What do you think about country-related stereotypes ? (Like the baguette for French people)

  1. Hello,
I think it is funny, like the English man wearing a hat with a cup of tea, or the Italian pizzaiolo, it'is cool and really funny. There is some truth in these stereotypes But sometimes it's can become upstting, and that can push us to categorize people. If someone says americans are fat or the romanians are thieves it is not right at all and this is very wicked and discriminatory. We have to keep a happy balance and of course always see things with a critical eye of to be right.

  2. The stereotypes about countries are fake but like all the other stereotypes there is a little bit of truth. The stereotypes are just extremely exagerated.
So I think that we shouldn't trust thoose stereotypes to judge people. There is stereotypes for all countries and I think that we shouldn't trust them. If we want to know things about thoose countries we should go there.
To conclude I want to add that we should believe that what we see. And not believe what people can say. Because it can be wrong or exagerated.

  3. Hello everybody,

I think that there are many stereotypes in our society that are creating barriers between state and population.
Based on stereotypes people will be more likely to create social relationship or can be reluctant to speak and mixed with each other.
Stereotypes are biased since they are based on pre-judgement about civilization, culture, way of living. Stereotypes are most of the time true, but they didn’t relate the reality it’s just a narrow vision and a standardization of society. Stereotypes is for my mind what came before racism and push people to be block on their own subject without trying to look forward.

My point of view seems to be pessimistic, but I totally approved the fact that not every Russian likes vodka and not every English likes tea.

  4. In my opinion, country-related stereotypes contains a certain truth and have a real function too. A certain truth because stereotypes are not born without a reason. Let’s take the example of France. Why is it symbolized with the baguette ? Isnt it true that french people are daily consumers of this food item bein an integral part of their eating habit ? On the other hand, stereotypes have a function because for tourits and newcomers this makes it possible to distinguish between one country and one other and to value the specificities of every one. Certainly sometimes simplistic the stereotype strengthens the identity aspect of the concerned countries. However, some stereotypes can be very negative and generalize without representing the whole truth. In this case, stereotypes can even damage the reputation of a country and even hurt the feelings of their inhabitants. It is important to understand where stereotypes come from and the history of the country. To conclude, I believe that in every stereotype there is a part of truth but it does not mean it represents the whole country or the actual time (some stereotypes come from the past and are not true anymore).

  5. Hi,
In my opinion, stereotypes are just an exaggeration of reality and they are sometimes totally untrue, but it may be true in some cases. This can sometimes be totally hilarious but other times offensive, I think it is to be taken with humour and should not be taken seriously. However, this accords every important "element " in each country, and it can unify the inhabitants of the same country because they all feel concerned (for example, the baguette of bread in France, it is practically indispensable for everyone).

For me, I take that to the second degree.

  6. Hi everyone,

I think that on the one hand, country-related stereotypes are for the most part harmless. For instance when a French man is represented wearing a striped shirt and a beret while holding a baguette and a glass of wine, it’s just a silly stereotype that can make people smile or laugh. Furthermore, it can increase tourist activities and even attract tourists in the country, which is a plus for economic growth. Not only they’re harmless, but they also hold some truth. To give a few examples, most French people eat baguettes daily, most English people drink tea often and most Italian people enjoy pizza.
On the other hand, these stereotypes can sometimes be offensive when they’re used to mock people from a certain country. In my opinion, that is very wrong because even if it’s only meant as a joke, it can offend people and divide us.

  7. Hello !

I think that the country-related stereotypes could be very funny many times except when they become caricatures, I’m going to explain that:

A lot of sterotypes are told by world of mouth around the world but aren’t necessarily true. For exemple, the French with their « baguette » every morning it’s pretty true but the Portuguese who are (of course) bricklayers or builders, it’s not. In any case, it is noted that some people can not take it. These kind of caricatures can be taken as a kind of racism. To give an other example, when we say that the Chinese eat cats or are all of them « yellow », we can understand that they don’t like it.

To conclude my idea of country-related stereotypes, we have to be carefull with theses « jokes » because, perhaps, they will be not appreciated by all.

  8. I think that some stereotypes can be true because traditions and customs are part of the culture of the countries. For example, in France we have a reputation as a major consumer of wine because wine is an integral part of our heritage. In spite of everything, many clichés are false, like the one that says "the French are frog leg eaters" or "the French are dirty" which is of course totally false. Finally, I support the idea that we should not stop on stereotypes because we must remain open to everyone and not be biased. Thanks for reading me

  9. Hello everybody,

The subject of country-related stereotypes makes me laugh a lot!
For example, the Russians who drink a lot of vodka, the bottle of red wine for the French, or still the Belgians who love fries and beers, we also have Portuguese well known to work in the building trades then the pastas and the Italian pizzas! There are plenty of other cliché concerning certain countries some are funny sometimes it is false, but it feeds the perception of a country and his inhabitants.

  10. Hello everyone,

To my mind, country-related stereotypes are more or less true. Indeed, a stereotype represents the way of life, the culture or the civilization of a group of persons or an area. Based on the example of French stereotype which is the baguette, everyone know that if they go in France, they would see lots of baguette sales and people eating it, it shows that the stereotype on their eating habit is true, and funny otherwise.

However, some stereotypes might be false or invented, but also exagerated. Let's take the example of Asian people. There are so many persons who think or laugh about the fact that all Asians eat dogs or insects whereas it's not true. This kind of idea made on Asians is negative and as I'm concerned, it's very racist. It creates a bad reputation for the country and could hurt the people.

In conclusion, there are some stereotypes that we shouldn't trust in and others that are true.

  11. Hi everyone,

As for me, country-related stereotype is a good thing because for instance people can hear of culinary tradition. Plainly speaking people say that french guys are accustomed to dip his croissant in the coffee at breakfast time.
To give an example, when I have been in Germany, the mother of my host family asked me if I dip my croissant in my milk (I don't like coffee). To be honest, that's true that I do it. But not everytime! Therefore she looked me at every saturdays breakfast (croissant day :D) if I really do that! The fact is she looked after me! That's kind of funny (and also weird haha).
To conclude I think that country-related stereotypes are a good thing, and they can usually bring informations of others countries. And they also could cause the curiosity of people. Infact, I really ask me about Italy-related stereotypes, like the pizza for Italian people.
    Do you ?

  12. Hi everyone,

I think that stereotypes are neither good or bad. They are the image the country give to the rest of the world. For example there is the stereotype that in America everything is udge, so if you have never been to America, you can imagine America in that way. Which is not totaly wrong. But on the other hand, some stereotypes are not totaly true : French don't wear béret everyday even if we do eat a lot of bread and specialy baguette. In some old picture you can see that young French children used to wear béret more often that now. So the stereotypes can change and evolve with time. And sometimes they are a little annoying : I went in Germany for three months and every time I met someone and they discovered that I was French they were pretending to drink a glass of wine or saying the word " baguette" an hundred time.

  13. Hi everyone,

First of all, I'm going to define a stereotype : it is a well-known idea or an idea that is held by a number of people.

First, I think that the stereotypes may be fun if we talk the stereotypes about the country's food. Here are some examples : English food = fish and chips, pudding and tea ; French food = baguette, cheese, frogs and wine ; Spanish food = paella and sangria ; Belgian food = mussels, French fries and beer ; Italian food = pizza, pasta and risottos ; Japanese food = sushi, maki and sashimi, Mexican food = tacos, burritos, tortillas and tequila... In fact, in a country, the majority of the population eat and drink the food which is known by the wider world. But we all know these people don't eat these dishes or drink these beverages every day. At the same time, we are aware that each person has his own tastes, which means there are people who don't like their typical food.

However, I think we should not listen the clichés about country (except for the stereotypes about the country's food). The stereotypes about the lifestyle and the behaviour of the population of a particular country are mainly wrong. We musn't think that all Colombian people are drug dealers, all Dutch people smoke weed everyday, all Italian men are male chauvinists, all Mexican people are lazy and carry a firearm, all Russian people are being watched by spies, all Albanian men are mafiosi and Albanian women are ladies of the night, all Romanian people are thieves, all African people are HIV/AIDS (or other serious viruses) infected...
These country-related stereotypes are misleading but a lot of people round the world believe them. They generalize without representing the whole truth, they affect tourism : prevent tourists to go in some countries.

To my mind, it is easier to remember a negative criticism than a positive criticism because we remember bad things than good. Moreover, the term "stereotype" contains a negative connotation. That's why, a lot of country-related stereotypes are mainly bad. The more we will open ourselves up to the world, the more our prejudices will disappear.

  14. Each population has its own stereotypes that make it possible to characterize a population and differentiate it from others. That's why I find the presence of stereotypes about countries so long as they are not cruel and mean. Even if for the most part they are based on facts that may have passed but are real, as they say «where there is smoke, there is fire», we must not forget that this is not our reality.
Moreover, stereotypes can be useful in artistic fields such as cinema, where these characteristics are exaggerated to make the audience laugh, as in the fim Bienvenu ches les ch'tis, the literary field, for example in the book A year in the merde, in which the main character moves to France and finds out what the French are really like. Or in the field of caricature, which is totally based on exaggeration and stereotypes. Finally, I find that these stereotypes are an invitation to travel, allowing us to confirm or not all these stereotypes

However, there are stereotypes that are not true and can end up being annoying, such as people thinking that we eat snails or frogs as if they were appetizers.

I love humor and I think these stereotypes are funny. Frenches love baguette, wine, all Americans are obese, Englishes from United Kingdom are very white, Chineses always take photos. I think these stereotypes are really funny because they are all almost true. But other stereotypes exist which are mean, racist, they can be violent and are false. They exist only for bad persons who want humiliate other people and I desagree with that.

However, there is a limit. If these stereotypes are false they can be upstting for someone like if we say that Chinese are always big or something like that. As long as these stereotypes do not become the discrimination, they can exist.

  18. Hi !
Every country has it own stereotypes, people like to generalize what they see on television or in the media.
Each country has its own characteristics, positive and negative ones, serving or disserving the population.
On the one hand, there are the negative points: sometimes, what we here about certain populations,
makes us think everybody with this nationality has this character e.g. all Italians are machos, or, Belgians only eat mussels and French frites.
These stereotypes can be funny, but can also be very negative. We turn them into jokes, but they can hurt people !
You should not make an opinion about a population because of the stereotypes : French people do eat other things than “baguette” and
snails ! And even if the general opinion says the contrary, Germans can be soft and sweet.
The positive sides of the stereotypes are the inspiration they can give for humor and films. When you look at comic soap series
sometimes you learn typical things about certain countries!
Hearsay is a bad way for people to make their opinion: it is far more interesting getting to know people than to rely on stereotypes to make your opinion about what people say.

    Thanks for reading !

  19. Hello!

I think that country-related stereotypes are really funny, but may hurt. When I was nine, I went to Russia for two years and when I returned in France, some people thougt that I was Irish, because of my red hair and my pale skin. That was really funny. And when I told them that I've lived in Russia, they thougt that I was Russian and they told me "Are you drinking vodka everyday?", I said with irony "Vodka? Oh! Sure! I pour it in my cereals at breakfast, I drink it like water at meal and for diner, I use vodka to make my soup boil!". They also said that I have a russian accent, but I didn't, because I lived in France for nine years before, it's really impossible to get an accent just like that.
This is why I think that country-related stereotypes are really fun.
But, in some cases, like Mexican's, some companies don't want to hire them because the mexican's stereotypes is that they are very lazy. It's very unfair for them and I would like them to prove the contrary.

  21. Hi!

Each country has its own culture and ways of living but many countries and their inhabitants are caracterized by stereotypes. For example, the French wear a "béret", eat baguette and drink wine; the English are posh and always polite and the Germans always eat sausages.
Some of these ideas are true, for example, many French people do drink wine and have a baguette with their meals. However, not all French people do and not for every meal. Some Germans do eat a lot of sausages, in fact, the Germans probably eat more sausages than Norwegians do. However, not all Germans eat sausages and certainly not all the time. These ideas become strereotypes when they are generalized and exagerated.

To me, some country-related stereotypes are actually quite accurate even though they don't define a population of people. However some stereotypes are completely absurd and very negative. Some of them can even hurt people, which is why I think we should be careful when we use them.

  22. Hello everyone
I don’t think if stereotypes are all true, but in my opinion there is a little true in them. Thanks stereotypes we can know something about culture, manners in some countries. I’m sure that we can’t evaluate somebody well or bad because of his or her nationality. Everybody has an individual character. According to the stereotypes all occupants of a country will be the same but it’s not that so. Germans are believed to be very punctual. It is thought that, they like drinking a lot of beer, they like order and tidiness and that they are well organized. People believe that French are very romantic people, and that they like eating frogs and snails. Italians are described as very open, noisy and handsome people. For me, each country has its good and bed features and not always the stereotypes match the relativity.

  23. Hello!

In my opinion, stereotypes have both positive and negative aspects. Indeed, I think stereotypes can be quite amusing, when of course they are used in moderation. To move on to the negative aspect, I think in the majority of cases they are used in a pejorative way and that the purpose is not to make people laugh but to make fun of them. We can of course discuss of what is hurtful or not and if the aim was to hurt the person or not. Speaking for myself, I find that from the moment when the goal has to purpose to belittle the culture of a nation, even if it is gently, it is a pejorative stereotype.

  24. First of all, I think that certain stereotypes are true and that they do not give a bad image of a country, like for example the French baguette or the English tea. On the other hand, some stereotypes can be negative like hamburgers in the USA and obesity. We can then think that all Americans are obese. Every people have stereotypes and we must not create divisions between them. Some stereotypes mean that some countries are liked. Many countries are famous because of stereotype like Italy with pizza and pasta, France with vine, cheese and bread, so it can be a good thing.

  25. Hi! Stereoptypes are, to my mind , a set of presumed ideas about a population based on its culture or physical traits.
I guess, it is very funny except if the person concerned is ofended. Indeed stereotypes are used to joke around with our friends, like when I went to Ireland, with my Irish family we shared mutual stereotypes and it was lovely to laugh about ourselves.
But of course you got to be comfortable with the person in front of you, because some mockeries are not funny,
I am thinking here of the famous French brand : Banania, which had portrayed an African on the basis of stereotypes, but it was racist.
To conclude, country-related stereotypes are more or less true, for instance, it is true to say that British people like tea, but are they always polite and drunk ?Moreover, French love the "baguette" but are we dirty and eat frogs every day as well ?

  26. Hello,
Stereotypes are implanted in our society. It is an opinion built on old belief, generalizations and which are accepted without reflection and repeated without having been subjected to a critical examination, by a person or a group, and which can determine his or her ways of thinking, feeling and acting. Concerning country related stereotypes, it can sometimes become a problem because when they are bad they can lead to xenophobia and distrust towards people from other other countries. Furthermore I think stereotypes can be destroyed step by step with mix of cultures and globalization.

I think we can even laugh at these stereotypes, because they are not nasty things but drole , after for example I know that some Portuguese and Turkish take very badly the stereotype that says they are all very hairy, while this is not something nasty and it’s just natural so some people like this feel attack when there is no need to be.
In my opinion, we can laugh at everyone but not with everyone unfortunately.

it’s even rewarding. Same thing for spain, " beach contry" it's rewarding. We can laught about this
the only problem is that people take it personally beacause that touch their egos
