Free contraception for women

Last Thursday, Olivier Véran announced that contraception for women under 25 would become free from 2022. What do you think about it ?

  1. Hi,
In France, in 2018, the abortion rate for the women, between 20 and 24 years old was 27 per 1000 and was much higher than in other age group. Among these young women, some of them couldn’t have access to contraception lack of financial means. That’s why I want to say: “At last!”
Actually, contraception would be free and opened for everyone. This decision would contribute to promote equity between men and women despite their incomes and lifestyles.

  2. Hello, in my opinion it is a good thing that female contraception is a matter that is getting attention because it is legitimate to every women and it's outrageous that they can't protect themselves, can't have contraception if they choose to just because they can't afford it. Moreover, I believe women should be able to do whatever they decide is best for them and not let money be an influence in their decision. However, I think they should extend the age decided on, to over 25 as even if generally it is an age that comes with more financial autonomy and income, it isn't always the case for every one.

  3. Good afternoon,
First of all before this new measure contraception was reimbursed at 65% of its total price by the social security. Thus the contraceptive pill costs between 2 and 15€ per month and for women in precarious situations it is difficult to afford it. This step was taken in the face of a declining contraception use due to money issues. In my opinion this is a very good new law, it allows each woman to have access to means of protecting herself from an unwanted pregnancy. It will avoid certain consequences on women’s health such as abortion. I think that it is important for a woman to have this autonomy especially during her studies, period of our life when we don’t all have the possibility to buy it. Then it will enable women to have a discussion with a specialist in order to find the best method of contraception according to their situation. Moreover, this measure concerns more than 3 millions of women so it’s a very important law that has been voted.

  4. I think that's a good thing because young women today do not protect themselves enough during intercourse. They are often unaware of the lack of contraception during intercourse and the consequence that it can endure. So I think that offering the opportunity to avoid a family disaster by free contraception will make it possible to realise that you must protect yourself during sex. Women may also not have the means to obtain it.

  5. hello, I think it's a very good thing that contraception for women become free because all the women must be protected.
It is already a great progress because women who doesn't have the necessary money can be protected.
I my opinion we don't have to pay for have a means of contraception.
But only the women under 25 years old have the right to free but not the others. this is not correct that other women can't have a free contraception too.
On my perception all the contraception must be free and all people must have access to this advantage.

  6. In my opinion, it's great that women can have an easy access to contraception for free. A lot of people aged 25 and under are still studying and live in precariousness. It means that a woman may not be able to buy some food because she have to pay for her contraceptions.
Moreover, I think it's good that it is for all women's contraceptions because it allow them to choose what is the best for them. However I would appreciate if the men's contraceptions could be free too as it's not always women responsibility and men may want to be sure about their protections. Furthermore, it provides equality for sex contraceptions.

  7. Hello, I think it's a good thing that female contraception is an issue that catches the attention of many people because this subject is understandable to all women and it is scandalous that they cannot have contraception in 2021 , that they do not have the opportunity or the means to protect themselves during sex.
The bar has been set at 25 because "it is an age which corresponds, in terms of economic, social and income" to "more autonomy. However, I find that this decision was taken quite late because before this law arrived, several women put their lives in danger so that they could protect themselves.

  8. Hello, as far as I’m concerned as a woman, I think that this new decision it’s important for all women and it is a decision which had to been taken a long years ago… 4 out of 10 are taking pills as a contraption method , to have some for three months it will cost you generally around of 5 euros and it makes a total of €20 per year. I don’t want to say that €20 per year is nothing because not all of us have the same possibilities and if it will be free it is a very smart decision because it could helps a lot of women who need those contraceptives. 9. That is excellent news! This decision is justified when we see that many young women give up contraception because of the cost.
Moreover, it's even more satisfying to learn that not only the contraception is free but also all the consultations that come with it.
Indeed, a study carried out by Mutuelle des Etudiants de France shows that 12% of young women don't have a gynecological follow up.
And of course, it's a new step towards gender equality.

  10. The cost of women contraception is way too expensive. Women under 25 should not be restrained by the price of medical procedures related to it and should be able to receive it for free. A lot of young women should never have to go thru an involuntary birth.
Moreover women who are under 25 are still covered by their parents contrary to women older then 25 who are independant and can make their own choices. So I think that free contraception for women is a great idea and is going to help many women to not hesitate between financial issues and their health.

  11. I think it’s à really good news ! Not all women have the budget to pay their contraception all their life. So I think it’s really legitimize to have it free. But, I don’t get the fact that only women who are under 25 could have this benefit and not the others. In my opinion, every woman should get this chance. Nevertheless, I think it’s a first step to have ultimately, free contraception for all women no matter their age. Maybe, the next step will be to make all hygenic protections free for everybody.

  12. I think it’s a very good thing because all the young women can’t buy contraception, now this is more accessible for all women. This is a really good thing too because it’s a new step towards gender equality. But it’s a shame that contraception is not free for all women over 25 because age does not determine the means a woman has to obtain contraception.

  13. Contraception is an indispensable and vital thing for young women. It was created in 1956 by Gregory Pincus. It was a really good idea but it should not be paying because students don’t have necessarily the means for pay it or don’t dare to ask to their parents… So I think it’s even a better decision to make contraception free for women under 25.
That’s also an open-mindedness and an evolution of mentality.

  15. In my opinion, contraception being free is an advance for women, as it shouldn't be costing money. I think being able to protect ourselves from having a baby shouldn't be something we have to pay for, so it seems like a really good news. Yet, my opinion is still kind of reserved because of course, contraception being free is obviously a great decision. But why is it only available for women under the age of 25 ? Does that mean that after that deadline, we shouldn't protect ourselves anymore ? We must have a baby, according to society ? And what about what we trully want, if we don't want to create a family yet ? I assume they wanted to take a good decision, they wanted to show that women's rights are being more and more considered, but it is not enough yet. As far as I am concerned, contraception should be free for women and for men, no matter what our age is. I don't know anything about economics so I can't tell what the impact in the economy would be, but I definitely think that it shouldn't be mandatory to pay in order to protect ourselves, whether it is not to have a baby, or to avoid catching a STI/STD. Condoms should be free too, I think. Any kind of contraception should be free, and for all of us, no matter what our gender is. To sum up, the initiative is great, it shows their goodwill, but there is still some progress to do.

  16. Hello, in my opinion this is a very good news. A lot of women want to, but can't use contraception because financial reasons. It's a need for thousands women and girls.I was very surprised to read that consultations will be free too, it's a big evolution. It's real that at 15 like 20 the financial investments depend of parents or are very unstable. As I explained I was very happy to know this advance but I still don't understand the age limit. I understood that at 25 every women should be in capacity to pay contraception and consultations. I guess it will be more difficult to pay suddenly contraception and consultations if they never had to. I support the hope that gynecological needs will be truly free, because at any age it's not a choice.

  17. in my opinion, the implementation of free contraception is a good thing, sometimes women give up contraception for financial reasons or by forgetting to protect themselves. Its allows women to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy, it will prevent abortion. However, I do not understand why this law only applies to women under 25, for me every woman has the right to protect herself.

  18. In my opinion, it is a very good thing and it should be like this because some women can't afford it, especially at this young age whereas it is necessary. In any case, it is a big progress for women's rights.

  19. Hello, contraception can already be very expensive. Up until now, we had free and anonymous contraception until the age of 18, then overnight the contraception we took was no longer reimbursed or covered anonymously. That's why some people don't take contraception. I think what is important is that women have a choice of contraceptive methods, whether they are minors or adults. When we have a choice, we take our contraception better. So I think that making contraception free is a step forward and even more so to extend it until a young women of 25 years old because as times change and mentalities change I think that in 2021 not all women between 18 and 25 years old will be able to afford to pay for contraception when they think they can do without it.

  20. my opinion on free contraception at 25 is very positive. Making it free allows more women to be able to take the pill and takes away the financial problems that some women might have to buy it but I don't understand why that stops you at 25? Society continues to have dictates for women that she must not get pregnant too old and this law works in its direction. Then after the free contraception I hope it will be the same for the hygienic protections that many precarious women cannot get (the good news is that now in high school there are hygienic protection dispensers). To end on a positive note, this news is still very good since we see a change but especially since the complaints of women have been heard

  21. First of all, I think this is good news. Indeed, the price of contraception was about 15€ per month. However, some women may be in financial difficulty, and sometimes can't afford to add things to their monthly expenses. So I think this can really help. Also, contraception is quite important for some women who don't want children. There are people who sometimes end up with an unwanted child, or one that they can't afford to support because they couldn't access birth control. However, I find it slightly unfair that women under the age of 25 cannot access this assistance. Indeed, some women of 24 years old for example are just as concerned by the problem. Finally, I think that this is good news because thanks to this announcement, many women will be helped.

  22. Hello,
as a woman under 25 i feel highly concerned about what Olivier Veran announced. On the one hand, i feel like its a progress. Its important to support women and especially young women who are discovering their sexuality but also who are usually studying besides. The majority of women under 25 aren't financially independant which make this new law even more relevant. But on the other hand, it excludes women over 25 and because of that feeling of exclusion, we can't really talk about "equality" like Mr Veran said. To conclude, this law is definitly an improvement even though the government could do better to support women in their daily life.

  23. I think it is normal that contraception should be free. Women should not have to pay for their pills. Nowadays, sexual relations affect more and more young people, who do not necessarily have the means to pay for contraception and who are confronted with responsibilities such as getting pregnant or having an abortion.

  24. I am really overwhelmed to know about this Olivier Véran’s announcement because it is extremely important to give means to a young woman in order to use contraception and to prevent unwanted pregnancies without any financial worries. Plus, this decision is a step towards gender equality as female contraception has always been a lot more expensive that male contraception. But, on the same hand, I am concerned about women above 25 who aren’t able to afford contraception. So, I think that French government should still try to extend the age limit for free contraception.
