Abolition of the death penalty

40 years ago the death penalty was abolished in France. What is your opinion about this? Do you think that’s a good thing or should it be reinstated ?

  1. I recently heard that some french people want to restore the death penalty. In my opinion, certain crimes like rape and recidivism must be punished by the death penalty because they are unforgivable and without justification. However, we should be very careful to not kill people by miscarriage of justice.

  2. For me it’s a good thing that the death penalty was abolished in France,40 years ago. Indeed the death penalty is too cruel a punishment and allows the prisoner to die in peace.
For me, the worst crimes have to lead to a life sentence because the criminal will learn much more from his actions in prison than if he is killed.
So, I think that shouldn’t be reinstated because there was in the past a lot injustice who caused the death of innocent people.

  3. On the one hand I think it's a good idea because the death penalty was not often controlled and a lot of people would die when sometimes it was maybe innocent, i find that death is not often the better idea to punish a person.
On the other hand I think that the death penalty could be a good thing too, for example the person who rapes or who kills it is punished by the death penalty so will push people not to kill not to rape and there fore to decrease the number of crime and rape.

  4. In my opinion, death penalty souldn’t be reinstated, indeed we cannot punish violence by using violence in our society, plus it could lead to the death of innocents people whom were given an unfair trial. However, I do think that the law should be more severe towards rapists, murderers, and pedophiles, indeed those crimes require heavier penalty and people who commit them don’t deserve parole and even less freedom.

  5. Hello,
I think the abolition of the death penalty is a good thing because in a democracy it is important to believe that humans can always get better. Therefore, it is important that a real process of integrating former prisoners back into society, was made.

  6. My opinion is divided because on the one hand I am for the death penalty, for example when a murder is committed, the murderer must be condemned to the same fate which is logical, after each case is different, if we take a beaten woman for example who kills her attacker so she does not deserve the death penalty because she is only defending herself from the attacker. And on the other hand I am against the abolition of the death penalty because justice is badly done I think and many innocent prisoners are condemned.

  8. Hello, the question of the death penalty is a subjet very interesting. In my opinion the abolition of the death penalty were a very big step in the society 40 years ago. I think justice can't decide that one human can live and another have to die. We have to remember that justice is humans, and I think that one man(a judge for example)can't decide the fate of another. We can't settle things in death. We can think about victims and families too, I can't imagine that death of one criminal will help in the bereavement and the satisfaction. We have to think about the mistakes, a lot of innocents were killed and at the moment of the revelation of the true criminal that's too late. This is why I support the maintenance of the abolition of death penalty.

      -a very interesting subject
      -penalty was
      -another one has
-justice is carried out by humans
      -the death of one
      -bereavement (without "the")
-when the real criminals are found it's too late

  9. To my mind it is a good thing that the death penalty was abolished because someone’s death doesn’t bring justice. Indeed a life can’t be taken for another life that is to say if someone kills a person his death penalty won’t return the life of the victim. Moreover when we put a criminal in jail he can realize what did he do and then to became a better person by learning from his mistake. If we condemn him it is like burying the problem without solving it. Many poor and minorities were killed when they were innocent so I think that this abolition is an important law that should be passed in every country.

  10. First of all, the dead penalty was abolished in September 1980 by François Mitterrand (the old French President).
Some people (humanists, religious...) are for the right to live while others are against it, especially for horrific crimes (rape, pedophilia, murder...).
That's why it's a subject of debate between supporters and non-suporters of the dead penalty.

About me, I am more on the side of the dead penalty's supporters but only for serious crimes where we have formal evidence against the accused.
Obviously, I would not approve the voluntary execution of a person who is in doubt (wether she's guilty or not). In this case, imprisonment would be more legitimate.

So "What is your opinion about this? Do you think that’s a good thing or should it be reinstated ?", I think it's a good thing if it be reinstated bu just for certains conditions.

to finish even if I am against this punishment, I can understand the opinion of those who are for the death penalty when they see that big criminals have the very good life in prison (TV, medical care, food)

  12. As far as I'm concerned, I think the death penalty is an absurdity. We aren't Gods to decide what to do with a human life. A human life has no cost, it is so priceless that, in my opinion, we cannot give us the right to decide whether to end it or not. However, it is true that some criminals do terrible things, that might question if they really deserve to live, but I think it is not our decision to make. Thus, I think death is not a sentence we can pronounce ourselves, as normal human beings, although some people merit of living can be questionable.

  13. In my opinion it's a good thing because nobody deserves to die in these conditions.
However people who made mistakes must be punished and go to jail for serve his sentence but no one has the right to decide the life or the death of a person even if she has committed many crime.

  14. Clearly, the death penalty is a way to be punished for your crimes, but it’s justice depends on the crimes commited and on the circumstances. I think that the death penalty is the easiest way to be punished. If you compare it to a life time sentence, the prisoner will have time to feel guilty and think about the consequences of his actions. In addition some people who have been condemned weren’t the real criminals. The court made a mistake on their judgment. Innocents have been unfairly condemned to death without.

  15. In my opinion, death penalty is not a way to punished people. I think that even the worst criminal doesn't deserve to die in that conditions. Also I think it's more difficult to stay in jail for the rest of your life than dying because you will always have to think about what you've done. I believe that life imprisonment is more effective if it's done the right way (without all the confort that you can have nowadays, even just for the first years). It's a non-sense that we can choose if a person can live or not just because she choose to make that choice for somebody else.

  16. To my mind, this question should not be posed. Indeed some criminal commit a bad action yet any crimes should be punished by death even if the criminal don't have a justification.
In france there is a right to life so morally, nobody should kill someone else even if the "justice".

  17. Hey,
I don’t think it’s a good idea to reinstate it because it’s a form of escaping for the criminals and it’s not fair for the victims because they can’t pay for their crimes.

  18. I think the abolition of the death penalty is a good thing because firstly, nobody should have the right to take a human life, even the justice after a trial.
Secondly, I think that if it is a question of finding the worst punishment for people who have committed the worst crimes (like terrorism or murder) the death penalty
isn’t the most horrible punishment that exists. En effect, being locked in jail for his entire life is worse. The death penalty, if it was in the law, could be a way to escape this life of imprisonment for some people.

  19. In France, death penalty was abolished in 1981.
In my opinion it was a good decision because anybody have to incur this criminal act even if we did terrible things. We can’t resolve violence with violence. If we want to condemn them we must put them in prison where they will live in suffering. And where they could think about what they did. Reinstated death penalty could be dangerous because people will use it unfairly.

  20. First of all, I think that the abolition of the death penalty is a good thing. Indeed, even people who have done terrible things, should rather spend the rest of their lives questioning themselves, thinking about what they have done and trying to find peace than being killed. Even if there are criminals who have killed hundreds of people, killing them would not change the lives they have taken and the harm they have done around them. So, I think that by being in prison, the criminal will have time to think about what he has done. Rather than fighting evil with evil, I think that trying to help people to become better seems to a better option.

  22. In my opinion I think that it’s a good decision because , some persons were killed but it was injuste for some of them , they don’t merit this violence for what they did . Sometimes they were killed but they don’t really have made a very bad thing contrarily to some who have made something which is not forgiveness and have to be punished for their crimes . 23. In my opinion, death penalty was a very good thing for everyone 40 years ago but i think it might be more important today because there are a lot of killers now with a lot of completely crazy’s ideas. Reinstate death penalty today might limit a lot of crimes to my mind because the majority will be scare about that and so they will think about consequences of their acts.

  24. I think that it was a good idea to abolish the death penalty because even some innocent people’s lives were taken at that time in the name of crime. Moreover, I believe that everyone has a right to live whether it’s a criminal or a normal person but a criminal must be punished behind bars according to the crime he has committed.

  25. I think that the death penalty was right to be abolished 40 years ago since many innocent people were victims of this penalty. Despite that it is true that some criminals do not necessarily deserve a second chance but I’m convinced that it is not in our duty to decide on the death of someone.

  26. Hello,
When I was first confronted with this question I was split about this subject for several reasons that I will explain after, and recently I watched a video from Cyrus North on YouTube that made me change my mind.
On the one hand, I thought that death for the people that made horrible crimes was « too easy », they had no time to regret what they did. Whereas, if they had been in prison, then they could have regretted for a long time. It is a cruel vision, but it is true, some people really deserve to suffer, and regretting is a form of suffering, it gnaws at you all your life. However, the psychopaths, even if they had time to think, wouldn’t regret their acts. That is true for them, but for those who don’t have diseases and are « normal », then time could be a punishment.
But on the other hand, I also thought that kill criminals (or pedophiles, aggressors, etc) could reduce the crime rate. Moreover, on the economic vision death would probably be cheaper than paying all their lives their food, their « lodging » even if this was a prison.
But afterwards, I thought myself « who are we to kill someone ? », even if he did something horrible, it isn’t for me (obviously it isn’t me but the Humans in general) to judge what he did and then decide if he has to live or not.
In the video, Cyrus talked about something that is true and really obvious, but I didn’t even realize it : How could we stop criminality by killing someone because he killed someone ? It makes no sense. It seems to be more a revenge, if we think this way, then we will rape the rapist, hit the one who hit us, etc…We can’t correct things by making them.
Furthermore, death isn’t persuasive. Here is an instance : the suicide bombings. The terrorists aren’t scared of death, so death is not a solution to decrease the crime level. And in addition in some cases, kill someone is cheaper than feeding him all his life, keeping him in prison, etc…
And a point that I knew before seeing the video : the juridical mistakes. In reality they aren’t so rare, on the contrary. There is already the fact that staying years and years in prison without being guilty is so unfair but if moreover you get the death penalty…
So finally, I don't think that the death penalty should be reinstated.

  27. I think that death penalty is something to debate. Death penalty is forbidden in France since 1981. But I know that in others country it's allowed. For me death penalty can only be permitted for extreme cases. For example for someone who killed tens his excuses are not pardonnable. Nevertheless, I can understood that it's something very terrible for everyone.
