Do you think France should pay tribute to Philippe Pétain in the WW1 commemoration ?

  1. Hi everybody,

As for me, like President Emmanuel Macron said, it's absolutely legitimate that France honours the role of Philippe Pétain for being a "great soldier" in WW1. I reckon that we should always remember that he contributed to the liberation of Verdun in 1916. Consequently, I think that France should pay tribute to Philippe Pétain in the WW1 commemoration, specialy for the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.

  2. Hello,

President Macron said: ” One could have been a great soldier during the First World War, and have led to some fatal choices during the second”

Marshal Petain was a great soldier during the First World War. He led the battle of Verdun and he will draw from this period the title of "winner of Verdun".

During the second world war, he brought to France and abroad an aid to Nazi Germany and its allies. He was therefore found guilty of national indignity and sentenced for this to the exclusion of the right to vote, excluding public office, he lost his rank in the armed forces, the prohibition to keep or carry weapons ...

To my mind, Macron was right to pay tribute to Philippe Pétain for the First World War because he was very important in this war and because he served France despite what he did during the Second World War. Indeed, it was a tribute for the first world war and not for the second.

  3. Hello!
In my opinion we souldn't pay a tribute to Philippe Pétain.
Despite the fact that he helped the French soldiers during the WW1 he is also a traitor. He "sold" France to the nazis and collaborated with Hitler. Thereby, I think this behavior is outrageous from a such important person like Pétain.
Here is the reason why I am against this tribute.

  4. Hello,
I think that France should pay tribute to Philippe Pétain on the occasion of the commemoration of the 1st World War. Petain was during the first world war "the savior of Verdun", thanks to him a part of the war was won. During this period he was a brave man even though during the Second World War Petain was a horrible man and collaborated with the Germans. I think we can say that Petain was two different men during his life and that we can still thank him for all his acts of bravery during the First World War.

  5. According to me, it's a very difficult question and all the problem is :
Should we separate the actions of P. Petain during the WW1 and the WW2 ? or should we considere only the man and all his action, his fight.
In my opinion we have to think about the man with all his life and in this situation we can afford thinking about collaboration and participation in the shoah. To conclude I don't really aggree with the tribute to P Petain

  6. Hi everybody,

Should we pay tribute to Philippe Pétain for his actions during World War I? This is a difficult question to answer because it provokes a debate.

Indeed, Philippe Pétain was a military leader during the Great War, that’s why he was promoted to Marshal which is the highest military rank. He was regarded as a hero after 1918 by France because he managed a moral crisis in 1917 (he stopped useless murderous offensives, and he gave soldiers the right to be on a leave).
But Pétain is also the one who collaborated with the Nazis and played a major role in the genocide. On 22 June 1940 he signed the armistice with Hitler, then he established the Vichy regime. Marshal Pétain committed a lot of crimes, like deportation and murder. General De Gaulle sentenced him to life because of that in 1945 instead of executing him because he was old.

I don’t think we should judge someone by only one of their actions but by everything they’ve done in their life. We should obviously remember what he did during World War I, but we have not to forget that he was a war criminal and a criminal against humanity during World War II.

  7. I think it's a pretty delicate issue to deal with because the General Petain was an important person in France's history.

That said during the Second World War he had to make decisions for a whole state, France. He thought he was doing well by trying to limit the amount of damage despite the fact that it was not the right decision.
He has contributed to the history of France and even though he was a collaborator he's also a person who wanted the good of his country. In addition, he was the battle hero at the First World War.
That's why I think Pétain deserves a commemoration.

  8. Hello,
It’s really difficult to have a precise idea because on the one hand, we are commemorating the WW1 so we need to focus just on what Pétain did during this war and we have to remember that he won Verdun in 1916.
But on the other hand, according to me, Pétain used the fact that he won Verdun to have fame and to pretend that is normal to collaborate with Nazis during WW2 which cost thousands of deportations.
In short, history doesn’t erase faults of marshals who did a good thing just before and if we want to be remembered as a hero, we have to be one during all our life.

  9. Hello everyone, first of all I think that we should respect Petain for his contribution in the First World War and especially in the Battle of Verdun. However, the Second World War, Nazism and the Vichy regime blackened the picture of Petain. To conclude, I think that France should pay tribute to Petain because it is about the ceremony concerning the first world war and his great contribution for this flag and our patriotism but if we speak about second world war I think it would not be smart to pay tribute to him because the Lastly, image we have of this Marshal is that of violent anti-Semitism and collaborating with the Germans.

  10. Hello everybody!
Like everyone else, I think that answering this question is very difficult.

First of all, the opinion on the Maréchal Pétain and his actions are different according to people and times. As many of you have said, the question is to know if we should separate the behavior of the Maréchal Pétain during the World War I, and the World War II. Indeed, after the World War I, Petain appeared as a hero in the eyes of the French population. However, since the World War II, he is seen as a "traitor" who collaborated with the Germans, because it is the one who organized the Vichy Regime and made France a collaborator country.

Then, I think that paying tribute to Maréchal Petain, while he collaborated in the deportation of many people would be misplaced. Indeed, in my opinion, we can't forget the mistakes he made, even if we can not deny his behavior during the World War I.

To conclude, I think that there is no right or wrong answer to this question because it depends of people's opinion.

  11. Hi everyone

Recently, a polemic started because the president Emmanuel Macron talked about the general Petain during the WW1 commemoration.
On the one hand, Philippe Petain was effectively a great soldier during WW1. He was part of the French army and fought against the German army, that is to say he helped France winning the war.
However, the general Petain had a terrible role during WW2 : he allied with the Nazi government and participated in the jewish killings. Moreover, he didn't fight for France as he accepted to conclude a deal with Germany, whereas De Gaulle asked France to keep fighting.
To my point of view, Emmanuel Macron shouldn't have told compliments about Petain on TV, as the jewish community can never agree with him. In fact many people suffered from WW2 so respecting Petain means not caring about them.
On the contrary, I'm not saying Macron was wrong to say that, he just should have thought about everyone in France who were the victims of Petain.

To conclude, this subject is very complicated as Petain was a hero during WW1 but he made terrible choices during WW2. We can't pay tribute to him because it means forgetting about a part of the history, still we have to mention his role in the battle of Verdun.

  12. Emanuel Macron, the president has said it is “legitimate” to pay tribute to Marshal Philippe Pétain, who led the French army to victory in the first world war but decades later collaborated with Nazi Germany.

Emmanuel Macron’s plan to honour Pétain alongside seven other French marshals who directed military campaigns during the first world war, which ended 100 years ago on 11 November, has unleashed criticism from Jewish groups, political opponents and on social media.
I absolutely do not agree with our President. I think that during the first world war, the Petain Marshal could not be totally sure that the strategy would work, whereas during the second world war he was aware that by cooperating with the Nazis, there would be victims. In addition, not only did he deliver thousands of Jews, but he also incited the Nazis to deport Jewish children.
So I think that Marshal Petain has nothing to do with the "heroes" of the war during the tribute on November 11

  13. I think that we cant represent Philippe Pétain as a hero. He made a mistake with France by submitting it to Germany.
He contributed to the establishment of Nazism in France through the Vichy regime.
But didn't he think that Germany would win the war ? Didn't he want to protect France?
Can we really blame him for the entire responsibility of the French disasters of the Second World War?
He nevertheless contributed to saving France during the First World War and I think we still owe him a tribute.

  14. Hi everyone !
To my mind, it is normal to pay tribute to the great soldier who was Petain during the WW1. He was an important actor of the win against Germany and was a hero in France. Therefor what he did while this war we must to pay tribute to him. On the other hand, his traitor behaviour while the WW2 don’t deserve to pay tribute to him. It is a difficult decision to make for Emanuel Macron so we must to respect it.

  15. I really think we should pay tribute to Pétain in World War 1 commemoration, because he was a hero in this war, and he saved France and contributed to French victory, especially in Verdun's battle.
Of course he surrendered and collaborated with the nazis in World War 2, but now we are celebrating the centenary of the end of World War 1.

  17. Philippe Pétain's role during the First World War was to play the role of a commander close to his soldiers in the terrible battle of Verdun. It was because he was considered too un-aggressive that his hierarchy later withdrew him from the front lines.
However, how was he more heroic than any of the nearly one million four hundred thousand French soldiers who died during the conflict? Or even the nearly twenty million women, men and children who died?
Thereafter, the Vichy regime collaborated with the Nazis. Especially from 1942 onwards, when he launched offensives against the Allies in North Africa and provided for Jewish, resistance and communist deportees. Therefore morally, ethically, historically, Philippe Pétain has no right in my opinion to a special tribute.

  18. On Wednesday, November 7, Macron had deemed "legitimate" to pay tribute to Marshal Petain Saturday, November 10 to the Invalides, pointing out that the leader of the Vichy regime had been "during the first world war a great soldier", even if he " leads some fatal choices "during the second, before giving up this tribute to the controversy.
Philippe Pétain was a military diplomat, who was appointed by Joffre, to straighten France during the Battle of Verdun. He succeeded in straighten his troops, as well as France, when they were at lowest. Furthermore, he has done his best to take care of the soldiers, feed them... He stands out for his calm and sense of command.
However, during the WW2, he chose to collaborate with the Nazi Germany, to "save" France. It was a bad choice, which left thousands dead.
In my opinion, we can't excuse him, but we can still make a commemoration in his honor.
So, to my mind, France should pay tribute to Pétain in the WW1 commemoration, for his courage in the WW1 but not for the WW2.

  19. Hello there,
I don’t agree with The president Macron’s plan to honour Pétain alongside seven other French marshals who directed military campaigns during the first world war. His administration, based in the unoccupied part of the country known as Vichy France, collaborated with the Nazis and their deportation and extermination of the Jews. It is shocking that France can pay tribute to a man which is causing thousands of deaths.

  20. Hi everyone, I hope you are well.

To my mind, I think it is normal to pay tribute to Philippe Petain in the WW1 commemoration. «The man of Verdun " was nicknamed. In fact, his sense of the organization, supported by a real charisma are in particular in the victorious outcome of the fight.

He played an important role for France, thus I think that it is normal.

  21. In my opinion, despite the fact that the general Pétain had made some serious mistakes during the second world war, more precisely during german occupation, France should pay tribute to him.
We cannot forget that he fought for our safety during the first world war, moreover he led our country to the victory so it's obvious that, back then, he was a real hero. Everybody can make mistakes, it's our natural behavior. Furthermore we cannot only consider the bad things he committed.
To conclude, I hope that France will pay tribute to the general Pétain with regards to good actions he undertook.

To my mind i think it’s so difficult to give an answer because on one hand during the first world war Philippe Pétain has been the general who helped France to win this war for example with the battle of Verdun but in the other hand during the second world war Philippe Pétain collaborate with Hitler and his nazism regime. To conclude i think France shouldn’t pay tribute to Philippe Pétain in the WW1 commemoration because although he was a good general during the first world war, during the second world war he participate in the jewish genocide.
