of us but when someone has accomplished something and that he or she is proud of it, he or she becomes subject of criticisms and this is contradictory.

  15. The downside of the society that I would like to change would be the tolerance towards all religions in the world. In some countries, (even if the country is a secular country) we can feel tensions with some religions which are nowadays not respected by all people. For example, in France, Muslims are victims of Islamophobia, Uyghurs (a majority of Muslims) are victims of persecution in China, and Christians in the East. I would like this to change because I want to live in a peaceful world where people can practice their religion as they wish and there is less or more persecution.

  16. In my opinion we should stop the hypersexualization that is unfortunately very present in today's society, especially since the phenomenon is amplified with social networks such as TikTok since it leads to abuses such as normalization, malicious people who will exploit the most manipulable people to their advantage etc.

  17. Hello everyone ! For me, I notice this and I want the society improve that. Many people try to dissimulate their own true personality to others. That’s because whether it’s the fear of being judged or being different and not being approved. It’s crazy to think how much the society has forged and pressured our inner self. Be like everyone else, “look at your friend” were saying your parents “Look how successful he is right now, and look at you…”
Generally, people tend to judge through outward appearance because it is supposed to be a”reflection” of the one’s self. Similar to “you are what you eat”. Here, we have “you are how you dress”. Even if you have something in your brain, people tend to give more credit to the one who is well dressed, less cell brain cell rather than the big brain, badly dressed.
I am not generalizing, it’s just a statement from my perspective.
    Thank you always!

  18. Good evening, I think society is both a wonderful and horrendous concept.
There are so many downsides to it that a 10 000 word essay would not be enough to express my views on it. I love being able to rely on others as much as I hate it.
Indeed ever since all countries cooperate together, it has been much easier to live.
We do not have to grow our own food so we are more likely to live longer as we use our bodies way less. We have everything accessible to us, we are hungry? We can order food. We are bored? we can watch a movie, read a book, hang out with friends….. the list goes on.
Ever since our world has entered its phase of globalisation everything has been so much more accessible. What a Utopia like society! But not really, this leads to a lot of corruption and for most times we are not even aware of it. But when we are, there is nothing we can do about it since we all depend on a country. We cannot go to war with one for it will bring more issues. We are all intertwined in a big net that makes it impossible for us to disagree with each other. It's like a game of pick up sticks. Every move you make, no matter how subtle, can lead to a big problem. The problem in society is that we make a lot of compromises that in the end do not serve us well. What we take for ourselves we take away from others. The mere action of eating fish once a week or buying a new pair of nike feeds that industry that as we all know by now works for their interest only.
Since a while now, we do not only buy the product but we are the product. We are the reason these industries work so well.
We think life is so much easier now, but that's only because we have once again created a bigger gap between us and the people working for us. An example is the food we eat. It is all cheap and very accessible. But how come? Because people are literally enslaved to work for us yet we are not aware of it.
The sugar industry ruins its workers' bodies and future. People are forced to work In these factories because they are ripped off in some way that they owe their life to a company, or even worse they cannot seek a better life, for this is all they know.
We could also talk about the avocado wars going on in Mexico.
All of this suffering is caused for us to buy a macdonald and throw it away because we don’t like it. We are spoiled but we think its normal.
This is what I hate; everything seems to be easy but in reality it doesn’t come without consequences. We are not aware of it because the government decides to turn a blind eye on it. This is what I hate about society: we cannot trust each other because we are too big. We cannot control everything.
It is almost impossible to live ethically in our world today and I think this is the biggest downside of it all.
