INEQUALITIES

In social sciences, my class and I are currently working on inequalities. We have been talking about salaries inequalities, men/women inequalities, chances inequalities...

This subject is very important because it makes you understand the world you live in and the chance that you have over other people and what you can do to help them.

Do you think that inequalities are overrated or do you think that it's important to talk about them?

Have you ever been a victim of an inequality or the witness of one?

  1. Hi everyone,

I think it’s great that you are currently working on different forms of inequalities in Social Sciences because many people are left unaware that people can be treated unequally due to their gender, skin colour, ethnic, religion…In my opinion, it’s more than important to talk about inequalities because if nobody talks about them we are not going to progress and people will still be treated differently.

First of all, in 2017 inequalities were highlighted like never before. Indeed, a lot of associations became popular like “Black Lives Matter” which is an international activist movement that fights for black people’s right, and like the “Me Too” movement which encouraged women to speak up about sexual assault and harassment in order to raise awareness and highlight its commonality. Furthermore, the gender pay gap in also a topic that is becoming more and more popular in speeches, conversation...because currently the international average stands at a difference of 18% between women and men’s salaries and statistics show that only by 2119 the pay gap will disappear which is quite shocking.

Secondly, I haven’t been victim of equalities but only probably because I haven’t entered the working world yet. However, I have studied famous people who have been treated unequally due to different factors. For example, Rosa parks who refused to give up her seat to a white man on a bus was convicted of disorderly conduct.

All in all, inequalities shouldn’t be left unheard of and I think and hope that 2018 will bring a lot of progress towards them. In other words, we have to make it a priority and undertake the challenge of addressing the growing inequalities in the world.

  2. Hi!
First of all inequalities exist since many siecles. Unfortunately even today this inequalities continue to exist. I am very shock that in some countries there stile are huge inequalities like girls who can't go to school or who are married at 11.
I never really understand why men are superior to women especially that I think women are more strong than men just when you see that women give Birth. I don't know if men realize who we really are.
Furthermore I know that today things change but there are some men who stile consider women inferior and we can find this inequalities in salaries, work access, sport, daily life....
I hope that in few years this inequalities will disappear and to achieve fair equality around the world as it should be.

  3. Hi everyone !
To begin with, I find this topic really interesting since inequalities in our world are becoming a major and developping plague of the twenty-first century. Rich are getting richer, power is more and more concentrated in a few hands.
Do I think that talking about this issue can make move the things forward ?
No doubt about that, we obviously have to talk about inequalities, otherwise no change can be possible. If no one talks or cares about women situation in some countries, how could we help them ? If no one knows about starving children in some countries, there wouldn’t be organisations such as UNICEF to help them. Here, we see how big is the importance of talking about inequalities. We need to spread awareness.
On the other hand, I’ve read an article in « The Guardian » that depicts people perception of inequalities in their own country. Even if the topic of inequalities is widely debated, the author proves that people are poorly conscious of actual inequalities.
(I copied a link at the end of my post for you to see the video, it is astonishing ).
It underlines the fact that people are not fully aware about inequalities.

In my opinion, we should continue to talk about inequalities, and continue trying to stop them, even if I have never been the witness or the victim of such inequalities.

  4. hello everyone,

As for me, inequalities should not longer exist at this time. But unhappily, it still does. However, to answer to Lola, the fact that men are "superiors" to women came from the birth of the earth. What I mean is, since the prehistory, it was the men that went away and risked their lives to get food and meat for their women and children. Indeed, also in the animal kingdom it is the men that fight together to get the privilege of getting a female and make her pregnant. They also fight to get food. But there are some exceptions, for instance with lions. It is the lioness that fight and go away to get food for the animal's king.
To put it all in a nutshell, I think that yes, inequalities shouldn't exist by now in ours societies, but I understand why it takes so long to the situation to change because it has been so long since the men are superior to women.

  5. Hi everyone,

I want to start off by saying that this subject is very interesting and important especially in our society nowadays.
There are different categories in what we call "inequalities", there are the ones that include gender, race, money and much more.

We ignore these because we think that our society today is much better than what it used to be like which is true. But that doesn't change the fact that even if our society is different, our lives are different, women have more rights, colored skin isn't considered being a crime anymore, inequalities still exist in today's world.

Women are not considered at the same level as men, in some countries they are constantly used as slaves and they have to get married and have children at an extremely young age.

The same goes for black people, in the US life used to be horrible, we all know about different white supremacists organisation (such as the KKK) that made their life a living hell by burning their houses, killing them and much more, but a lot of people still consider them inferior to white people.

This is the truth, life is not perfect, the years go by and some things change some don't and as of today, in 2018, the world is still filled with inequalities that do not have their place in this world.

  6. Hello !

    - Inequality has become a hot topic since the global economic downturn highlighted the stark differences between rich and poor. Inequality is such a big problem in our society and we have to fight against it. But are inequalities overrated or is it important to talk about them?

    - First of all, inequality is an unfair situation in which some people have more rights or better opportunities than other people. Inequality is a fundamental part of the capitalist system, at least as viewed by economists.
    - As for me, it is important to talk about it because nowadays too much people are linked with this situation. In fact, there are inequalities at school, in the professional life. For instance the difference between men and women's salaries. Or also in other culture like in India when women have no choice to marry with the man that they loved. Indeed, women are not considered at the same level as men, in some countries they are constantly used as slaves like Anne Rose perfectly said.
    - Finally, I am aware that it is very difficult to change mentalities but I hope that we will continue to fight against inequalities, even if it is impossible to live in a world of equality.

  7. Hi everyone,
To my mind, it is obvious that we have and we need to talk about inequalities because like everyoby said, either they are due to gender, money or color of the skin, they still exist in our current society.

First of all, talking about inequalities allows people to be aware of them. Recently we have seen that women raised there voices to denounce sexual harassment. Indeed, millions of women shared their own experience with the hashtags : #MeeToo in the USA or #BalanceTonPorc in France. Social change often starts with a grass roots movement and if transgressions are seen to go unremarked or unpunished, they will continue.
Then, like Sky said, many associations alert the general public to inequalities and I think they have a key role. For instance, the movement « Black lives matter » denounces racial discrimination by the American police. We should be aware of the problems in our society if we want to fix them, that's why it is very important to talk about inequalities.

Finally, I haven't been victim of discrimination but I know the gap persists between some categories of the society and silence is a form of complicity. However, nowadays I think that we talk more and more about inequalities which makes me optimistic for the future.

  8. Hello everybody!
First of all, the subject of inequality is a very important subject that should not be overlooked because for me everyone should have the same rights. It is not normal for some people to "roll over" wealth while others are wiped out by poverty. I also think that even though it's a very important topic, it's perhaps over-estimating because there are more serious problems in the world like terrorism ...
To conclude, I have never been a victim of inequality and, apart from class discussions on inequality, no one has told me about it.

  9. Hi everyone !

As far as I'm concerned, I'm very comitted about equality, because I think no one should feel different than the society he belongs in. Plus, the appareance of someone doesn't proove that he is evil, unlikeable and that you shouldn't conform to him.
Today we are in a world which fights a lot for equality, but differences still remain. The most obvious ones are racism, homophobia and sexism. Lots of people suffer from that, for example to get a job, and to my point of view people should be accepted in a company for their quality of work and not for their personnal life of physical attributes. Talking about inequalities between men and women, it was recently (on the 8th of march) the international women's day. The goal is to fight for rights equalities like same salaries than men. This year, it was also a day to remind that women often suffer from sexual abuse and harrasment, and this is why famous movement like #Time'sUp and #MeToo were created. This is a great initiative to establish a movement for equality, and that remains people to act nicely with EVERYONE.
To conclude this part, I think we talk a lot about inequalities, but sadly we don't react enough, as they persist.

Secondly, I have never been a victim of inequality but some of my friends have. For example last year I came to summer school, and I met a gay friend. He told me that he couldn't tell his family or he would be rejected from his house. I think this is very sad because you don't choose who you are, and if he is happy as a gay boy his family should be happy for him too...
To conclude, I believe that inequalities are an important problem in our society, and I hope someday it will completely disappear.

  10. Hello everyone!
First of all, I am in section economics and social. In class, de started to talk about chances inequalities at school. And we understand that some people were born with inequalities. As far as I'm concerned I have never been victim of any inequalities. However some friends of mine are victims of school inequalities. Sometimes we talk about it between us but they do not want to tell their experience to anyone else. On one hand I understand their attitude: they do not want people's pity. On the other hand I think they should talk to someone who could do something for them.
That's why we should talk when there are inequalities. Because if we do not talk inequalities will continue during our entire life. Moreover inequalities should not be an overrated topic.

  12. Hello,

Gender inequality is something we need to be concerned about, and I think that addressing it in the classroom is a good thing to sensitize this generation who will become the men and women of tomorrow. For example, women's wage income is 24% lower than that of men in 2014, or also women have lower retirement entitlements of 42% because of career differences and retire on average for one year later than men.

As a woman I have never been the victim of inequality with a man even though I think it's because I'm not yet integrate the world of work. Finally, I think we must continue to fight against inequalities even if it takes time and even if we will never be safe from inequalities and because change the mindset of someone is difficult

Here are two links to sites that talk about inequalities:

  13. Hello everybody,
To my mind, inequalities is something important. Women are principally victims of this thing and since many years. First of all I would like to say I can't stand of inequalities because it's unfair. For example, everybody knows gender inequality. During a long time, women couldn't work, do the same sport as men, couldn't wear jean and so on...
After fighting, women won autonomy, laws and they were in capacity to do more thing than before. However there is yet some inequalities in our society as stereotype and so on.
Secondly some event like the women's day, protest can make this cause progressing and change help to change these type of inequalities.
Lastly, I can say that I was victim of inequality and many times. For example, last summer I sought for having a job and my first choice it was to work in a society of yatch and I could worked with my age. But the director refused because I was a girl and "a girl isn't strong enough". It made me very angry. And it just one example.
To conclude I was already a victim of inequality and it exists yet but we have to fight against because it is important.

  14. Hello everybody!
To begin with, I find it very good to speak about inequalities because this issue is particularly known nowadays.
First, I would like to talk about the "#me too" movement because it looks like a revolution to me. Indeed, this movement started when an American actress accused a well known producer of sexual harassment. She spoke up in the name of several actresses, all victims of the same predator. At this point it time, this movement is revolutionary because it enables victims, especially women, to denounce all types of abuse.
Then, I would like to say that I had never been a victim of an inequality nor did I witness one. However I am aware of this problem thanks to a video channel on youtube called "Cam Clash". It shows a group made of 5 to 7 people who highlight everyday harassment in the parisian metro. They are fighting for denouncing people who sticks against others in a sexual way. To my point of view it's a horrible act, sadlly there are more and more. Fortunately, actions like this help us understand and anticipate inequalities based on gender, religion, skin color...
To put it in a nutshell, we can acknowledge that it's a current subject and that we talk about it like never before. It's very good to denounce these abuses in order to eradicate them. Let's hope that spreading awareness will make it an overrated subject.

  15. Hi everyone,

Before we start, it is important to underline that the USA is definitely the country we know the most about (apart from France). Indeed, we learn about America in every single way (economic, political, social, environmental...). As a result, we have such a knowledge that we are quite able to say what we think about this country.

First of all, although the USA is the most powerful and influential country in the world, we should not forget that America detains huge debts and maintains the biggest inequalities within its society.
For instance, just think about Health Care system in America. Do you think that health is the matter of only rich people? I personally don't think so. In the same way, is the access of education equal for everyone? I don't think so either. Those social inequalities take up an important place in American society and most of the time, lead to violence, discrimination and racism. Indeed, the reality of "the Melting Pot" is more a "Salad Bowl" where racial conceptions of White America subsist.

Notwithstanding, we can't deny the fact that the USA dominates other countries in many domains such as in technology, research and development, sciences, space and so on. Furthermore, American culture is spread all over the world through social networks. Our culture is "americanized" as our lifestyle is inspired by the American one: food, movie, music, and way to dress...

To sum up, I have mixed feelings about the USA. It doesn't appear to me as a nightmare nor as a dream country.

  16. Women are the ones who suffer the most from the real inequalities that affect the world. Whether on wage inequality, gender inequality or unequal opportunities, women are among those most affected by these inequalities.
Now, let's see how they result ...
First, know that a woman is more intelligent than a man.
A study demonstrate that women were more successful in schooling than men ...
So, how is it that there is, first, more women occupying a less important position than men, and that there is, second, a difference between the salary of a man and a woman ? Well, I don't know.
Perhaps, because we think that a woman will take maternity leave and therefore, that she will be less present at her work than a man ...
Or, it's just us who are really stupid to think that and so, we should try to do something to change the mentality of the world to finally have, one day, a perfect equality between men and women or rather women and men.
But the world is stupid, stressful and ruthless so, in my opinion, it will never change or only then, when we will be not there and this blog will not exist anymore ...
    Thanks for reading.

  18. Hello,
I think it's important to talk about inequalities because they make the society progress. Like we saw with the US- M.L.King with his supporters protested against segregation (so against inequalities) and got a lot of rights (voting...). That's a racial inequality. Let's see an other example : women inequalities. There is a lot of sexism today even if the situation is progress. There is a lot of feminist demonstrations which made the laws change.
In conclusion, it is important to talk about the inequalities to make the society better.

  19. Hi everybody !

As far as I am concerned, I do think that inequalities is a major subject and that there is a need to speak about it, otherwise nobody knows what happens in this field here and then. Also, talking about inequalities is the only way to make things move forward and find solutions.
I think about the « Me-too » movement which enabled, for sure, to calm down powerful men to abuse women, by encouraging women to speak up about sexual assaults.
Furthermore, as for me, speaking about inequalities within men and women in the working world, such as wages, will help stopping the great differences that still exist.
All in all, even if I have never been a victim or a witness of inequalities, in my opinion we should keep talking about them in order to stop or at least reduce them !
