your opinion about the USA

After learning so much about the USA, are you still attracted to it ? Would you say it's country of DREAM or NIGHTMARE ?

  1. Hey Hadil,

It is true to say that we learn quite a lot about the USA in many stuff like in English class (of course !) , in history and geography lessons and even in other language classes. The USA have a substantial influence over the whole world but I wouldn't qualify it as a dream or a nightmare. As for me even before I've learned so much about the USA that was not my travelling goal. I perfectly understand that the USA contain the most famous celebrities nevertheless this country don't attract me so much for it.
However one schould not forget that the USA have also a part of history in some regions . In my opinion the USA let themselve submerge by all this "speck". It's a shame that the part of history of this country is not so well-known and highlighted
But there are good grounds to say that this country cannot be got round. So much people are inspired by this great power. Therefore we can't say it's either a dream or a nightmare.

  2. Hello everyone!

First of all I have learnt a lot of things about the USA History. As far as I'm concerned there are new things that I learnt in class like the story of Claudette Colvin in 1955 or the fact that Martin Luther King has helpt Rosa Parks against discrimination. Indeed I think that the USA got a lot of History, culture and a very mixed population so I'm attracted by this side of USA. However there is still a lot of guns in this country like if it's normal to get one. Then, I'm afraid by this and there is also still racism in this country like young Black men killed by White officers. So this country get a strong experience of racism. As a result, I'm not so attracted anymore by the USA also because there is Donald Trump as president. So, it can be a country of nightmare or a country of dream.

  3. Hi,
First ,I meanly learn about segragation in USA . I learn that before black people were mistreated and people were jugded by there skin colors . It was a frightening period however now thanks to some famous people like Martin Luther King Jr or Rosa Park these injustices does not exist anymore, and I enjoy about that . Although its right to say that long time ago America was scene of unbelieveble violence, horrible things happened, and injustice was unlivable (for black people )so we can say that before America was a nightmare. I'm still attracted by this place because later I would like travel, I heard of several places to visit like Niagara falls or Brooklyn bridge. Some of these places are incredible to me ,to my mind every people should see it one day in his life ,these places makes this country a dream. Moreover I think that USA is different of France which other culture ,a other way to live . I have good grounds to say that America so USA had changed but no one should forget horrors events who happened before . Finally I can say that America is a country to prep.

  4. Hello everybody,

First, I’d like to tell you that we learnt a lot about America during class.

America is a country that people qualify as a country where we can have more money, a bigger house, more rights, more justice… It is the « American Dream » which appeared in the 20th century. People dreamed about equal justice, like Martin Luther King Jr. in his speech « I have a dream », who wanted the abolishment of segregation. After a long fight, segregation was finally abolished. A constitutional paragraph is about happiness and it is written that everyone has the right to be happy.
But America is also a country of nightmare, because segregated people like Afro-American had to stand up for their rights wich isn’t normal because everyone should be equal. They had to demonstrate and protect themselves against discrimination and racist people. They were segregated and had less rights : they could not vote and some were prevented from attending school, like Carlotta Walls Lanier and Melba Patillo Beals, and seven other students in Little Rock, Arkansas. Also, there are still white supremacists who are racist in America.

So I think that America is both a country of dream and nightmare. I’m attracted to it for it’s history and also because of landscapes like the Niagara Falls or the Mount Rushmore, but I’m afraid that some politicians are still racist.

  5. Hi everyone!

First of all, I find this subject very interesting because I have been asking myself about whether or not I would like to go to the US now that Donald Trump was elected president.
To begin with, I am still attracted to the United States, at least some of the cities, especially San Fransisco, San Diego, New York, Hollywood... But I don't feel like going there for the moment and if I would be comfortable walking on the streets of a place not everybody is welcome because of their ethny.
However, I feel like so many places are currently in this case. I don't feel that everybody is very welcome in every place of Nice, and you could be judged by some people because of the way you look.
Moreover, you shouldn't judge a country and people who live in it because of their president. Although they voted for this person, it doesn't mean that they agree with everything this person says and maybe it was a vote of rebellion. I am not defending people voting for Donald Trump but I just feel that we are not able to judge especially since the last French election when Marine LePen was almost elected.
To conclude, I don't think we could qualify this country a dream or a nightmare because nothing is perfect and everything has its qualities and its falses.

  6. Hi everyone!
This year, I have really learnt about the USA’s story with my english class. I discover the segregation, the racism between black and white people, the white people’s violence and all the injustice there was. Now, I think I don’t have the same point of view about this country but our country isn’t perfect too. Of course, I am still attracted to it and I really appreciate to visit the USA but when I will be free to travel, I would like to visit India, Japan or Brazil.
I don’t think it’s country of nightmare because the society has evolved and there is not some violence between black and white people like in the 19s but I don’t think it’s country of dream. The country has some problems actually and the system isn’t perfect…
So, to my mind, USA is a great country which I will really enjoy to visit.

  7. Hi everyone !

Many people want to go to the USA in search of a better lifestyle. The American Dream is the belief that anyone, regardless of where they were born or what class they were born into, can become successful in a society where upward mobility is possible for everyone.

Firstly, The USA attracts many people because of their wealth, beautiful landscapes, famous cities, landmarks...People go there to find jobs so they can be able to earn lots of money and become successful in life. However, people end up being disappointed. As a matter of fact, life is actually extremely hard in The USA and most people who went there in search of a better life end up returning to there own country. This is majorly the consequences of the still present racism and discrimination that you can find which makes it harder for different ethnics to integrate society which has been recently intensified by Trump. For example, nowadays, the rate of Mexicans coming out of the States is higher than the rate of Mexicans going in.

To put it all in a nutshell, the American Dream is achieved through sacrifice, risk-taking and hard work, not by chance. Therefore I don’t think one should go to the States and expect success without doing anything because one will probably be disappointed more than anything. In my opinion, I don’t want to go work in The USA but I still think it’s an attractive place where you can spend memorable holidays. Therefore, I can’t say it’s a country of nightmares yet I can’t say either that it’s a country of dreams.

  8. Hello !

    - Previously, the Usa was the perfect country to realise your “american dream”, people with nice cars, enormous houses and new technologies. But since the terrorist attack in 2001, people look at the Usa differently and people feel a certain insecurity. Is America still attracted? - First of all, when I was young I thought that everyone lived the american dream with no poverty but when I went to Miami, NewYork and Washington I realised that it wasn't easy for all citizens. In fact, lot of homeless were alone, walking around the street and nobody can help her. Moreover, Health care in Usa is a real problem because poor people cannot be cure and it increases inequalities. - Nowadays, lot of people say that every aspect of the American dream is now more easily found in Canada and we talk about the “Canadian dream”. A serious study explains that Canadians as the 6th happiest people in the world, while Americans lag behind at 13th.
    - To sum up, in USA it's easy to make money when you are already rich so that you live the “american dream” but it can be a real nightmare if you haven't got enough money to live.

  9. Hello everybody !
To start with, my very first feeling about the USA is that I am very much attracted to this country and I would love to go there. I am dying to visit very big mythic cities such as NY city, Chicago, Los Angeles with Hollywood studios, San Francisco, Miami and its beaches. Moreover, I would love to attend a musical in NY such as Mamamia, I'm sure it must be great !
Furthermore, I would be very intereted to visit the National Parks, such as yiosemity or yellowstone park, in order to observe wild animals evolving in the nature and all kind of vegetation like Trees.
Nevertheless, on the other hand, the social climate, consequently to Donald Trump's election, must be difficult and I'm not sure I could stand the insecure feeling people from other ethnies must have when living there.
To conclude, I find it difficult to say wether it's a country of dream or nightmare. It depends on everyone's situation.

  11. Hi!
First of all we all have an opinion on America as it is the most powerful country in the world. However, opinions are contrasted.
To begin with, we have heard about the « American dream », American’s beings, culture... every student wants to go to the USA because he thinks he can do whatever he wants, find a job, have a better life no matter where he comes from. Nevertheless reality is not as wonderful. America is a country with lot of inequalities and discrimination. Indeed, the beautiful shops and avenues hide a dark place. The health system is extremely unfair, most people have not access to medical care because they don’t have enough money, and it is quite the same for communication, they cannot have the internet because of their poverty.
Racism is also a big issue in the USA, besides, with Donald Trump this problem won’t be solved, it will be worse.
To sum up, I could not say America is a country of nightmare because it has some qualities that I cannot forget, for instance his famous cities, technologies and power of knowledge. However, it is true that some aspect of the country are disastrous. To my mind, I guess it’s easier to live in the USA when you are already American or when you are able to afford fees and services because it is expensive.

But is it really a country of nightmare? I think that in every country big mistakes were made in just as USA. According to me we can't say that a country is dream or nightmare because like people countries have good and bad sides although some of their acts can't be forgiven. Nevertheless I'm still attracted to it because of its history which is so interesting. Emilie Struelens 1erS5

  13. Hello! Are you ok ?

In the old day, The USA was the perfect country to realize the «American dream» but now, it's clearly different. The USA is a country with a lot of memories, culture, and particularly racism's memories. It's was the biggest powerful country formerly especially through the second world war. I know that it isn't neither the same period nor the same issues; but to my mind, the USA isn't the same then before. We see it well. It's true I was so much attracted to the USA even if I knew the previous experiences, but little by little my enthusiasm became small each time I became aware of the violence whose Black people were victims. So, I can't say that it's a country of nightmare or dream. Each country have his faults and his qualities but I think the «American dream» is, from now on, a myth.

  14. Hello,
First of all I would like to say that I studied a lot of things in English class on this topic. America is a dream country like a nightmare country
At first, the events that characterizes America as a nightmare country is the fact that black people have not had the same right as white people, an injustice, violence, horrible moments and actions, that the same was true for Mexicans. Now that Donald Trump is the president, that complicates things.
Secondly, the events that characterize America as a dream country is the fact that everyone says that in America our dreams can come true, as we can see with singers, actors, athletes ... but there is also the taste to learn another culture (food, tradition) and language.
I can not say America is a dream country or a nightmare because it is both at the same time.
Even if this country has disadvantages, I would love to go there.

  15. Hi everyone !

First, I'd like to say that this year we learnt a lot about american culture and history, and specially about segregation against afro-americans, as they had to fight to get the same rights as white people.
To continue, I think the USA is considered as a dream country because people can realize anything they want, like being actor or singer and become famous. Plus, at this time, the USA is the most powerful country and american culture is spread all over the world : there are fast-food in lots of countries, american celebrities are known everywhere and a few clothing brands are famous (like Victoria's Secret or Hollister). Furthermore, the USA is very attractive to visit for its diversity of landscapes (for example, you have beaches in Florida, deserts in Nevada, geysers in Utah...), and there are also beautiful cities like New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles where you can discover famous monuments.
However, dangerous acts have also happened in the USA and have frightened lots of people. In the past, black and white people didn't have the same rights, there was segregation and racism, and this is very shocking because today this type of acts is considered shameful. To continue, the attacks in 2001 scared the whole world, and disturbed every american. Today we still talk about the crash and the fall of the two towers. After, there are laws that allow people to carry weapons, apparently in a way to defend themselves, but this just provoked killing and attacks. For example, recently a student arrived in a school and murdered other students (and it's not the first time this type of acts happen). Finally, a few years ago, the president Donald Trump was elected, yet he is not capable to lead this country, and that brang more problems.

To conclude, in my opinion, America is a country of dream but also of nightmare. I wouldn't like to live there as the culture is too big and impressive for me, but I can understand people are attracted to this country.

  17. Hi everyone !

I would like to say that I learnt a lot of things about USA because before I didn't expect to know that there were so many things that happened during the segregation and the civil rights that were not given to everyone because of their color of the skin. And personally I feel that this is very courageous to show to the government that they are not respecting all the human rights and that they need to learn about equality. United States are usually reference to parties, spring breaks, sun and Los Angeles and people that start from nothing can become very famous so I can say that everything is possible in this country, for example recently a singer called Cardi B was discovered and became very rich in only one year she became a very famous person and a huge rapper and she is making lot of money but she was very poor and she grew up in The Bronx like Jennifer Lopez and many other rich people. So on one side I think that there are lots of models of American dream but when we go back in the past we can't forget how black people were treated and how men like Martin Luther King changed the world and especially USA.

To conclude, I can say that the good sides are as important as bad sides in this country.

  19. Hello,

First, I think that USA will always be a dream for many people despite the fact that there are many inequalities : it’s the « American dream ». Furthermore, it is not only in America that we can find negative points. There is no country without problems and with a perfect system because it depends on the person who governs but also on the people who live there.

So no I don’t think America is a nightmare country but a dream country, yes

We have learnt lot of things in class about the USA. Its culture and history are very rich and interesting, so i really like it. But i think the life in USA is not a dream like many people think, because if we look at the statistics we can understand that that is really not a dream. The first the medecine there is very expensive. Then the salary is low and there are many terrorist attacks. However in USA we have lot of jobs specially for engineers.

  21. Hello everybody,
First, I would like to tell you that we've learnt a lot in class about the USA's culture or history. But with all we know now, I don't really know if this country is a country of dream or nightmare.
On the one hand, the USA remains a country with a big reputation. For foreigners, we have the feeling that everything there is big or breathtaking, and that everything is possible. Moreover, the main cities of this country like New York, Los Angeles or San Francisco are still impressoning and make the rest of world dreaming about them. Then, it's a place where the culture like music, arts, or dance, are in the first place. Finally, I think that the USA is a great destination to see. We have a lot of things to visit and to learn.
For those reasons, the USA are an attractive country, and so a country of dreams.

On the other hand, however, the USA's history is not as attractive as his culture. Indeed, what we've learnt about Afro-Americans is in contradiction with what the USA looks like. The fact that a lot people had to fight for civils rights, that they had to suffer violence make the USA a country of nightmare.

  22. Hello everyone !

I would like to talk about the USA. In fact, we have learnt a lot of things about this country: we have studied its culture, history and past. About the question on the dream and the nightmare, I think that the country was seen like an American dream, but today, it is much a nightmare than a dream. The American dream is past. Many years ago, the USA was a dream where all were possible: it was the country of many possibilities. A lot of people came from over the world with no money to have a new life: They believed in that American dream. Sometimes, it was true: some people succeed like many celebrities who were poor, and became rich and famous. In reality, the dream is just an image and the true side of the USA is darker than we think. Indeed, since the years 2000, there is the economic crisis. There is still segregation of black and white people. And now, since the twins towers attack of 2001, we have also the terrorism which is a big problem of all over the world. We mentioned all the time on TV, people who had nothing, and came to the USA and became rich, but there are also people who were rich and became poor overnight. Actually, there are 43 million persons considered as poor persons.

To conclude, I think the American dream was just an illusion and a past image. However, it is still an attracting country that I would visit.

  23. The United States is fascinating the whole world with it’s modern cites and famous shops, that is why alomost everybody dream to visit this famous contry. But is it really as great as they think ? That is a tough question considering the recent events that happened in there.
First the rascism is still very present, in particulary on black people by police officers who benefit from their power to do what they want even if it is illegal and immoral. There is a lot of story of black people who were assult or even kill for no reason by the police officers, who thanks to their statut, never had any trouble with the justice.
Then, their is a real problem with arms which are allowed to easly to everyone. That increase the violence a lot because by agreeing of giving people arms, nothing stop them to shoot someone in a moment of insanity. That is why their is to many horrible massacre in schools for example, when disturbed adolescents kill their friends with their parent’s gun. If they couldn’t get a gun as easily, it would have probably never happened.
However even if their is many problem in the USA, it stay a beautiful country with an important economic activity and a rich music and cinematographic culture which is spread all over the world.
As far as I am concerned I still want visit the USA. It stay for me a dream to go there. But considering the thing that happen in this country nowadays, I wouldn’t live there.

  24. Hello everyone!

First of all, I want to say that the USA is, in general, a country of dream for many people because, we all know that the USA has a beautiful and amazing history (all the fights that american people made to change the country, to be heard and live in a better way, like for example racism and discrimination which were set up in the USA). The landscape in the USA, like for example in Los Angeles is just beautiful. When we think about the USA, we can think about Hollywood and all actors and actress.

But, in my opinion, the USA is a country of nightmare because, even if many people fought against racism, they are people who are racist, and I personally don't get it. Then, in the USA, every American can have a gun, because of "their safety". But I think that it's a serious problem because it caused many problems (some people died because they argued with the one's who killed them) and, until now, I never heard that someone use her/his gun for her/his "safety".

Finally, I think, like many other people, that the USA is a country of dream thanks to beautiful and amazing landscapes, whatever the city of the country. But, the USA has many desavantages which are the way that they use guns in a bad way, not for a great reason or because it's very important. So, the USA can be a country of dream for someone, and a country of nightmare for an other.
