  1. Hello everyone,

In 1960, Harper Lee wrote « To Kill a Mockingbird ». The book received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

In the novel, there is a lot of discrimination: racism, social discrimination, etc. Harper Lee opposes discrimination in Alabama during the 1930s and also injustice. The State assumption is that every black people are criminals. The author wants to deliver the message that this assumption is completely wrong. Harper Lee chose that title because it means that it is bad and wrong to hurt nice, kind, and more important, innocent people.
There isn’t just one mockingbird in this novel. I think that Tom Robinson is a mockingbird, because he’s innocent. He is unfairly accused of raping Mayella Ewell, but he didn’t. It is actually Mayella’s father who punched her in the face, threatening to kill her because she tried to seduce Tom. Boo Radley is also a mockingbird because he is kind. Children spread rumors on him, like he stabbed his father. They are afraid of him, but he is actually nice : he helped Jem and Scout when they were chased after by Bob Ewell.

To my mind, Harper Lee chose that title because in the novel people hurt Tom and Boo who are innocent and kind. She wants to deliver the message that it’s wrong.

    1. Hello, I made a mistake : "every black people" isn't correct, it is "every black person".

  2. As for me, in Harper Lee's novel, the mockingbird symbolizes a certain innocence.
To my mind, the author wanted to show that Tom Robinson himself is a “mockingbird”. Innocent of the crime for which he is tried, he has to face the evil of hatred simply because of the color of his skin.
As a result, the title of the novel comes to reinforce the lesson of the story: understand others before judging them and don't harm those who have done no harm.

  3. Hi everyone !
Harper Lee wrote To kill a mockingbird in 1960. This book shows a little city, Maycomb in Alabama in 1932 during the Great Depression where racism and inequality are present. The title comes from the famous proverb « It’s a sin to kill a mockingbird». The image of the Mockingbird is present throughout the book to underline the injustice to hurt innocent people and people without defense. So, I think that The mockingbird is Tom Robinson but it can be also Boo Radley. In fact,Tom Robinson is a young black man who is accused of raping Mayella Ewell just because of his skin colour and not for his acts. This accusation shows segregation and racism in southern states in thirties. Boo Radley can also be The Mockingbird because he is innocent and Scout, Jem and Dill imagine the worst things about him even if he is asked nothing and he annoys anyone.

  4. Harper Lee wrote in 1960 a novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, which received Pulitzer Prize one year later. I'm going to tell you why did Harper Lee choose this title for her book and then give you my opinion about who is the Mickingbird.

At one time of the vel, Atticus (Scout and Jem's father and Tom Robinson's lawyer) explains that to kill a mockingbird was a sin because this kind of bird wasn't dangerous and all they do was singing. Thereby they didn't have to be killed because it's like killing the innocence. Then Atticus forbade his son to do it with his riffle.
We can find this metaphor throught the character of Tom Robinson. Actually, he was accused of a crime he did'nt do, so he was innocent and he was all the same sentenced by the court. Besides, he had been assassinated subsequently in the jail where he was detained.

Finally, Harper Lee choose To Kill a Mockingbird as the title of the book to represent innocence. In my opinion, she represented this image throught the character of Tom Robinson who was accused whereas he was innocent.

    1. Sorry, I made some mistakes: it's "novel" instead of "vel", "all they do is to sing" instead of "all they do was singing", "they shouldn't be killed" instead of "they didn't have to be killed", "Mockingbird" instead "Mickingbird" and it's "through" instead of "throught".

  5. Hello everyone,
I'm going to talk with you about the title of a book we read in class this year: "To Kill a Mockingbird". "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a book written by Haper Lee in 1960 who wan a Pulitzer Prize in 1961. This book is about the trial of Tom Robinson who is a back man accused of rapping on a white girl Mayella Ewell in the small city of Maycomb in Alabama. To my mind Haper Lee chose te title "To Kill a Mockingbird " to highlight an injustice and an horrible act. A mockingbird represents a kind, nice and innocent bird who never make something wrong and who never hurts someone so to kill a mockingbird is something really cruel and unfair. In the book we can associate the mockingbird with Tom Robinson who is wrongly convict and killed to underline this horrible and injuste act.

  7. Hi everyone,

First of all, To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel written by Harper Lee. This book became a unmissable work in the American litterature.

Second, I think Harper Lee chose to name her book "To Kill a Mockingbird", because the mockingbird is a bird really different of other birds. He have something special because he is a good "singer" but he imitate other birdsong with "mocking".

Third, to my mind, there are two mocking birds in the novel. There are Tom Robinson, an innocent accused of raping, and Boo (Arthur Radley) who is a neighboor outside the society of Maycomb, an original man.
I think the "Mockingbirds" are characters used by Harper Lee to denounce a cause like the discrimination and the segregation. 124

To conclude, in the book, Atticus said that it's a sin to kill a mockingbird. I think Atticus said that because Mockingbirds (metaphor with people outside the society) are differents of others birds but they bring good things like their songs (metaphor with the qualities of people).

  8. Hi everyone,
To my mind Harper Lee choose « To Kill a Mockingbird » as the title for the book because it carries a great symbolic in the book.
In this story, where people are destroyed by evil, the mockingbird represent the idea of innocence. Throughout the book, a number of characters (Jem, Tom Robinson, Dill, Boo Radley, Mr. Maymond ) can be identified as mockingbirds, innocents who have been injured or destroyed through contact with evil.
In addition, this connection between the novel's title and its main theme is made explicit several times in the novel : after Tom Robinson was shot, Mr. Underwood compares his death to “the senseless slaughter of songbirds”, and at the end of he book Scout thinks that hurting Boo Radley would be like “shooting a mockingbird”.
Finally, Jem and Scout's last name is Finch (another type of small bird) indicates that they are particularly vulnerable in the racist world of Maycomb.
