Spending habits

How can you define your generation's spending habits? Would you say your generation spends more than your parents' generation?

  1. In my opinion we don't spend more than our parents but more than our grandparents. The society in which we live is build on overconsumption, our parents are living in that since young. If we think about it we are not the one who started that. When they were child their parents had totally different spending habits but while growing up, the globalization has taught them to spend a lot. But on the other hand, we do spend more than them at the same age because consumption is getting bigger with years (so they spend more than when they were younger).

  2. Generation Z represents people born between the 1990s and the early 2010s. They are the first generation for whom new technologies are natural and taken for granted. This has led to new uses and new consumption habits.

By the end of 2019, Generation Z represented a third of the world's population, 65% in France. It is therefore a juicy market that is emerging for companies on condition that they adapt to these new consumption patterns strongly influenced by new technologies.

An ultra-connected generation ,indeed, Generation Z, has always lived with the Internet, their phones glued to their ears and connected to social networks. In fact, their rate of equipment with computers, smartphones and tablets exceeds by 5 to 10 points those of the previous generation. As for the more traditional media such as television and radio, they are now considered "old-fashioned". Companies must therefore use new means of communication to reach their target.

As Generation Z grew up surrounded by nomadic, fast and individualistic services and applications, the criteria of unlimited and speed are very important.

It is also a very participative generation,
Generation Z love and contribute to real-time information. She likes to create a buzz, she likes to be asked for her opinion and taken into account! Consumers must feel that they are brand ambassadors and therefore should not hesitate to solicit them. Like Macdonald who suggested that Internet users draw their next sandwich.
While in the generation of our parents, there were no smartphones, social networks. They lived in a world without internet so certainly a world without superficiality, although they didn't have internet access at the time, they could still stay informed about what happened in the world thanks to the newspapers and to the televisions.

To conclude, generation Z is becoming the core target of companies and represents a considerable stake. This generation has revolutionized traditional consumption patterns and that generation Z is not able to live without the internet because everything that surrounds us is made up of the internet and that inevitably, there is an overconsumption of social networks and the internet.

  3. I think the new generation is changing.
More, the consumption habits of the new generation are critical.
Some research shows that 1/5 of young people say they don't have any more money before the end of the month. This shows us that the new generation is spending more.

Therefore , nowadays we can pay by credit card with our phone which is directly connected with cards, which contributes to overconsumption.

to conclude the new generation consumes more than the previous one and we must pay attention to this.

  4. Nowadays, people, especially our generation, is more likely to spend a lot of money without really thinking. As soon as they see something that they like, they want to have it immediately, even if it is not really useful, or completely unnecessary.

So yes, I would say that my generation spends more than my parents' generation did at the time. We live in a society of consumption, where it is really easy to obtain whatever you want, thanks to contactless payment for instance. Moreover, people think that their happiness depends on their belongings : the more they have, the happier they are. That's why they spend a lot in books, clothes, shoes, jewelry, figurines,... Therefore, in our society in which technology takes a huge part, people always want to have the more recent phone, to always be up-to-date, even if it means to throw in the trash their phone that is still usable.

To put it in a nutshell, I think that our generation is definitely spending more than the previous one, but it goes along with how the society is evolving.

  5. As I was born in 2005, I am from generation Z and I grew up at the same time as the consumer society.

Consumer society has evolved because of the number of choices, purchasing power, globalisation and brand competition that keeps driving down prices. Clothing and more generally fashion is now a real business. Indeed, the fast fashion is very common today and everyone knows the name of shops that do it. Fast fashion means that clothes can be produced very quickly, very often and at low cost. However, these advantages are not without consequences for the environment and, even worse, for some people. I think we often overconsume.

This, plus the impact of social networks which allow endless manipulative advertising and sales, allows us to say that we may be consuming more than our previous generations. In addition, fashion was less widespread (no Fashion week, no advertising.. ) also, the production, the style and the use of clothes were very different before.

In conclusion, I think that we probably consume more clothes than our parents and that our clothing habits are not healthy. That's why we should try to improve our habits for better ones by trying to consume less or differently.

  6. First, when we talk about our generation we used to talk about generation Z. This generation grew up with internet and is therefore ultra-connected.
Our generation incorporates pleasure dimensions into their choices, everything is going faster and we need something new all the time. Therefore our way of life influence our spending habits.
In effect, every teenager wishes to be tendy and spend a lot on material objects such as phones. As soon as we want something we wish we had it and our desires are endless.
With internet everything goes faster and we no longer count our expenses as for example on clothing website. In conclusion i think we spend more than our parent’s generation because life is not the same and with globalization which keeps growing our habits will change again.

  7. Young people of 2022 are all members of the generation Z who represent the future of the world. We are the first generation that has grown with new technologies and new means of digital consumption.

I think that the world have evolved and the consumption habits too. Indeed, with the apparition of new technologies like smartphones or Apple Watch we can see that people of new gereration spend more money than the old generation. All the new society is founded on the use of new resources and if somebody is not adapted to this system his is going to be in difficultes to find a work, develop relationship with others…
However, the possession of new ressources requires much more money than before and leads to large expenses.
We are also in a world of ultra consumption and we spend a lot of money in a lot of things who are not imporants like selfie poles, accessories to hold phones….

To conclude, I think that our generation has adopted habits of extreme consolmation, which should be regulated because our expenses are much more important than that of the old generations

  8. Hello.
I think it depends on the person. But in general, I think that life is much more expensive than during our parent’s generation, so we have to spend more. For example, for today's students, having a computer is very important to be able to work. Personally, I really need it as a working tool. Before, it was not really necessary. It's the same with phones. But, it depends on the people. Some people spend a lot without thinking about the usefulness of their purchases, others think more. Moreover, I find that our generation is much more obsessed with appearance and is much more superficial. Many people feel obliged to buy this clothes or this phone to feel accepted.

  9. Our generation was born during the time of new technological advancement, we can use our phone easily computers easily etc, moreover all of those new technologies are essential in today's society for example if you are a student you need to have a phone or a computer to check your homework on the internet, so those sorts of spendings are essential and not affordable for everyone, they cost a lot of money. In addition socialmedias can convince you to buy products if they are trendy and you want to follow the trend.
To conclude consumer society has evolved, and people believe in this evolution by buying more to follow the new trend and then the next one... it never ends .

  10. My generation has grown up at the same time as the appearance of consumer society, which defines massive consumption of industrialized goods and services and is a consequence of the development of the industrial capitalist model.

We, as teenagers, are confronted to this issue because we are always stimulated by publicity wether it is on the streets or on social media. There is this constant need for the newest model of phone or shoes...
Especially in high school there is the need to show off your new clothes or new jewelry etc; because you want to prove to others that you are "cool" by owning certain items.
It encourages these frequent spending habits by wanting to buy something because your friend has it and you want it too.

Furthermore, nowadays there are more brand to choose from because there is more competition between them so they have to attract more clients by developing their marketing strategies.

This can also explain why our generation spends more than our parents' at the same age, in addition to the fact that they were less exposed to the publicity on social media and that they were raised with a bigger sense of money management like how to spend it wisely.

  11. First of all our generation known as Generation Z refers to people born between 1997 and 2010. We are a generation born when internet was already well established.
I would say our generation spends a lot more than the last. In fact, some studies show that we are a generation that spends a lot especially on luxury clothes because we have to distinguish ourselves with our own style. In a growing population, people need to feel unique and find their own personality. This quest for identity is done through the object that we seek to have and not through the person that we want to be. That is why we over consume and spend a lot of money on all kinds of things even though they are not needed. Moreover, with the development of technology, people like to have the newfangled devices and spend a lot to get them.
To conclude our generation is also encouraged by the celebrities and influencers who push the society to have more and more things. In fact, they define happiness as having everything they want.

  12. Our generation is used to to the normalisation of having all of the benefits since we were born that some of the previous generations may have only dreamt about. Ever since we came to the world, most of us were surrounded by all of the kind technologies, toys, sweets and had an easy childhood comparing to the generations of our parents or even grandparents.

I can say from myself that I’m spending much more than my parents in their teenage time. For example, comparing to my mom, who survived the “perestroika” that is reconstruction of the Soviet political and economic system in Russia in the 80’s, where people were starving and the dead bodies were laying on the streets of her neighbourhood, of course I’am spending a lot more money than her, thanks to the possibilities that I have and a peaceful life, for which I’m really grateful.

Nowadays, children often complain about their life because our generation mostly care about the material values. The society is pushing us to buy everything because of the commercials and social medias that our parents didn’t have. That’s why theres a big difference between spending habits of us and our parents.

  13. I was born in 2005, so I am a member of the Z generation. the latter grew up at the same time as the emergence of the consumer society and new technological advances. According to a survey, our generation spends more than the older generation. Today's teenagers spend mostly on luxury goods. Fashion, even fast fashion accentuates the overconsumption. Moreover, advertissement play a role important because he awarness a teenagers so have want to buy more.

  14. Our generation, called generation Z, is a population born between 1997 and 2010. We never knew life without social networks and we are major consumers of technological products.
In my opinion, social networks are the main source of influence of buying. In fact, we don't need everything in our wardrobe, our bedside table or even in our phone. We can use the example of Apple, watches, computers, headphones and phones at very high prices and most people are followers of this brand. We can also talk about clothes, a very important material for our generation, fashionable brands are often very expensive.
On the one hand that our parents do not really move away from our important expenditure because they live today in the same consumer society as us. On the other hand, I imagine that during their childhood, our grandparents restricted them and made them evolve with the values of the financial difficulties that they were able to know themselves.
To conclude, our parents also spend a lot of money but are probably more focused on the necessities while our generation proves the excessive expenses.

  15. The world, the society and the mentalities have changed, actually the new generation is considerate like generation Z, this name represente everyone who has grown with the new technology.

First of all, its obvious our generation spends more than our parent's generation because this new society call us to consume a lot, so indeeed we live in a society with model capitalist.
Today lot of people and especially the teenager are present on social media, these applications are financate by publicites that show new technologies, new clothes, this type of situation show us the effect of overconsume and overproduction.

Finally we see that habits change between generation and this effect is caused by the impact of the new society.

  16. In my opinion, my generation spends a lot whether it is an expensive gadget like iPhones or something to wear. This excessive consumption of material things can be explained by the presence of internet and social media in our societies these days. So, online shopping has made buying things easily without stepping out of the house. Plus, brands equally take advantage of the internet as they can promote their products everywhere which tempts people to take a look at them on the brand's website and buy them instantly. Contrary to Gen Z, our parent's generation didn't spend a lot on unnecessary items because they were not exposed to all the different things available in the world. On top of that, they equally know how to manage money better than us as they think wisely before buying something.

  17. Hello!
First of all, I think that our generation, called generation Z, has quite different spending habits from our parents' generation. As always, there are different types of consumers. But, unlike previous generations, we didn't know the world without the internet and our consumption is very influenced by it. Indeed, the internet and social media influence our way of consumption. For example, the influencers have a lots of clothes and accessories and we finally find it normal to have so many whereas they get them free and they are often paid to show them to us. Moreover, nowadays, there are a lots of fast fashion brands and we favor therefore quantity over quality while our parents bought less but better so they kept them longer. On the other side, second hand shopping is much more widespread and accessible than it was for our parents' generation and especially thanks to the internet. To conclude, I think that, even if we recycle clothes and other objects, we still consume more than our parents did.

  18. Across the ages spending habits have changed considerably.
I was born in 2004 and my generation grew up when internet was becoming part of daily life. Therefore it became easy to purchase goods and services on line. For example most flight tickets are paid for via the internet. Furthermore companies like Amazon have revolutionized the way we spend our money.
By comparison the spending habits of our parents were very different. If you wanted to purchase something in most cases you would have to go into town. Moreover the choices were a lot more limited than today with e-commerce. So in our parents generation there was perhaps less temptation to spend

Compared to my parents, it is easier nowadays to buy low-cost products from develaping countries. Indeed, the internet has contributed to the development of international trade. Really, I used to buy clothes and accessories when I felt like it because I knew it was easy to order and receive fairly cheap things quickly. In the last year or two, I realized that my orders could have not only a cost for my wallet but also a cost for the planet since it could have a carbon footprint. I am now aware of this and I am more careful about buying second-hand things when I really need them.

The study finds that the consumption behaviours of French Generation Y are similar to
those of young people in developed countries, regardless of their age, gender or country of
    origin.
We will ask ourselves how we can define the spending habits of our generation? What if
we say that our generation spends more than our parents' generation?
Our generation spends much more and more easily than our parents' generation, because
    of the new technology.
Our generation and the generations to come are almost born with screens in their hands,
the new technology has also developed, now a phone is a bank card. With a computer, a
tablet or a phone, we can buy on the Internet, make appointments (e.g. at the hairdresser).
I also think that the spending habits of our generation, and also because of social
networks. Wanting to look like..., finding a nice jumper in a picture. Brands promote, a lot
on social networks because they know that young people are there a lot and therefore can
    reach them much easier.
We discussed the consumption behaviour of our generation compared to that of our
parents. We saw that the cause of this consumption is due to the new technology. We can
say that our generation spends much more than our parents' generation.

  23. I would say that it is true. Our generation spend a lot of money into clothes by majority because we are more focus on our appearance and this is why we spend a lot of money into habits. But the fact that we spend more money than older generation it's because now we can buy something more easier than before. Thanks to internet and shopping website, we have a better access nowadays.
