Gorillas and monkeys at risk of 'mass extinction' within the next 20 to 25 years

Scientists have warned that without immediate action our closest relatives face mass extinctions in the next 25 to 50 years.
I read an article about the disappearance of gorillas and monkeys who was quite alarmist.

So, what do you think ?
The article : Article on gorillas and monkeys disappearance

  1. Hi,
To begin with, animal species appeared and disappeared with the action of time. For exemple, 500 millions years ago, human does not even exist and other species dominated the world. However, we have recently seen the disappearance of the dodo, a cousin specie of the chicken who lived in Mauritius. We all know that it disappeared because of the hunt. Nowadays, we're in the same case with monkeys but they will maybe disappear because we destroy their life place, the woods. We mustn't continue to destroy the woods either we will change the ecosystem of the earth and break down every food supply chains.
As always, the industrials doesn't listen to ecological association and will keep on with their plan.
To conclude with, there will be disappearance of species because of us, but we must limit them, as much as possible.

    1. Hello. A few suggestions to improve what you've written: "500 million years ago, humans did not even exist..."; "...a species related to the chicken, that lived in..."; "Nowadays, we're facing the same story with...because we are destroying their habitat, the woods/ forests."; "We mustn't continue to destroy the woods as we will change...every food supply chain."; "...the industries don't listen to ecological associations and will keep on doing what they plan to do."

  2. Hi everyone !
    First of all ,
I also read the article about monkeys and gorillas and I was really upset . In fact , because of humans , maybe our closest relatives will be exterminated and will disappeared . To my mind , it's a horrible thing and alarming because nobody cares , we just want to be fine in our world , everything should be done for humans . However , I'm strongly opposed to these ideas because some humans don't think about animals .
To conclude , we should do something for Monkeys and Gorillas in order to save them from the end of their species .

    1. Hello! Just want to point out a few things you need to correct: "...will disappear (not 'disappeared'); "...in order to save them from extinction. (instead of 'the end of their species').

  3. Nowadays many species are disappearing because of the human's actions. Soon it will be the case for gorillas and monkeys.

Deforestation remains the major cause of animals'extinction. To fight against the population's growth the industries need places to cultivate or implant their infrastructures. The jungle is also a place full of wealth and space. The animals are less important than business for the factories. Even if the associations of animals'protection struggle to make people realize how bad the situation actually is, the don't have much impact on people's mind.

From my point of view their should be more campaigns against deforestation and more manifestations. Directors of big factories should start thinking about other solutions for their production because the situation is getting worst and worst.

  4. hi everyone,
I read the article and I was very shocked. It is horrible to think that our closet relatives will (maybe) disappeared because of us. In my opinion it is very disturbing. As Lena said, it seems like nobody cares! So I think that we should really do something to stop that because it is a very important problem.

  5. Hi !
To start with, I totally agree with Lena, it is horrible to know that in 20 years our closest relatives might be extincted because of humans. Indeed, the major factor in the declining number of primates is caused by their habitat loss. This is due to deforestation, pollution of natural habitats, hunting, expansion of rubber plantations and the collection of fuel wood, but also because of the increasing demand for palm oil.
Next, if primates disappear it will be a disaster for our planet as they are vital to Earth's ecosystem : they help in the functioning of forest systems, for example by dispersing seeds, primates are also imperative to our understanding of human evolution, behaviours and of potential risks from upcoming diseases.
All in all, to help save this specie, we should take action and “make conservation a global propriety”.

  6. First ,like Julien said, hundred of species appeared and disappeared through the ages and this happening depends on their conditions of living. On that basis , humans are the cause of the decreasing monkeys and gorillas population , because of the expanding agriculture and the cutting down of million of trees ,so the loss of forests in which monkeys and gorillas live . In my opinion , humans always need more space for living and that is the problem , they can't live together with others species , then they impinge other species's "territory" . Therefore, the solution at this enormous desaster is simple: try to exploit what we already have so that the other species like monkeys and gorillas can have the same living rights as us.

  7. Hello,
Extinction of species, the fact that species totally disappear as a reduction of biodiversity, isn't a novelty.
A specie lives around 5-10 million years and you got to know that during evolution, it's been totally natural to observe apparition (emergence of a specie able to survive and adjust to the environment) and disappearance (in case of difficulty of adaptation to the environment or if it has to cope with competing against another specie).
According to me, protection of the species is of great importances: We must protect ecosystems to ensure the species' survival by cutting less wood since forests provide food, carbon stock and ensure polination for crops, clean water, ect. Since forests are the main habitats for primates, people should consider protecting forests and not hunting monkeys for food (poor people can hunt monkeys for food, so poverty has to be dealt with).
As a conclusion, people should buy certified wood and paper products, conservation of nature is essential.

  8. Hello !

    - To begin with, we must not forget that sixty-five million years ago, the dinosaurs disappeared in what's known as the Earth's fifth mass extinction. And now a sixth mass extinction could be well underway and humans are the likely culprit.
Nowdays only about 20% of gorillas live inside protected areas where, in theory, they are safe from habitat modification by encroaching humans.
    - Like everybody, I read this article and I am very sad for monkeys and gorillas. It is just horrible that humans destroy them like that. However there are lots of solutions; Like Patricia said we can try to exploit what we already have, we can also reduce our carbon footprint to prevent altered conditions which can ravage fragile ecosystems and never buy products made from endangered species, this includes items like ivory, animal furs and rhino horns.

  9. Hi !

I share Lena's and Sky's point of view.
It is indeed awful that we are not only harming our own species beacause of the global warming but also the animals!
I feel horrified and I think our descendant will be angry at us for all our mistakes.
I do individually try not to pullute much but I think the big companies are the one to blame.

To put it all in a nutshell, we all need to make effort, and the countries must have sanctions and taxes for the most polluting companies !

  10. Hi !
I also read the article and like you said it was very alarmist. Indeed, most primate species are now threatened with extinction !
The main cause of that threat is humanity's population expansion :
Humans are destroying monkey's habitat mainly because of agriculture, hunting, illegal pet trade and climate change. Moreover, if primates disappear, an entire eco system is in danger !
So, in my opinion we have to react and fast. When I read the article I was very sad and upset because I think that we don't really realize the impact we cause on the environment. We think that Earth has been made for us but we have to respect it and to cohabit with the other species and not destroy them.
That's why renewable energies or industries which are respectful towards the environment are a good solution to save monkeys and gorillas !

  12. Hello !

As for me, I think that Gorillias and Monkey's extinction is a hudge issue because at first it means that humans are still very cruals to animals and it also means that it starts with Mokey and Gorillias and it will end up by killing all life from hearth, because humans are killing animals but thay also kill each other. To conclued, I think, it is shamefull that we still practice haunting for fun, like a trophee. There should be more restrictive rules about haunting.

  14. Hi,
I've just read the article about monkeys and gorillas disappearance and I'm very worried because I must admit that humans actions often lead to species extinctions.
As a matter of fact, deforestation, pollution of natural habitats, hunting, expansion of rubber plantations and the increasing demand for palm oil are responsible of the declining number of primates because they loose their habitat. And if primates disappear, our planet will be in danger because they are very important for the earth's ecosystem. Therefore, to my mind, humans should stop thinking about themselves but find urgent ways to protect their environment.

  16. This subject makes me laugh a lot...
I am very committed in animal rights so I know the reason of this extinction. Most people don't know why but they would like to do something. The ONLY reason of ths extinction is Nutella. I know how delicious it, but it made by oil palm. Oil palm plantation are the worst enemy of monkeys. So please, to save monkeys, stop eating Nutella. Alternatives wthout oil palm exist. And it is also delicious and cheaper!
To finish, I am extremely touched by this extinction because I am defending animals right for many years. Monkeys because of oil palm have been redered homeless, so they go in villages to feed and they are beaten, humbled, PROSTITUDED! I don't understand where goes the world for spread...
