  2. Hey everyone!
I wanted to share with you my knowledges about native Americans!
For two years I read a book in class, called " The absolutely true diary of a part time Indian". It has been written by Markus Zusak who was the main character of his, as he were a child : it's a true story.
What about the plot? A young Native American comes from a little ghetto full of other native Americans, but he has the particularity to be extremely clever. That's why his teachers cheer him up after he had been bullied because of his many physical anomalies, and push him to try enter in a "white" private school. He succeeds entered there but is victim of clichés.
In class, we also studied native Americans through debates and short home made videos.
Native Americans usually are victim of sectarianism whereas they represent an important part of the population in the USA. They are stuck in reserves without any running water or proper house. Without talking about access to education !
They took part of the country's story and should have a proper place in the population !

  3. First of all, I wanted to say that I never learned anything at school about Native Americans. We only saw them through Christopher Colombus' discovery. I think it is a shame because I now realise there is so much populations around the world whose origins I do not know very well.
Furthermore, the vision that is shown in movies or cartoons might be a stereotype.

But I do know that the native american people suffered a lot, and were deported.

To put it all in a nutshell, even if we are taught some things about the native american's history, we do not know anything about their culture.

  5. Hi,

In class we had to make a presentation on Native Americans and I worked on 29th December 1890. There was a horrible massacre in Wounded Knee, South Dakota during the one the US Army killed around three hundred Lakota Indians for nothing on their own Reservation. Indians were disarmed the day before and were also surrounded by five hundred american soldiers.
I also learned that America decided to terminate its contract with Lakota Indians by cutting the Great Sioux Reservation, with the intention of separate the Indian tribes in Februar 1890. This contract was established in Fort Laramie, Wyoming in 1868 and was supposed to help and protect Lakota tribes, but was always breached by White people.

Fortunately, there are now laws which protect and recognize Native Americans.

  6. Hi everyone!
First of all, I've never studied at school the native Americans like Coline. However, I know that they helped several times English's population ( the first one who came from Britain after Colombus, the first colony ) giving them food, they've taught them how to feed themselves by their own, etc... that's why Thanksgiving exists. Indeed, it's the most important celebration in the United States because of this period.
Moreover, native Americans were in America a long time ago, scientists think they were there at the same time as our ancestors in Europe.
to sum up, I wish I could know some informations about them despite I've never learnt something about them except the informations I wrote ( because of tv and books ).

It's actually the first time i write on this blog and i wanted to answer Hadil's question. So in my english classe i did a presentation on the 11th of march 1824 and that's what i found : it was the creation of the bureau of the indian affairs. At that time It was made in order to liberate the indian lands for their exploitation by the colonists and it provided them health care. The bureau of Indian affairs, also known as the BIA, is one of the two bureaus under the jurisdiction of the Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs.
Today this bureau is located in Washington D.C and the current director is Michael S. Black.
I think it's a good idea to talk about the american natives because it brings us a lot of culture and knowledge.

  8. Hello !

    - As for me, I remember my lesson about Native Americans and it interested me a lot. In fact Native Americans are the people who were in North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean Islands when Europeans arrived. Christopher Columbus was travelling west, so he thought he was going to India. This is why he called people “Indians”.
    - Moreover at that time some 10 million indians lived in the area that would become the United States. Then, these migrants and their descendants pushed south and east, adapting as they went. Finally, like Lena said this gave rise to the celebration "Thanksgiving" to remember when English people gave food to Native Americans.

  11. hello everyone,
As for me, I have learned some things about Native Americans in class, every year, when it comes to Thanksgiving, with the Pilgrims who came on the Mayflower and they helped each others and they ate all together during about 3 days and it was, in my memory (but I've checked on internet the exactly period) in 1621, so, about one century after Christopher Columbus came to colonize the America in 1492. To go further, just for the know, he didn't want to reach India, he wanted to reach Japan.

  13. In the U.S.A, Native American are people who belong to one of the over 500 distinct Native American tribes that survive intact today as partially sovereign nation within the country's modern boundaries. These tribes and bands are descended from the pre-Columbian indegenious population of North American.
Native American are also called Indians.
In nowdays I know that about 5 millions Native American live on tribel bands. It means that they always live on réservations. Living conditions are not satisfied. Because of scarcity of jobs and lack of economic opportunity a lot of adults on reservations are unemplyed. Among American Indians who are employed, many are earning below poverty wages. Indeed, there is housing crisis in Indian country. Despite the indian Housing Authority's recent efforts, the need for adequate housing on réservations remains acute. In addition, many American Indians are living in substandard housing. About half of reservation housing is considered inadequate. The question of health is also bad. Pharmacies and doctor's offices outside of hospitals are completely non-existent in some communoties and Indians suffor from heart disease, diabetes, tuberculosis, cancer.
I think that they took part of the country's story and should have their own place in the population !

  15. Hi !
First of all, like Lena and Colline said, we never studied Native Americans at school, that's why we don't really know them.
However, this summer I went to America and I had the opportunity to talk with a Native American. Indeed, I visited Antelope Canyon, one of the amazing national parks in the USA which is managed by Native Americans and some of them still live there ! We could learn that the Native Americans have a real respect for the animals and the nature. Indeed, they don't want to destroy or to pollute so they product just what they need.
Then, a woman who lived there told us that a lot of people (mostly european people) call them the « Indians » because when Christopher Colombus discoverded America, in fact he wanted to go to India. But, the native Americans really don't like when we call them the « Indians » : they are two different populations and cultures.
Finally, she told us that the Native Americans suffered a lot during the past years and now some people still thinks that they are not as developed as the other americans. However, that is not the case.
To put all in a nutshell, Native Americans are an interesting population although we don't know well their culture.

  19. Hi everyone!
Firstly, I don’t know much about native Americans since, like many people, I have only studied this subject threw Thanksgiving.
I know that the Native Americans lived in peace and prosper until Christopher Columbus and the Europeans first arrived on the shores of North America in 1492. At that time, horses and other animals were brought over, which began to spread diseases among the natives who had no immunity to these new diseases. Unfortunately this lead to thousands of deaths.
In addition, the Europeans began to take over the land and set up farms and homes there and they also started persecuting the Natives.
All in all, as soon as the Europeans arrived in America, the Native Americans’ culture slowly started to deteriorate which I think is quite upsetting since the Natives helped the Europeans survive by giving them food and shelters.

I know that on the 16th of November 1990, a law named "The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act" (NAGPRA) was proclaimed. The goal of this law is to give back Native American possesions to their descendants, and also cultural items like sacred objects or funeral objects. Lots of archeologists accused the law for not letting them search about tje first residents of the United States, however the law was still proclaimed

As everyone i want to speak and share with you what I learnt during my lesson on Native Americans.

I did a presentation, in my class, on the 10th of March 2017. After my research, I found that on this day, the Indian Nation of all the USA walked in Washington DC to show their disagreement against the Dakota Pipeline Access.
The North Dakota's pipeline (canalisation for long-distance transport of fluids) is a problem because this construction site goes through an Indian reserve, sacred lands, and threatens the environment because of the pollution it will cause.

I was suprised to learn that today, the Native Americans Culture is threatened and in danger.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't know much about Native Americans but I still remember that they are people who first settled in australia. Some people call them Indians because when Christopher Columbus discovered America, he thought he had sailed to the country of India and called people the Indians.
Moreover, there were different tribes with their own culture living in different areas. As a matter of fact, each tribe had a particular religion, language and customs. For example, there were the Cherokee and the Navajo.
Furthermore, these tribes were rather peaceful before the arrival of Christopher Columbus and the Europeans.

It takes places in the context of the rise of Red Power movement and the organization of the American Indian Movement based in 1968 in Minneapolis. They dwelt the island during nineteen months, of the 20 November 1969 to the 11 June 1971. But unfortunately, they were expelled by the federal government.

I will talk about events in relations with Native Americans in 1990.
First, the film "Dances with wolves" made by Kevin Costner was realised. It deals with indians and their relations with white americans. It defend the cause of indians against North American army during the American Civil War.
Moreover, in Canada, in a city called Oka, the gouvernment sent the army to control a crisis with the Mohawks, an indian tribe. The reason was that the indians refused to leave their area where the city wanted to put a golf. This event created lots of tensions and a lot of riots.
Finally, some descendants of the Native Americans obtained November 23rd a Law for the protection and the return of Amerindians' graves.

In fact, during a press conference in Washington, Russell Means, representative of the Sioux Indians declared in the name of all the Sioux Indians didn't want to be citizens of the United States and try to be joined by the Sioux Indians who live in the five states (Lakota country includes parts of the states of Nebraska, South & North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming). For that, he specifies that passports and driving licences will be distributed to all those who give up their American nationality. They also assert have the right to be free and independant. Moreover, the Lakota freedom activists considered that treaties signed with the U.S was worthless words on worthless paper. Futhermore, they consider that these treaties served for stealling their culture, them customs and them lands. Finally, the Sioux Indians are now free of them actions and free to make what they want in theire lands.

People lived in the United States long before the arrival of Christopher Columbus and the Europeans. These people and cultures are called Native Americans.
The Native Americans were grouped into tribes or nations usually based on the area they lived in and their culture such as their religion, customs, and language.
We also know Native Americans as American Indians. This is because when Columbus had first landed in America, he thought he had sailed all the way to to the country of India.Today, some of the descendants of the original American Indians live on réservations and help to protect their heritage and culture.

I would like to summarize the evolution of Native Americans.

Native Americans were persons who was there before Christopher Columbus arrived in Bahamas, in America, in 1492. They formed tribes, that sometimes made war. After the "discover of America", they were hunted, hurted, injured and killed. They just have retreated to save their lives from the East to the West. White people tracked them to take their lands. After centuries of massacre, they finally are declared citizens of the United States, in 1969. Nowadays, some tribes still exist and other Native American Indians have been integrate into the society.

  41. The Native Americans are the first inhabitants of the American continent. In 1492, the explorer Christopher Columbus thinks he found the East Indies but land in America. Because of this error, the people of the “New World” will be called “Indians”.
The Europeans will first call them “savages” who will eventually become “Indians of America” to distinguish them from the people of India.
The arrival of the Europeans caused important consequences: the number of inhabitants will decrease because of wars and diseases, their way of life and their culture will undergo mutations and their economic and demographic situation will deteriorate…
Today, the percentage of remaining tribes is very low and are endangered!
