Do you think there are limits to freedom of expression?

  1. Hello,
In my opinion, there are some limits to freedom of expression. Indeed, concerning freedom of expression, French law prohibits insults and defamation but also racism or homophobia. For instance, a newspaper article containing racist remarks is not allowed in France.

  2. Hello,
It seems to me that there are limits to freedom of expression.Indeed, everyone should have the right to express himself or herself but freedom of expression can hurt other communities or increase divisions of a society. Some opinions can be full of hatred and it is dangerous. To conclude, everyone should express him or her opinion but with respect of each other. This respect is the limit of freedom of expression.

  3. Hello!!!
Although you have freedom of expression, you also have a duty to behave responsibly and to respect other people’s rights.
Public authorities may restrict this right if they can show that their action is lawful, necessary and proportionate in order to:
For instance : - protect national security, territorial integrity (the borders of the state) or public safety
    - prevent disorder or crime
    - protect health or morals
    - maintain the authority and impartiality of judges
An authority may be allowed to restrict your freedom of expression if, for example, you express views that encourage racial or religious hatred.
However, the relevant public authority must show that the restriction is ‘proportionate’, in other words that it is appropriate and no more than necessary to address the issue concerned.
    Thank you for reading me!

  4. Freedom Expression has always been a source of polemics and troubles, as we all recall the tragic "Charlie Hebdo" attacks, back in 2015. People must not say outloud whatever passes in their minds to then take refuge behind freedom expression. However, this freedom is primordial to a healthy democracy, and cannot be deleted. They must respect their fellows as well as these ones must not overreact when they feel offended by one's declarations.

  5. Hello,
I think that freedom of expression has limits: as it is often said, one's freedom ends where another's begins. So it is important to respect each other, that is to say, not to insult someone or to provoke for example. So it is the right of every person to think as they wish and to be able to express their opinions without offending others.

  6. Hello,
In my opinion, there are limits to freedom of expression. Effectively, even if it is one of the most important purpose of a democratic government to allows citizens to express their opinion, thoughts, beliefs, ideas... in all fields, I think we must make good use of this right. We have not this right to said whatever we want without thinking about the impact it can have on people.
A lot of inappropriate uses of freedom of expression show that this right has limits. For instance, one week ago the singer Hoshi was outraged by Fabien Lecoeuvre's shocking comment on her physical appearance. F.Lecoeuvre didn't make good use of freedom of expression. He said shocking, humiliating, horrible words for Hoshi, for her public but also for women. For me, he should have been deprived of freedom
of expression, because it was not acceptable to hear his comment.
So, as this example shows, freedom of expression has obviously some limits. We have the opportunity to express ourselves freely, it's to move society forward, not to weaken it.

  7. Freedom of expression is a right that we should all be entitled to have. It is what allows us to voice freely our opinions and to interact with other people without fear of being repressed for our beliefs. Although freedom of expression exists, there are still limits that one should not cross. You shouldn't, for instance, insult other people and swear at them because you dislike or hate them. That is just plainly disrespectful and shouldn't be allowed. Opinions that hurt or disrespects a group of people, or anything, really, should not be voiced and kept to themselves. For example, things such as racism, body-shaming and so on are considered dreadful in our society. To conclude: Yes, there are limits to freedom of expression.

  8. Hello,

In my opinion i think freedom of expression is important in a country. Because it allows the free circulation of ideas of each one which can lead to innovations for example.
However, we can observe that this one has limits such as incitement to discrimination, hatred, violence or segregation against others.

  9. Hello,
In my opinion, there are limits to freedom of expression. Indeed, even if it is one of the most important purposes of a Democratic State, like the France's one, to permit people to freely express their opinions, their thoughts, their beliefs..., I believe that we should make good use of this freedom. Moreover, we don't have this right to say what we want without thinking about the impact it can have on people/community. Indeed, everyone should have the right to express themselves but freedom of expression can hurt other communities.
To conclude, everyone should express their opinion but with respect for each other. So I think that the limit of freedom of expression is respect

  10. In our country, freedom of expression is a fundamental freedom. Thus, everyone has the right to have his or her own opinion and ideas and to express them by any means and in any format. However, there must be limits to this freedom to protect people. These limits serve to protect people from defamation, insult, invasion of privacy, provocation to discrimination, hatred or violence. So yes, there are limits to freedom of expression that must not be violated or you will be punished.

  11. Today we are chanced to have freedom of expression since the declaration of human rights.
We have the right to think, to write, to say what we want, but all this with respect for others and for the law.
But this freedom has limits. In France, when giving your opinion in public, there are rules to follow, the most important is not to harm others privacy and image rights of others.
So you must not insult, say defamatory remarks, say forbidden things (racial, religious, ethnic hatred ...)

  13. In my opinion, there are many limits to the freedom of expression indeed we all live in a democracy which offers us a freedom of expression in particular in France which is not always the case in other countries. Moreover, in France the freedom of expression allows citizens to express their opinion, their thoughts, their beliefs, their ideas... but there are limits to this freedom of expression indeed the freedom of expression can have limits on various points such as legal, moral, social and political.
In conclusion, everyone should have the right to express themselves, but freedom of expression can harm other communities or increase divisions in a society. Therefore, we must respect each other and live in respect and peace.

  14. Freedom of speech is a principle that supports the freedom of an individual or a community to articulate their opinions and ideas without fear of retaliation, censorship, or legal sanction. That’s why, at first we might think that they are not limits to such a principle, that anyone can say what they want. However, that is not necessarily the case given that your right to free speech is limited by where you are, what you say, and how you say it. For example, obscenity is not protected by the Constitution, you can be prosecuted for lying under oath in court, you can’t make offensive remarks or personal insults that would immediately lead to a fight, you don’t have the right to say whatever you want in someone else’s home or other private setting. Finally, while at school, students also have limited rights of free speech.

  15. Hello,
to my mind, liberty of expression must be tolerated except in the case of a person's moral integrity damaging. It is everyone's right to speak up about their opinion and stand up for topics and social events they want to defend which is the basis of a democracy, but mustn't in any case harm anyone's moral. In such a case it would be considered as diffamation and hate speech, which is considered illegal, thus being punished by the law.

  16. I believe, there are limits to freedom of expression because we live in a society and therefore we have to be careful not to hurt others. That’s why we have to respect everybody, we can share our ideas with others but not impose them. Finally we must ban racism, homophobia and any other form of exclusion because this verbal violence is unacceptable.

  17. Hello,
I think that there are limits to freedom of expression. In fact, freedom of expression does mean that you can express what you want/think but in a certain respect, everything is not always good to say and know. Some people confuse these two notions and sometimes it could hurt and not be useful. But other times the realities that are said are helpful and permit to be in a better relation. If we talk about the justice, you could be punished for injuries that you consider as freedom of expression. Indeed the social media totally relate about that, as people are behind screens they must think that they’re protected and consider the injuries, the violence that they promote as allowed but they’re not. They’re prohibited by the justice (it depends on the case but most of the time it is). The freedom of expression is not an excuse to the ailments that you’ve engendered.

  18. In my opinion, there are some limits to freedom of expression.
Indeed, when you are talking with someone you don't know that much, or when you are talking with an older person, you can't insult him or say racist things about him or his religion or anything else.
But I think that when you know very good the person who you are talking with, you can permit yourself to say some things. You know the limits with them. However, I am not saying that someone should insult someone but people can have a debate about any subject.
Finally, I would say that limits to freedom of expression depends on many things and mainly with the person you are talking.
