Joséphine Baker

46 years after her death, Josephine Baker was buried in the pantheon. What do you know about her ? Do you think that it is important to pay tribute to worthy people when they are dead or should we do it when they are still alive ?

  1. First, it is important to know that Freda Josephine McDonald, known as Joséphine Baker, is a French singer, dancer, actress, leader and resistance fighter of American origin, born in 1906 in Saint-Louis and died in 1975 in Paris.
She was buried in the Pantheon 46 years after her death.

Why is Josephine Backer important? and it is important to pay tribute to worthy people when they are dead or should we do it when they are still alive ?

During World War II, she played an important role in the French Resistance. She then put her great popularity at the service of the fight against racism and for the emancipation of blacks, in particular by supporting the American civil rights movement.

In my opinion, we should pay tribute to worthy people in both cases.
Its important to remember them when they are dead because it allows society to not forget their achievements, and it inspires and humbles folks.
It is also important to celebrate them when thay are alive, and give them a voice in society, that way it improves society.

  2. First of all Josephine Baker was an American woman born in 1906 in Missouri. Since November 30, she is the first black woman to enter the pantheon. At first she was a dancer. She came to France with her troop with which she denounced the behavior of France with its colony. Then she became an actress and defended the Harlem Renaissance movement which promoted the emancipation of blacks. During the Second World War, she was a singer for the soldiers and also a French spy in the Resistance in 1939. She was a member of the Red Cross and engaged in the secret service of France and helped many people during the war.
In my opinion, I think paying tribute to someone is very important because it recognizes their work and congratulates them for what they do. But doing it when the person is still alive is always better; she can be proud of having dedicated her life to good causes and sees people thanking her. However, sometimes it takes a while to realize someone's devotion and we pay homage to them when they are dead.
In conclusion, I would say better late than never. Paying tribute to someone is always a good thing, but it is best when that person can attend their tribute.

  3. First of all, Josephine Baker was an incredible woman who fought against racism during her all life.
She was a singer and a dancer who used her popularity to support important causes. She was born on June 3, 1906 in the United States where she has been victim of racism and left on September 25, 1925 to the capital of France. She adopted eleven children of different origin whom she called the rainbow family. Therefore she was a French resistant, engaging in the secret services of free France
    during the World War II.
On the November 30, 2021, the president of France, Emmanuel Macron decided to enter her 46 years after his death at the Pantheon.
I think that this act makes it possible to always remember this woman and to pay tribute to her. Moreover I think it’s important to pay tribute to people when they are still alive to reward them and let them know how important they are.
To conclude this act allows us to always remember what Josephine Baker did for France as well as to recall the millions of dead for our country and our freedom today. Anyway by this act we will be able to remember an example of a brilliant woman who managed to integrate into a foreign country.

  4. To start, Josephine baker whose real name is Freda Josephine Mcdonalds is a singer and dancer, French resistance fighter of American origin, born June 3, 1906 in Saint-Louis (state of Missouri in the United States) and died April 12, 1975 in Paris. 46 years after her death, she entered the pantheon, a French historical monument.
From 1939, she defended several causes such as the fight against anti-Semitism and the protection of refugees.
During World War II Josephine Baker played a very important role in the resistance to the occupier, so she used her great popularity to fight against racism and for the emancipation of blacks, notably by supporting the Martin Luther King rights movement.

Yes, I think we should pay homage to worthy people in both cases because it is our duty to remember these iconic people when they died but they should not be forgotten when they are alive, it's very important for our society.

  5. First of all it’s important to realize that Josephine Baker had such an incredible life that it seems that she had several lives in one.
She was born in St Louis Missouri in 1906 in a poor family and had the dream of becoming a musical performer. Indeed in the 1920s she moved to France and became a very famous singer and dancer.
Obviously I consider that it is very important even 46 years after her death to pay tribute to someone of such stature and welcome her in the Pantheon.
Indeed not only she was an artist but she fought all the main causes of her time, particularly against racism, being a black woman. Moreover she actively participated in the Civil Rights Movement in the USA in the the1950s and also in the French resistance during WWII.
In conclusion I would say that Josephine Baker deserved recognition during her lifetime which she didn’t have from her own country and today it is only just and right to continue to pay homage to her.

  6. First of all, what I know about Josephine Baker: I know that she was a brave woman born in the United States. She began her career as a dancer and singer with the desire to shock. She loved France, she was a lieutenant in the French army and a member of the Resistance. She was an exemplary mother with a tribe of children, all from different origins. She also fought against racism. She died in 1975, shortly after her return to the stage. She was buried in the Pantheon on 30 November 2021 (her real body is still in Monaco) and I think it's a good thing because she is the first black woman to enter to the Pantheon and also the 6th woman. I think she totally deserves her place for all the help she gave to France.
Finally, I think it's important to pay a tribute to worthy people, whether they are dead or alive. It's probably better and more glorifying for them if we do it when they're still alive, but we can't always do it, so we have to celebrate them when they're still alive and keep doing it when they’re dying. Burying someone in the Pantheon help us remember them.

  7. One of the worthy people of the last era was Josephine Baker. She was outstanding with her work in the art because her dances were recognized by Parisian audience and became the symbol of freedom.
Josephine was particularly known because in the young age she started fighting with racism. Because of her unusual costumes , this woman's performances were forbidden in Australia, Czech Republic, Germany and Hungary but this made her dances more attractive for the audience.Josephine Baker was a gifted and strong woman.
In my opinion, it’s better to appreciate such people when they're alive. After their death, we also should remember about their achievements and what they did for getting our lives better.

  8. First of all, Josephine Baker was born in 1906 in Missouri, she was an American dancer, singer and actress but also a resistance fighter.
We can ask if Josephine Baker deserves her place at the pantheon.

Josephine Baker played a very important role in the french resistance during World War II. In effect, after her shows, she swaps her costumes for those of the Paris counter espionage. She is in contact with people of high society, she works with the red cross and become in 1940, secret agent for France. She will receive the Legion of Honor for her commitment.
Moreover, she fights against racism and decide to adopt 12 children with different origins to satisfy her need to be mother, but also to bear witness to this fight.
In my opinion, burying Josephine Baker at the pantheon allowed to show all these things that we didn't know about her, represent a very beautiful commitment but also to support her fight against racism. I think, however, that congratulating people alive would allow to them to contemplate the gratitude.

To conclude, Josephine Baker deserves her place at the pantheon and I think it's a very good advance for this monument that welcomed for 200 years only men.

  9. First, Josephine Baker was an American-born French dancer, singer, actress and rights activist. She was born on June 3, 1906, in St. Louis (Missouri, U.S.) and died on April 12, 1975, in Paris. She renounced her U.S. nationality and became a French national after her marriage to French industrialist Jean Lion in 1937, she raised her 12 children in France. On 30 November 2021, she entered the Pantheon in Paris, the first black woman to receive one of the highest honours in France.

This woman was extremely brave and strong. Josephine Baker played an important role during WWII: she aided the French Resistance. After the war, she was awarded the resistance Medal by the French Committee of National Liberation. Although based in France, Baker supported the Civil Rights Movement during the 1950s, she wrote articles about the segregation in the United States. After Martin Luther King’s assassination, his widow Coretta Scott King asked Josephine Baker if she would take her husband's place as leader of the Civil Rights Movement, but she declined.

To conclude, I think it is always a good idea to pay tribute to worthy people because it allows us not to forget these heroes and thank them for their acts of bravery, but in my opinion, we should do it when they are alive so they could be present at their tribute…

Joséphine Baker, died on April 12, 1975 in Paris. On November 30, 2021, by decision of the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, Joséphine Baker entered the Pantheon, thus becoming the sixth woman and the first black woman to join the Republican “temple”.
I think it's important to pay tribute to worthy people because they are part of history. They made history in one way or another. To pay homage to worthy people when they are alive or dead, and touching, but when they are dead it is more symbolic and a reminder to people who that person was.

  11. Josephine Baker is a French black woman, born in America, who has marked the French history by being a World War II resistance fighter. She also fought against racism and supported the civil rights movement of Martin Luther King.
I consider that it is extremely important to pay tribute to worthy people when they are alive as well as when they are dead. But, unfortunately, in this world, people like Josephine are only praised when they are dead. So, we should change this mentality and celebrate important personalities by motivating them and supporting them.

  12. Josephine Baker was born in the United States in 1906, she became a spy and transmited secret messages to the resistant fighters during WW2. Then she defended black rights and fought against racism. She also adopted 12 children of diferent origins.
Moreover she was the sixth woman to enter in the Pantheon and the first black woman.

I think it’s important to pay tribute to worthy people like her before and after their death, because we have to remember and take exemple of them. They defended and fought with honor important causes. Indeed their impact in our society should inspire as many people as possible.

  13. Firstly who was Josephine Baker?
Freda Josephine MacDonald know as Josephine Baker, was a dancer and singer who became wildly popular in France during the 1920s, she became one of Europe’s highest-paid performers, after spending her youth in poverty.
But mostly she was a courageous powerful woman. She worked for the French Resistance during WW2, and during the 1950s and 1960s devoted herself to fighting segregation and racism in the United States.
Sadly, on the 12th of April 1975 she died of a cerebral hemorrhage.
Not long ago, she was buried at the Pantheon in Paris. She became the first Black woman to be buried there.

To my mind I think that it is important to pay tribute to people that are still alive. When they were alive they could have been thanked and honored for what they did. But it’s important to keep telling their stories and what they did to help out society even after they have passed away.

  14. Hello, I did not know Josephine Baker before her burial in the Pantheon.

After that I learned that she was a singer and dancer in the 1920s, she was very talented. But she was also in the air. She was a woman who fought against racism and sexism.
Today, she represents the strength of women!

I think it doesn't matter if a person is dead or not, if their actions were right or they helped the world they should be honored. Here, Baker received eternal homage by being buried in the pantheon, the place where many great personalities rest.

Josephine Baker deserves her place in the Pantheon for these good deeds, and change the world by being the first black woman to rest there.

  16. I think Josephine Baker represents the French resistance, she fought against racism, and I think she was a very strong woman. When she was buried in the Pantheon, I really thought that she won a battle against racism. Obviously, I think she should have been honored more during her life. But I also think that having her buried in the Pantheon signals the end of a time when racism was commonplace, even though it is still present, and it shows that there has been an evolution in society. I think Josephine Baker should be proud of what she accomplished. She is the first black woman burried in the Pantheon and she really deserves her place.

  17. Josephine Baker was a very famous artist in the twentieth century. Born in the United States, she came to France at 19 to do a show and then settled there. During WWII, Joséphine played an important role as she became a spy who transmitted messages to French resistance fighters. In addition, in the 60s, she fought against racism and then for the rights of black people in the United States. 46 years after his death, on November 31, 2021, the President of the Republic Macron brings Joséphine Baker into the Pantheon.
Her journey has been that of an exceptional and courageous woman, but one wonders if it is still important to praise her now that she is dead or if it should have been done while she was still alive.

The Pantheon is a Parisian monument where the people who marked the history of France are buried. This is how the President paid tribute to Josephine Baker. Indeed it is very important to pay homage to her because she helped a lot the French resistance fighters thanks to her role of spy. She was brave, courageous, strong, talented and intelligent. She is a symbol of freedom. Her actions are now thanked by the will of the President to make her enter in the Pantheon.
Furthermore, the memory of Josephine Baker must be passed on between generations so that she and her actions are not forgotten. It was a very good initiative to want to bring her into the Pantheon.

To conclude, I think it is important in both cases. Remembering their actions after they are dead is as important as gratifying them while they are alive. We will remember Freda Josephine McDonald as a symbol of freedom.
