Social classes

Do you think that social classes create discrimination?

37 comments:

  1. First of all, a social class is a group of people who have in common economic and cultural status, and this group have the same power in the society. It exists four social classes :
    - the Upper Class
    - the Middle Class
    - the Working Class
    - and the Lower Class.
To my mind, it is a very bad thing that social classes exist because some people will be very carefuly with their friend's social classes for exemple, and they will choose their friends just because of their social classes.
Then, like I said, in many country, people have a lot of power just because of their social class, and it is not acceptable. All people should have the same chance in life, no matter how much money they win.
So, I really think that social classes create a sort of discrimination, and the society has to change.

  2. Social class is a status hierarchy in witch individuals and groups are classified on the basis of economic success and accumulation of wealth. There are three classes : Upper class, Middle class and Working class.

Social classes are groups of people. Those who put "in one basket" are in some ways even as they are seen the same way by others. So, there isn’t discrimination within the same social class. Also, those who aren’t interested in what social class belongs to each person doesn’t create discrimination.

On the contrary, many people still care to what class each is. Those people often believe themselves superiors to others and thus allow themselves to judge others and create discrimination. Therefore, those are often those of the Upper class who discriminate others because there are superiors hierarchically.

In fact, I think "social classes" is just an expression that some people use for classify people. It's not something concrete, it's an idea that will make people of other according to their work and their wealth. So, I think some people discriminate others because they feel higher in the hierarchy. But if everybody doesn’t care about social classes, there would be not discrimination. These are the people who believe in this idea that creates discrimination.

  3. Hi everyone ! In my opinion social classes create discrimination because based on my experience people often stay with friends that are in the same social class and it is rarely a choice. Being in the same social class as your friends can be way easier because for example eating or going out when one cannot by anything isn't convenient at all. But the social class isn't the fact why you become friend with someone, the personality is of course way more important but the social class can affect on the friendship.
At school people who are really poor for example are often discriminate because they aren't like everybody and I think this is so stupid and closed minded !

  4. The social classes created the discrimination because they separate between them because of their classe social and it can cause a fear or a rejection of an other one lists which is not our.

  5. In my opinion and in an ideal social classes must not create discrimination as each class is like a cog in the mechanism, without one part does not work the whole mechanism, so each class has a role in society and in all classes must be equal-for example workers must maintain production at factories, teachers have to educate new generations, the police protect the low.But unfortunately in practice it often happens quite different. In many countries more affluent social classes that receive more income have more opportunities than others and this creates a big problem in society. We can conclude that all depends on a particular country and the government that controls them.

  7. For me, it depends on situations. But mostly, it is true that discrimination may be created because of social differences. In college, for example, some people don't stay with others because they were not fashionable, lack of means. Indeed, those who have the means, which are quite well-off can afford to buy some things contrary to those who don't have the means too. So this can create a form of discrimination.

  8. Social classes have existed for as long as we can remember. Indeed even in Ancient Greece, there were several classes (the citizens, the barbarians, the slaves...) which didn't have the same rights at all (male citizens being the only one who had the right to vote). Discrimination being the act of treating somebody differently compared to others based on purely arbitrary reasons, we can say that discrimination was already prevalent at that time.

Moreover during the Middle Ages in Europe, society was split in three orders : those who pray, those who go to war and those who work. Again, there was no equality whatsoever because those who worked (farmers for example) were the only one who paid taxes even though priests and lords were richer.

Furthermore, in Korea during the Joseon Period between the fourteenth and the nineteenth century, yangban was the name of the people who were well-educated and were part of the government and the administration. The examinations to become a yangban could be taken by everybody but in reality, only the sons of aristocrats or of yangbans could succeed : indeed, the exams were written in Chinese, which was solely taught to wealthy people while commoners could only speak Korean.

If we take the example of the caste system in India, where Dalits (who are the lowest caste) are mistreated daily, we could easily affirm that social classes are the cause of discrimination. However, hinduism never vindicates rape for example or any sort of crime, and the caste system in itself was never meant to do any harm. Violence was therefore the result of other factors.

With all these examples, we can conclude that indeed, social classes create discrimination and have been creating discrimination everywhere since men started living in society.

  9. In my opinion social classes do create discrimination because when you put people in different categories and say that some people are better then others creates competition and a sense of inferiority. Moreover it pushes those who are in a higher social class to diminish others but I think when some people earn more money then others ,have a better career there will be necessarily different social classes

  10. Yes, I think that social classes create discrimination. For example, in India, we clearly can see that the lowest social classes are victim of injustice and discrimination. The worst is certainly that these ideals are very hard and very long to change. Indeed, the Republic of India apparently made pass a law against the inter-racial discrimination, but the situation did not change for all that.
To conclude, I think that yes, social classes create discrimination and that shouldn't exist in the twenty-first century.

  11. Discrimination is the fact of treating someone differently just because this person is different from the rest of the group or the community. It can be a discrimination against the skin's color, the gender or social classes as it is the case in this post. The social classes can have many aspects. They are not the same in every countries but still divide the society. Are they really the source of some discriminations?

In India the social classes are called social casts or varnas and separate the Indians in five casts. They can't marry Indians of another cast and the lowest casts must not spend too much time with people of the highest casts. It is forbidden and if they still do it they can be considered as impure.
These casts create a discrimination because the people considere every person who doesn't belong to their cast as different. They reject the ones identified as impure.
The government forbade the system of casts but it remains a big problem in India. However even if the state leads campaigns against cast's discrimination, by not helping the people who need money in the upper cast , they also participate in this discrimination.
To my mind the social classes are the reason of many discrimination's troubles and it is the role of everyone to find solutions to stop this problem. It would improve everybody's life.

  12. To my mind social classes create discrimination. In fact When you separate people from the best to the lowest ,the most high-ranking will feel upper than the lowest classe and they can humiliate , discriminate, laugh at them also they thrive on their servitude .for example in India the lowest class has to serve three first castes in the same order there is people called "untouchable" who was discriminated by the other castes every day.

  13. Since everyday, the social classes create debate. Many figures have tried to remove this social class system as Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin. Indeed if many political and influential people wanted the social classes disappear, it was for a fairer equality. Because the problem is that, obviously, there has always been discrimination in political, economic and social level. Take the example of India : the "castes" are drill present and young women are married according to the social status of their husbands. Thus, a child may be married to an adult just because he is over her class. Every day we see the discrimination in relation to this.

  14. In France there always were social classes and the History shows us that when social classes where marked, the innegalities were stronger. The exemple of the French revolution is certainly the most representative: the differences of education, work and wealth were so unfair that the people turned against the aristocracy which instrumented him. If social classes exist, it is to give a rank that implies a hierarchy. Thus people who occupies the top are in a dominant position and have power of the bottom of the social ladder. To my mind this is there that discrimination starts because in this situation, men do not consider themselves as equal.

  15. To begin with, discrimination had always existed and still continue nowadays. Effectively, in the past, there was a very important inequality between poor and rich classes. But to my mind today inequality and discrimination are less and less important in the developped countries. But discrimination continue to exist all around the world especially in Africa, Asia and South America. To turn back to our society, this question is good to ask with all problems caused by migration. Effectively today with war and terrorism, there is more and more immigrants who come to developped countries. So now a new social problem is asked to us, and it can cause new discriminations.

  16. In my opinion social class can crate discrimination , based on my personal experience people are easily friends with people of the same social class but it is rarely a choice. Being a friend who is not of the same social class as you isn't convenient at all because when you want to go out or eat outside for example and your friend cannot by anything it is sad for both of you. Of course the social class isn't the reason for being friend with someone and it is always behind the personality but it can play on the friendship. Nowadays in school the difference of social class is more and more accepted or even in our school but I know that somewhere else people who are poor for example are rejected because they are different and I find this so stupid and narrow minded !

  17. Social classes is like a title which a attribute to someone. And i think this system is very discriminatory because it give privilege to people and some are not allow to. Only because there are born in classes which have less privilege that other, it's very unfair, some people deserve more privilege than have right now. Moreover this system bring people in a bad way of life because there all start to hate and despite each other, the worst classes will envy the first classes and the first classes will dig the gap and this gap is hatred for each other. A world without social classes is happier and better than a world like thaht

  18. First of all, discrimination and social classes had always existed.
Nowadays, discrimination still exist and is a big issue all around the world.
Social classes show the differences between the people and also create a feeling of inferiority. As some pupils said, some people choose their friends just because of their social classes, and some are rejected because they are in an inferior social class. Of course, this is a generality and this is not like this all the time, even if it happens very often.
To conclude, I think that social classes create discrimination because some people are narrow minded. I think that they have to open their mind in order to make the society better.

  19. I think social classes create discrimination because a person who comes from a higher social class and imagine wishes not to study and do work that really loves but does not win will be sereval wrong decision for the family of this person because his image and give a bad reputation to the familly. It's be the same for a person who comes from a middle class and studied and succeeded in life who will be hurt by the class high.Unfortunnately, there are still some of the highest class who does not mix with the middle classes. The high class she will practice her children a sport that is not for every money, the child will attend the best private schools and talking only people of the same middle social.Les studies are becoming more expensive, the middle class it will put her children in a public school and will not practice physical activity expensive. For example if we do not see on the street a little girl to a doctor father playing with a little boy with a cashier mother because it will still frowned upon.

  20. Naturally, people tend to make friends with people sharing the same interests and we know that many factors play into the "creation" of ourselves as education, lifestyle and social class.
These terms therefore show that social classes can be a source of discrimination such as ethnicity or religion.
Nevertheless, discrimination is defined by singling out and treated differently (mostly bad) someone or a group to the rest of the community or against another person and therefore has no place exist in our country that is representative of liberty, equality and fraternity.

  21. yes I think social classes increased discrimination, strong discrimination occurs between the rich and the poor in particular, in the way of living, DE where they live or even OF the way of dressing, discrimination in relation to social class may appear even at school or in everyday life.

  22. Hi everybody !

To my mind, I do think that social classes create discrimination. In effect, people who belong to the upper class tend to humiliate and deny the one belonging to the lower class.
From my point of view, I totally disagree with that kind of behaviour because all I find important in human relationships is the person value and not her economic status, I've already noticed people belonging to the lower class being very cultered !
Furthermore, at school, the way pupils dress themselves create discriminations. As far as I am concerned, I would recommend to wear uniforms because they would erase the class a pupil belongs to.
To conclude, I think the society should put an end to social classes because they definitly create discriminations.

  23. I think social classes create a form of discrimination in our society because there is a relationship between the dominant and the dominated, the proletariat against the leaders who never share. This discrimination is the fruit of an individualistic society and obsession with power rather than equality. This situation create problems and tensions between us.
Delete the fondment of social classes to profit a better world is utopic, but reduce the gap between social classes is possible to stop this discrimination.

  24. I think social classes is Something that sadly cannot be avoid in society.Wealthy people are not easily in contact with poor ones so they are afraid of them and sometimes disdain them. In contrary the poor people blame wealthy one for being selfish and not chearing them money wich is sometimes true. This situation and these stereotypes create discrimination. For exemple wealthy children are send in prestigious schools where social mix doesn't exist. Some politicians get away with stories of misappropriation of funds because they have money. Normal people work them whole lifes to pay them retirement and have sometimes many debt where wealthy ones can born this way and alowed themselves to do absolutly nothing. These injustices are in my opinion unacceptable

  25. The first person who spoke about "social classes" was Karl Marx in 1867, in his famous book "Capital: Critique of Political Economy". He created this idea to define the new "types" of people that the industrial revolution had made.
In his text Marx explains the world is divided in several categories of people: the ones who works and win money by working (they form the largest group) and the ones who do not need to work because they already own lots of things and just have to lend working equipment to the ones who work to make more money.
So in Marx's opinion, social classes were created by the happy few ones who own a lot (and who are called the upper class) to make that all the others (who are the working class) stay calm, do not make any revolution, and let the rich ones rule the world.
Since I think that letting a little group of people rule a larger one just because of the privileges that they already had before they were born is a kind of discrimination, I would say that social classes create discrimination because they were meant to create discriminations.
But lots of things have changed since 1867. Now, we have a "middle class" that proves that some of the people from the working class became richer and could have a better situation. Perhaps did Marx not think that it would be possible someday, when he wrote "Capital".
If we would have a chance to change the social class we were born with because of our work, we could not say that there is some discrimination caused by the social class, because everyone could be better treated if he worked more.
But in facts, that does not happen very often. Lots of people believed earlier that their lives could become better for instance because of the American dream, but when we look at the names of the people from the upper class, most of them did not change since the industrial revolution. The same families rule the world since 1867.
It could seem very strange for us because we learned since we were children that the school could change everything and give the same chances to everybody, but that would not be possible as long as the "general knowledge" would have a price. For example, a poor child could be really motivated and work hard at school to have some degrees and improve their condition. This child could read all the books, that their teacher asked to read, he could not read alone others books about the same thematic so easily, because their family would not have that much money to put in a book, that is not even needed for school. A rich child's parents could have spent a few dollars in these other books. And when a poor child only reads a play, a rich child could have seen it performed on stage. So money can even help a lot at school.
In the end, I would like to say that I think that, for me, the social classes create a lot of discriminations, that are meant to stay in the future, but also that those discriminations are ones of the worst ones because some people do not see them as "real discriminations", because they think that you deserve to be in the social class you were born in. You first have to point out a discrimination to make it disappear but lots of people seem to ignore that.

  26. in our society we can find differents classes, this type of classes can,in our society, show the type of personn that we are,we can find people in middle class in upper class or even in lower class. I think that we can fin discrimination because of theses classes, not everybody belong to the same classe and not eveybody belong to the upper class or lower class. And it's because of this difference that we can fin discrimination,i think that workong class and lower class are discriminate by the upper class they can be view by upper class as "poor people" and on the other hand the lower class can have a bad image of upper class, because they can have acces to everything thanks to money or relation in their classes. But I think that in our society, even if we can find this sort of discrimination, the subject of middle classes upper classes is a subject that we avoid to evoke

  27. Sociable classes have existed for generations: in the Middle Age already, kings and Queens, the nobility, the bourgeoisie and finally the people, the peasants were at the bottom of the ladder...
Today social classes are determined by the money through work: there are the "rich", the middle class making up the majority, and finally those without work or very poor ...
I think it's obviously synonymous of discriminations: they don't have the same dating, not the same way of life: for a month of intensive work, a worker earns less than a doctor or a buisnessman after two weeks of work ... people belonging to the third class don't stay with very very rich people, because they live in different neighborhoods and places. Evidence of discrimination: the districts (in cities like Paris, but mainly in South America for example) residential, the city center and the suburbs (or slums in Brazil). As for me it's very sad but unfortnatly they never will be able to attend daily when there are too many differences: the poor are often envious of the rich, and rich very frightened or sectarian!
I think that social classes are still subject to discrimination but always present within society. But Now attitudes have changed and it goes better!

  28. First of all, that is important to realize that certain groups in society are less powerful than others. It was indeed Karl Marx, who first talked about social classes. He consecrated all his life defending proletariat whereas he had opportunities to become a brilliant teacher.
Since the XVIII century, society has obviously advanced. However, we can still point out forms of discrimination between what we call the "Upper Class", "the "Middle class" and the "Lower Class". Differences between those classes clearly fade but unfortunately, some of us still suffer in silence of the social discrimination.

On the one hand, social classes have always existed and create big différences between people's lives. Having money is not a problem on itself but it might become one if, for instance, only rich kids can afford to go to college. We all deserve to have the same chance to succeed in life!

On the other hand, it would be impossible to erase social classes. Our society is evolving and maybe, step by step, we will improve education for everyone. It is evident that in some cases money matters too much, for exemple in the USA healthcare is not automatic.

To sum everything up, discrimination is a difficult issue to solve. Indeed, social classes actually creates discrimination but it is very hard to change society...

  30. I notice that social classes influence people who thus remain in distinct groups, maybe because there are more facilities to create links among individuals who share the same social environment. Also they could feel more secure being together.Anyways I think that actually the existence of social classes may lead to discriminations due to their way of thinking. For example the aristocrats are not in favour of being mixed with other social classes. They isolate themselves from the general population and go to their own rallies, social events and private schools. But on the other hand, this situation can evolve. Some people succeed in climbing the social scales thanks to the education system which is intended not to be discriminatory and provide the future of even the poorest ones in working hard as the other social classes do.

  31. I think social classes create discrimination. Indeed, nowadays people do not really dare to say what they think and prefers to be likened to a group so that they do not feel excluded or criticized or humiliated. However, this depends on the society in which we find ourselves, because every company is different and its own opinions. In France, we apparentons the group phenomenon, indeed, whether for students or adults, they conform to a group ideology and not personal. If we take the example of clothing, nowadays people dress according to what is fashionable and do not dare to assert their personal style, people dress like everyone else, and soon a person will assert his own style or dress differently and although it will be criticized, rejected, humiliated see. However, I think that we should not totally be likened to a group, it must still defend his own opinions, his own choices and not be swayed by others because I find it absurd to let someone dictate that it wants and what to believe over the people, there is nobody who is superior to others on the contrary we are all equal, and we have to respect each other instead of criticizing.

  32. Social classes have always been there. No matter the time or place, every society has functioned according to a hierarchy, be it a democracy, monarchy (big up à Victor) or a dictature. As a matter of fact, there have also always been social dicrimination, due to wealth, birth or racism very often. As soon as someone is leading other people there will be a difference in one another's treatment. For example still today in France someone born in a poor family with few cultural notions will have a significant disadvantage that the educational system won't most of the time be able to cure. Of course a society with no social classes at all is completely ideal, it's an utopia so the best way to stop these inequalities is to ameliorate the systems such as school, social helps and justice to name only a few.

  33. Hello everybody !
First of all , there are several social classes and " social classes are the motor of history " according to the German economist Marx .

Social classes create discrimination because some rich people can buy everything they want and on the other hand , poor people have to keep their money to eat for example . Moreover , the " upper class " has not the same rights , she is more powerful than the " lower class " . I really think that this is unfair but we can't erase this big issue .

To sum up , we have already tried to erase social classes like Karl Marx who was a socialist but nowadays , we see that socialists ideas have not totally erased social classes and discrimination between them .

  34. Hello !

To begin with, Discrimination is the fact of treating someone differently just because this person is different from the rest of the group or the community. In this subject it is about social classe it consist of classify people in different class.

First of all I think that it is evident that social class create discrimination indeed class discrimination is a big issue in our society. For example people from lower classes will not be admitted to a high scale restaurant or will be discriminated against getting a job or improving their living conditions.
Often, money is not the reason for these differences but rather prejudices are the cause for such discriminative behavior.
However, at the same time, we cannot control the hatred of people who dislike each other based on their class.

To conclude social class create discrimination but like Coline said it is very hard to change the mind of many people in the society.

  35. To begin with, social classes create a form of discrimination in our society because unfortunatly we tend to stay with friends who have the same social class as our. Obviously everybody are not like that but by my experiences it's a few difficult to stay with some friends who are more rich than our because it's create some complicate situations in connection with the money. Nevertheless they are very good friends since 5 years. This subject touch the school too because in some countries children can't go to school because they don't have enough money and because of that they wouldn't do a good job. This class discrimination is cause by our education and by the system of the society. I think that now there are to much side in the society and it's create tensions between us.
We can reduce the gap between social classes in order to do a better world without class discrimination.

  36. For beginning, we have to limit discrimination as much as we can otherwise there will be terrible consequences . It is not easy to do and pointing out some of its forms can lead to different opinions. This is very important to decrease the cases of discrimination, many persons are victims of discrimination and I think this is not how the society it is supposed to be. (by the way i’m doing a presentation on the discrimination in work)

On the one hand, social classes have always existed and create big differences between people's lives. Having money is not a problem on itself but it might become one if, for instance, only rich kids can afford to go to college. We all deserve to have the same chance to succeed in life! It proves that the people who have an different origin or who have no money are disadvantaged and victim of discrimination.

On the other hand, it would be impossible to erase social classes. Our society is evolving and maybe, step by step, we will improve education for everyone. It is evident that in some cases money matters too much, for exemple in the USA healthcare is not automatic. Unfortunately we cannot escape the discrimination…

Finally, discrimination is a difficult issue to solve and probably will never be solved because no matter what, it will always have at least a person in the world who will do discrimination. en effect, social classes actually creates discrimination but it is very hard to change society...
