Brexit -Northern Ireland

  1. Hi.

This video deals with the Northern Ireland protocol that is meant to ensure there is no need for checks along the land border between Northern Ireland (in the UK) and the Republic of Ireland (in the EU). Therefore, this protocol implies the checks to take place on goods entering Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK. Thus, this measures are creating a sea border in the Irish sea. So, it triggered the anger of Irish Unionists, as of the act enforcement, as they felt the Northern Ireland's belonging to the UK is under threat.
In order to preserve the UK territorial integrity, Lord David Frost, the Brexit minister, wants to agree on a deal that enables good relationships and free trades. Lord David Frost is warning EU that London will use article 16 to suspend the checks, if a deal is not agreed soon.
The journalist says this drama is necessary to close in on a deal. He also says that the UK and Lord David Frost are saying EU is reluctant to comprise although it is opened to finding accommodations to make the implementation of the protocol more smooth. He also mentions that it is not the first time the UK threatens to make use of the so-called article 16, which is the only lever the UK has to pull in these negotiations and thus the UK have to be really careful about the timing of pulling it.

  2. Hi,

This video deals with the Northern Ireland protocol which is meant to prevent checks along the border between Northern Ireland (in the UK) and the Republic of Ireland (in the EU).
Under the protocol it was agreed that Northern Ireland would continue to follow EU rules on product standards (part of the EU's single market rules) to prevent checks along the border. Checks would instead take place on goods entering Northern Ireland from England, Scotland or Wales.

The unionists anger was triggered after the protocol enforcement, as the protocol creates a sea border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK which is threatening Northern Ireland's belonging to the UK.
Hence, Lord Frost - the brexit minister - proposals to change the protocol and get rid of customs checks between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. He has proposed a new system in which goods would be able to circulate freely in Northern Ireland if they conform to either EU or UK regulations. At the moment they have to meet EU standards.

Therefore London is threatening to make use of the article 16 to suspend the checks as the EU seems not to be on the fast track to finding a solution.

The journalist says it's not the first the UK has threatened to suspend border checks in Northern Ireland as agreed with the EU.
He also says that "article 16" is the only lever that the UK has to pull in these negotiations and thus if it is going to do so, it has to be incredibly careful in the timing of doing so.
