Compulsory test

When a student misses too many classes, the teacher gives them a compulsory test so they can get a main grade. What do you think about it? Do you think it is a good idea?

  1. Hello.
There's a lot of reasons why a student misses class. It can be because they are inconsiderate, or because they think they're self-organized enough to skip class, or even maybe because they are just lazy. But usually, they have a good reason to do so. Especially when they are in high school. In my opinion, grown-up students genuinely know what is best for them. I feel like they need to prioritize their mental health over the school. A student can suffer from a lot of mental illnesses or bullying even though they look like everyone else. They can be hypochondriac, or suffer from an anxiety disorder, depression, or even school phobia. So, that's why I understand the use of a compulsory test, It helps the teacher to give a grade to a student who's been missing for a long time, and additionally, it gives a chance to the student to not repeat the class. To my mind, it is a good compromise between both ways.

    1. First of all, a compulsory test is a mandatory review for some students who skip too many classes.

To begin, we don’t know the reason why these students miss too many classes.
It can be important reason, maybe they should skip classes for a good reason… They also can have a school phobia, so it’s not their fault and they didn’t want that.
But also, it can be lazy, unmotivated and not hard-working students. Most of these are bumptious and self-centered. In this case, this is unfair and this is not equal to other students who spend their time working for exams.

In both case, there is consequences in the long and short term. Therefore, the compulsory test is an opportunity fort their future. Moreover every students must have the same equality.

  2. First, there are different reasons why students miss classes, and we can’t know exactly why they do this.

Students don’t attend classes because maybe they don’t feel good: they can be sick, or they can even have a school phobia and be bullied by their classmates.
But there are some students who play truant because of their laziness: usually, this kind of students are lackadaisical and hypochondriac.
But above all things, situations can be different, and we can’t judge people without knowing the real reason of their acts.

In my opinion, compulsory test is a very good idea in both cases because it allows students not to repeat classes and still have grades even if they were absent. If there were no compulsory tests, it would be unfair for other students who work hard to succeed their studies.

  3. Hi,

Knowing the level of students is essential for a school to assign them to a form that matches their actual capabilities and decide whether students should repeat a class or not. Therefore an obligatory exam must be taken by each who did skip tests.
There are two cases to consider :
The student's truancy is due to school phobia. In this case, forcing the student to take an exam may not be the solution. We preferably should mute the student to another school. Or pay him some appointments with a psychologist. Or foster his dropping out of school. But students suffering from school phobia are very hard to spot. That's why teachers should be trained to deal with and fix students' school phobia. At least, teachers should be available and all ears with them.
The student skips tests because he got a good grade. Or because he doesn't want to risk a poor vote. In these cases, the mandatory exam may be an efficient solution to their truancy. To my mind, this kind of exam is beneficial for this kind of student as it will teach them that they have to face difficulties and they cannot just simply ignore them. When they are adults, they will have to face problems that they will not be able to get away with by ignoring them.
To sum up, those tests are needed not only to evaluate pupils' level but also to urge them to mature and take responsibility.

  4. If a student is absent during many classes, whether it is because of a valid or an invalid reason, I think the teacher should still grade that student. So, giving them a compulsory test is not a bad idea because it will lead the teacher to be fair to other students as the ranking is an important factor to get admission in universities. Plus, this test will also help the teacher to know about that particular student's capabilities in the subject.

  5. First of all, I think that having a single main grade is absolutely not representative of a student's level. A good grade can be a strock of luck, and you can get a bad grade because you didn't feel good during the test, or because you made silly mistakes because you were not focus enough. So, I think that having a single grade would not be objective. However, when a student is absent a lot, teachers don't really have the choice. I understand the use of this test which at least allows the student to have a grade. Then, it can help a student who suffers from test anxiety to have only one test. Also, I don't think we should think that a student who doesn't show up often is doing it on purpose. Some people suffer a lot, and high school is a huge source of stress.

  6. Hello,
First of all I think education is something important for children and no one should be deprived of it. If a student misses classes, he must catch up in order to know as much as his classmates.

In my opinion, when the student returns, he has to do a compulsory test to have grades like his classmates. This allows the teacher to assess the skills acquired by the student and help him improve his knowledge. Moreover this complusory test is a good training for the student and permit him to know if he has enough worked. If he gets a good grade It can motivate him to work harder and not miss class anymore.

To conclude a compulsory test is not something to trap the student and give him bad grades. On the contrary, it allows him to maintain a pace of work and therefore a good academic level even by missing lessons. That is why I think It is a good idea.

  7. Hi !
I think that if the student is often absent, it maybe for a good cause, he may have health problems or even problems in his family that he can't talk about. He may also not come to class because he is a not serious student or who does not want to work. But I think that the teacher has the right to make him a complusory so as not to penalize him in the subject and so that he is a mark like all his classmates.

  8. A lot of students often play truant, especially in high school. There are two types of students absent from class, those who do not want to go and those who have a real reason to miss school. But in both cases, teacher gives a compulsory test to get a main grade.
Lazy students who prefer sleep rather than going to class have no excuse and can only blame themselves if the grade will be bad during the compulsory test. They don't realize that they could repeat class or fail their studies. It could be very bad for future.
On the contrary, a lot of students can't go to school because of bullying, anxiety or any kind of fear related to school. They can develop a school phobia and suffer from realizing that the weeks go by without being able to return to work. These students would like but can't lead a student life.
So in my opinion, a compulsory test is necessary to know the school level but it could depend of the situation of the student. I think that a lazy teenager and a depressive should not be manage in the same way.
To conclude, I totally agree with the system of the compulsory test to get a main grade but communication between teachers, students and parents can be a way to adapt fairer the situation.

  9. Hello,
When students miss too many lessons, it can be difficult for a teacher to assess them. The idea of a compulsory main test can therefore assess a student. People may say it's unfair because regular tests require less work than a main test which is the equivalent of an exam. In fact, it would be worse to leave a student without grades. Nowadays in case of student evictions due to covid, it could be widely used.

  10. A student who misses too many classes is a serious issue for teachers and especially with regard to the gradation of this student. Therefore, certain teachers give them a compulsory test so they can get a main grade.

First, a student that misses class one-time is not an important problem as everyone can get sick or have an appointment,  for instance. Yet, it becomes a serious issue if the student misses too many classes, and especially if he/she doesn't justify his/her absence as it means there are no reasons of this frequent absence. Thus the idea of a compulsory test would be totally fair and I guess it also would be appropriate to the case. Indeed, as the student misses too many classes he/she must be dealt with accordingly and has a compulsory test in order to get a main grade even if as far as I am concerned I think that an only grade is not representative of the real student's level, yet, it would ensure an equality between all the students and the teacher would be fair.
Furthermore, I think it is very important that the student be evaluated as universities are quite selective. In addition, this would be fair for the other students who work very hard to succeed and have good grades.

Taking everything into account, I think that the idea of a compulsory test for a student who misses too many classes is a great idea as it enables to grade the student and for the teachers to be all the more fair and egalitarian with the other students. However, teachers need to communicate with this students parents' as education is very important.

  11. I think it's good to give a test to a student who has missed too many lessons.
However it depends on the cause of the absence.
If he had the covid for exemple he cannot be present in class but he can work at home.
But if he misses lessons of his own will, he probably didn't work, so in my opinion it's necessary for the teacher to give him a test.
To conclude it's good for students because test enable to maintain a level in class.

  12. We can never know exactly why students may play truant and skip classes very often, however, whatever reason it is, in my opinion the compulsory tests are important for at least remind some students that if they skip classes, then it is not an excuse not to work, and it will help them to be more organised at home, because they will know that they can't escape the grade and they must study. But sometimes, there are some hard situations in their life that can explain why student didn't go to school, for example, someone in their family may have passed away, and student can't focus on the studies and is in despair. In these cases, a compulsory test may be hard for a student whose mental state is not stable. Of course, these kind of situations are really rare, but if it is the case, I think teacher need to understand and give some time for this student. But, if we're talking about hypochondriac students who are just being lazy, the compulsory test is a good solution. Everyone is different, and everyone has their own reasons, yet, having a grade is really important. So, compulsory test is necessary way to estimate the capacities of a student for their own wellbeing.

  13. Hello !
First of all, there are a lots of reasons why students can miss a test. Wether if it's a good reason or not, they should make it up. If they miss just one test, if they are sick for example, I think that there is no need to summon them in order to do this compulsory test, their teacher should make them do it another day. However, if they skip a lots of lessons or if they are absent only when there is a test, this compulsory test is a good to give them a "last chance" and to require them to come. For the ones who can't go to school because of an illness or something else justified, it is a good way for them to still have notes which are important because most of the french final exam subjects are continuous assessment. That is why this mesure is necessary: with the elimination of the final tests, the notes are less fair.

  14. It should be noted that there are different types of students who misse classes. Firstly students who are sick or have family problems, they are aware of their action. The second one is students who play truant without any good reason just because they are selfish. A compulsory test allows this students to be assessed in the same way. In my opinion the students who missed classes for valid results will pass this test easily because they works at home. Also, it will allow them to keep a grade which is important for their education. On the other hand it could be difficult for students who don’t work and skips classes by playing truant but it remains their choice. So i think this test is a good idea otherwise it will be unfair for other students, always present and working hard to success.

Firstly, I think students should have an equal average. If there were no compulsory tests, it would be unfair for other students who work hard to succeed their studies.

Moreover, if a student is absent during many classes, whether it is because of a valid or an invalid reason, I think the teacher should still grade that student, so that he does not neglect any lesson.

To conclude, in my opinion, compulsory test is a very good idea in both cases because it allows students not to repeat classes and still have grades even if they were absent.

  16. Sometimes student miss test for some various reasons (sick, appointment, etc...) and a problem arises if the student miss too much test until he has no grade or his average is false. This is why this idea is not too bad but there's some positive point (grade equality, keep focus on school , etc...) but there’s a problems we can ask ourselves about if only one grade is enough or not and if the student miss this test he can not have an other chance.

  17. Hi!
As far as I'm concerned , a compulsory test can be very useful for many students who are struggling with anxiety. A lot of students don't go to school for many reasons, it could be because they suffer from bullying and it can cause a cool phobia. That's why a compulsory test can give them a chance to be part of the school system ans still be grated even if they don't go at school.
But, on the other hand, I think it's hard to grade them based on only one test, it doesn't allow them to be evaluated on all their competences like the others have been during the school year.

It can also be beneficial for the teacher in order to assess whether the student manages to understand what is being studied and also to help him improve.

  19. First of all; it is important to know that there is a lot students, especially high school students who miss a lot of lessons. In particulary, the classes they don't like.
Is it a good thing to give them a compulsory test?

If students don't appreciate a class the solution is not to miss class. They must make efforts to adapt. Indeed, if they miss so much classes they are not going to progress but in the contrary they are going to regress. I think that the best way to make them understand not to miss lesson is to give them a test, but not necessary a big test.
Furthermore, give a test to this children who are note serious will allow these students to have the click to come back to class and to work more seriously.
But i think the first thing that the teacher has to do is talk with the student to find out if he has any problems or difficultes.

I think it is a good idea to do a compulsory test for the students who skip class every time, this may allow them to pass their year. But we don't know who is missed classes for good reason like, some students are percecuted by bully and they don't want to go to school for this.

  21. To begin with, it’s necessary to know the reason why a student decides to play truant, even if the teacher might not always find out the whole truth.

    Nowadays, the most common reasons
are: lack of motivation, school phobia, personal issues, anxiety and stress. For the people who struggle with this problems on daily basis, tests can make it even more difficult for them Therefore, I think that teachers should understand that many students are trying their best to succeed and that no one is perfect, but there always exceptions. For example, lazy and irresponsible students who deserve compulsory tests. Nevertheless, they must not think of it as a punishment considering that it’s just a way to get a grade and test their knowledge.

In conclusion, compulsory test is a good method to make students work harder and succeed in their future studies.

  22. Sometimes in the school year, a student skip classes for many reasons and this situation could be difficult for him.

First of all if a student play truant this action have a bad impact for his life because he will not progress and skip lot of element to understand the programme.
Moreover the day of a test if there are absent student, its not fair for others who were present. So i think, give a compulsory test its a good idea for the teatcher to evaluate a student.
Finally this system is a good compromise to remake another test.

  23. Hello,
I think that these tests are a good idea for two reasons.
Firstly they are important for the future of students, those who play truant aren’t aware of the importance of school. When they will be 20 years old, if they haven’t done the things that they were supposed to do, they will have a lot of trouble.
Truancy has consequences on the short and long term and these people inconsiderate that.
Secondly, compulsory tests are essential for equality. When a student skips classes and misses the hardest test and comes back, he either doesn’t get a test, or gets an easier one and it is really unfair to the other students in both situations. Equality is a necessary value at school.

But I have to qualify my thoughts because not all the missing students are like that, I mean not all of them are lazy to work. Some have school phobia because they are bullied, too anxious or don’t like the school system. For those, I think they should take distance learning courses but if they can’t do that because of their parents, for example, who refuse, then I think they should also have a compulsory test because it would be unfair anyway if they didn’t take it.
Therefore, I don’t really think they would fail this test because they aren’t bad students to begin with (some are of course but less than the lazy ones).
There are also pupils that have lackadaisical or on the contrary believe that they are so good that it is okay for them to skip classes; they are bumptious.
As a conclusion, I believe that we should introduce compulsory test at school for students who miss too many classes.
